Forthe 22nd Annual BISB on Saturday...

The first 5 matches are 3-part affairs.

Part One: 5 tossups and 5, 2-part bonuses related by broad subject category.

Part Two: 4 "Give-and-Takes" with 4 questions each on a single topic.

Part Three: 8 tossups and 8, 3-Part bonuses unrelated to the T.

Rounds 6-12 have more tossups and bonuses in each one while retaining the 3-part structure.

Out of curiosity, are there 57 moderators in Georgia sitting around waiting for an e-mail, or do you have coaches read? Just wondering, as someone who can't fathom a tournament this large.

It's kind of like an epic quizbowl festival, with Brookwood players, alumni, friends, family, etc. all helping out and I think a good number of current students serving as scorekeepers and timekeepers. It was a great tournament to moderate at thanks to the provided extra help and was excellently organized every year. There's also a ton of free and delicious food provided for the helpers throughout the day (note: other tournaments should learn from this). If I didn't have to read back in San Diego, I'd seriously consider flying back to Georgia just to see the spectacle, the likes of which I've only seen rivaled by the HSNCT itself.

Yes taking care of your moderators with food and drink through the day is a must... at least in my book also

While 114 teams is incredibly large - likely being the largest high school-run quizbowl tournament in the country - there were a couple iterations of the BISB in the late 90s that hit nearly 200 teams (180s I think). I believe those were the largest high school quizbowl tournaments ever before last year's HSNCT. Now those were truly spectacles! The amount of effort, organization, and planning that goes into something like that is mind-boggling. So, in comparison, 114 teams is a walk in the park for Mr. Barry and company.

168 teams was our biggest tournament and it was in 2000. I can assure Mr Rountree that 114 teams is no "walk in the park." :-)

Based on my idea that there should be no byes, and limited space available even at a large school like mine, I am pretty sure we could only have as many as 120 teams without playing matches in trailers! If we use trailers, we could have as many as 138 Ithink. I turned away 6 schools this week which I do not like to do, but I had schemed for 114 and that was already prepared for by Tuesday.

I just want all our workers (60 readers, 150 BHS students, 25 Academic Team members, and about 25 others) to all show up on time and ready to go. AND all 114 teams checked-in by 8:15am!

Our readers include: current parents of team members, parents of former team members, community people with no real tie to our school, BHS alums, retired coaching pals of mine in GA, assorted quiz bowl people like Chris and others from UGA, NIck/Todd from Clemson, a few folks from GT and sometime Emory. I know about 110 people I would trust to read at the BISB ande most read here on and off depending on their schedule. I hope some of the seniors who will play at Brookwood tomorrow will be readers at the BISB in November of 2010.
