MIT Beaver Academic Tournament V (Cambridge, MA), 3/14/09

Post by The Logic of Scientific Disco »

The MIT Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce MITBAT V, to be held March 14, 2009 at MIT's Cambridge campus. As in past years, we will use our popular real-time Swiss pairing system through 6 guaranteed rounds of preliminary play, before playing a playoff format to be determined based on the number of teams (in past years, we have used single elimination, but popular opinion is shifting away from that). This tournament will use NAQT IS-81.

The date is currently March 14, but we are aware that it's also an SAT date--thus, if you would be more likely to come or bring more teams on February 28 (2 weeks earlier), please let me know (and, equivalently, if you're registering and 2/28 is a dealbreaker, let me know as well). The ideal date (March 7) is, unfortunately, not available.

The fee structure is as follows:
+$80 first team from a school ($60 for a school playing their first pyramidal tournament)
+$55 each subsequent team
-$10 early registration (by January 25) [per school, not per team]
-$10 per working buzzer system
+$10 to purchase the questions

We will be mailing out invitations in a week or two and posting a registration form online, but you can feel free to claim a spot (or spots) early by emailing me at chriskennedy AT mit DOT edu. We are currently very tentatively capping the field at 32 teams.

See you in March!

E. O. Smith is very interested in coming, though we would like to know if anyone else is interested in 2/28. Just as a plug, this is a fun tourney, very well organized, you will like it, guaranteed, Q. E. D.

Thanks

Yes, MITBAT is still happening; sorry for the lack of responsiveness. The field above has been updated.

Can you accommodate a team from Burlington HS? If so, please let me know ASAP.

OK, here's our almost-final field:

E. O. Smith (3)
Dexter-Southfield (3)
Dolgeville Central (1)
Manlius Pebble (2)
Half Hollow Hills (1)
Concord-Carlisle (2)
Smithtown East (2)
Smithtown West (3)
Kellenberg (3)
Northampton (2)
Burlington (1)
Mystery team that Dennis may confirm (1)

Depending on the status of that last mystery team, we are probably at 24 teams, which means registration is tentatively closed, since 24 is a nice (well, relatively nice) number for Swiss pairs. If you still want to bring a(nother) team, though, let me know, and we'll keep you in mind if someone drops.

We have an outside possibility of a 4th team. Should we bring them?

Change that to definitely we can bring a 4th team if necessary/possible.

Hello--as it turns out, E. O. Smith's situation would probably work out better if we sent just 2 teams. This lets our esteemed colleagues at Kellenberg field that 4th team, if they so desire. Sorry for the change, but it seems to be all for the good. Thanks.

Congratulations to Kellenberg for winning this year's edition of MITBAT, with a 255-245 victory in the first game of an advantaged final to take home the title. Half Hollow Hills West, who was 9-2 to Kellenberg's 10-1 after 6 preliminary rounds and a 6-team championship round-robin, placed second, and Kellenberg B was third at 8-3. The top scorer was Kevin from Kellenberg B, with 60.0 ppg through the prelims.

Stats can be found here (you'll have to click through some links). Thanks to everyone for coming out, and for Kevin Commo and Brother Nigel for moderating through the prelim rounds for us.

It has come to my attention that we made an extremely unfortunate error in entering the scores after round 6, where Burlington defeated Dolgeville 260-10 but was reported as winning only 100-10, thus severely decreasing their bonus conversion in the SQBS file (from 14.18 to 11.27) and keeping them out of the championship bracket, where they would have been seeded 5th had we entered the score correctly. This is clearly a terrible mistake on our part, and I'd like to apologize to Burlington for unfairly nixing their chances in the top bracket. We regret the error, and are looking into ways to prevent something like this from happening in the future.
