Put us down for 2 teams, three buzzers for now, possibly 3 teams, possibly moderator or 2, will know more later.

UCSD is expressing interest; potentially one team may attend.

I just realized that this is the same day as our high school tournament. Is there any chance of this being on Sunday instead?

you have us listed twice, once for 1 team tentative and the other for 2 teams, 3 buzzers. We should have 2 teams, but only 2 buzzers.

I'm assuming the problem is that I still have a tentative team for UCLA. If not, what is incorrect?

Field update:
UCLA - 2 teams (2 buzzers)
UCSD - 2 teams (at least 1 buzzer)
Case Western - 1 team
Caltech - 1 team (2 buzzers)
Claremont - 1 team
Claremont (tentative) - 1 team
Caltech (tentative) - 1 team

Also, tournament registration will start at 8:30 am. We plan on starting the tournament by 9.

Its just confusing to see teams listed so many times - I guess I'm expecting something like
UCSD - 1 confirmed, 1 tentative
I think I get it now :)

Due to obtaining of car problems and public transit maybe not working for us to get there by 9:00, we may only have 1 team. We have 1 driver as of now, so If there is an odd number of teams, can you schedule one UCLA bye for the first round and then the rest of UCLA will show up at 10:00ish (assuming public transit is on schedule), as the earliest we can get there is a 9:51 into Claremont's train station. We'll have 5 people there at the 8:30 registration, so if need be one of them can play it solo until the rest of our team gets there. I'm still working on getting a second driver though, I'll let you know how that goes.

We could do that. I recommend looking at bus options (mainly ones that use the Silver Streak), although the trip will take a while. For example, the following route should get you from UCLA's Hilgard station to Pomona:
Metro Trip Planner wrote: Ride Metro Local Line 20( DOWNTOWN LA - 7TH-MAPLE) heading east
From: WILSHIRE BLVD/WARNER AV(SE corner) Lv: 06:09AM
To: 7TH ST/OLIVE ST(SW corner) Ar: 06:55AM

Ride Foothill Transit Silver Streak( EASTBOUND) heading north
From: OLIVE ST/7TH ST(NE corner) Lv: 07:02AM
To: POMONA TRANS CTR Ar: 08:11AM

Ride Foothill Transit 480 (MONTCLAIR TRANSIT CTR) heading south
From: POMONA TRANS CTR Lv: 08:16AM
To: 1ST ST/CLAREMONT TRANS CTR Ar: 08:37AM

I didn't see that one when looking with google maps. We can do that instead.

A few questions from us out-of-staters:

1) Does Mason Hall have an address I can use to punch into my GPS? I found it on the campus map but I couldn't find an address.
2) What are your suggestions for free/cheap parking near Mason Hall?
3) How bad are the LA-area interstates on Sunday mornings? We're staying near LAX, and Google Maps is telling me the drive to Pomona College is 58 minutes (or 110 minutes in traffic). I'm just wondering where in between we should leave taking into account Sunday morning traffic.

Thanks for any help!

1) Google Street View suggests 586 N. Harvard Ave. as the address to go for.
2) Mason has a parking lot nearby that is free. If that lot is full there are other lots nearby (and some places that allow for parking on the street) that are free.
3) It should be about an hour to and hour and fifteen minutes ride on a Sunday morning.

Just as a quick update, Irvine is excitingly inept at getting its act together. I'm about 90% sure that there will be a two-person team consisting of me and Jeremy.

This was a very well-run tournament. For a team hosting their first college tournament since 2001(?), I was pleasantly impressed by the clarity of all of the moderators, especially given the expected number of grammatical problems in the packets. Good job from everyone involved.

EDIT: Those playoff stats are not a misprint. UCSD did actually take us down to the last tossup with Auroni scoring in the negatives. While novice tournaments aren't the best predictor of anything at higher levels, that is one really scary team. Outside of that, there are some freshmen who already demonstrate pretty deep knowledge in parts of the novice canon; it'll be exciting to see them only get better.

Thank you so much for hosting! I want to echo everything Dwight was saying about the great moderating staff and organization.

Will this tournament be taken into account for ACF Novice eligibility? i.e. Tammy scored 40+ppg this time in her first college tournament. Is she now ineligible for ACF Novice?

I would imagine that anyone within reason who asks for an exception at the UCSD Novice site will get one.

On that note, depending on how many teams we have, we might ask some of our UCSD players to staff and not play even though they are freshman this year. If you have four eager freshmen, you might do similarly, and maybe she can sit this one out. Though if you have 2, then ask Andrew by all means.

Not that it matters at this point, but her 2 HSNCT playoff appearances made her already ineligible-except-with-exemption even before EFT.
