So, word on the street is that with my application, which came in 2 hours before the deadline, we have a tryout of a whopping 22!!! people. This should be very interesting and I'm glad to see everybody is coming out to this.

22? Wow, that's pretty impressive. I hope my application made it in on time... Is a list of people trying out going to be posted?

Since nomination by a coach isn't required, I didn't think there was a problem.

I mean, you do still attend that school don't you? If you somehow don't go to Viator at all anymore then how are you going to play NASAT?

Yes I still do attend that school. But if you knew that administration like I do, you'd also wanna cover your ass. Best to put as much distance between them and my quizbowl-related activities as possible.

So, since this is coming up in less than a week now, does anyone know a good way to get from Chicago to UIUC? And/or would someone happen to be taking a bus from somewhere close to Chicago if there are multiple students from a school going? I can compensate for travel costs if I could somehow come with you if that is the case. Anything that doesn't make my parents drive 2-3 hours would be much appreciated.

In decreasing order of pleasantness, here are the public transportation options: Megabus, Suburban Express, (major dropoff), Amtrak, biking, hitchhiking, walking, LEX, Greyhound. Shoot me an IM/Facebook message/email/whatever if you want more help with public transportation.

For anyone in need of a ride, my dad is bringing Malis, Nolan, Marcel, and Ben Carbery. And possibly Deveau. So if you need a ride, we can take you as long as you can get a ride to my house. (Email/message me for my info.) I think that's all the car can fit though, unless I drive (I don't really want to), so you'd have to be the last person.

Long story short: there is one spot left in the Donohue shuttle to NASAT. Who wants it??

If the people from the selection committee don't wanna reveal it, we could just out ourselves. And, obviously, we're not really concerned about the vast majority the people who don't post here. I'm in social studies. And since he doesn't post, I'll say Ben Carbery is too.

Speaking of people omitted from lists, I don't seem to be listed in any of the subject rounds in the latest email. Indeed, there seems to have been somewhat of a reduction in people in the Social Studies room.

For the subject round, how many questions will it be? Will there be tossups and bonuses or just tossups, and how many rounds worth of questions will be asked during that round?

I will be sending additional details later this week, but remember we will be relatively short on time. The plan now is to have 20 tossups in the 1st, 2nd, and subject rounds, and tossups and bonuses in the group rounds.

My guess is Deveau, Lloyd, Ben Chametzky, and Dan-Don. Unless the plan is to take one person from each room, then it would probably be Deveau, Lloyd, Ben Chametzky, and Greg D.

EDIT: The Social Studies room is really stacked.

Deveau + Lloyd is a lock for sure. They scored over 220 PPG combined in both Auburn-Deveaus matches last Saturday - that combo is pretty sick.

From there I guess it comes down to who is impressive in the SS room. I haven't seen a bunch of them play but Zahed, Chametz and Dan all seem like possibles. There's too many names that I don't recognize from that room to make any real predictions

Zahed pointed out to me last night that Abid is a growing RMP, social science, and music powerhouse, in addition to his visarts prowess. So Abid has a lot of nice niches that he could fill for Team Illinois.

Abid is terrible at RM... I would say "God-awful", but that reference might be lost on him. I'm not sure he's a music powerhouse yet, either.

I'm sure Riley will send a more detailed email about it, but:

The entire event will be taking place in David Kinley Hall.

For parking, the usual recommended lot (E-3, next to the Main library) is free on weekends. Park there, go around to the south side of the library, cross the street.

If you have a laptop, and want internet access while on campus, let me know, and I will try to get you a guest account.
