Brief Announcement: Slapdash Carleton Mirror of TERP (10/30)

Post by Cheynem »

Okay, so this is going to be a strange announcement, as I do not go to Carleton.

Minnesota and Carleton want to hold a mirror of the University of Maryland's house written trash set (TERP) on Saturday, October 30, at Carleton College at "Northfield." There are no problems getting facilities, but due to short notice, we anticipate staff to be a real problem. Right now, we project two Minnesota and two Carleton teams which requires two staffers (which we can do). Other teams are certainly welcome to play, but we would prefer that they register in increments of two and provide a staffer.

The cost is tentatively $10 per person (Maryland has to feed Chris Ray after all). I'm sure Carsten Gehring will wander along and tell us about rooms, times, parking, or maybe he won't, and I'll have to copy and paste something from another thread.

Bad announcement? Yes! But the basic gist is true unless Carsten was feeding me lies last night.

"Providing a staffer" can also be fulfilled by bringing people willing to rotate between playing and staffing; a designated non-playing person is not strictly necessary.

This tournament is going to be hosted on the second floor Laird Hall on the Carleton College campus in Northfield, MN (as Mike indicated, not at the U of M, even though he posted the announcement). Laird Hall can be located using this campus map. There isn't really parking anywhere right next to Laird, but there will probably be space to park in the Chapel or Concert Hall parking lots if people are parking back by the Cannon again now that the flood waters have receded. Otherwise, parking on the street off Carleton's campus is fine. As for the time of the tournament, that will probably depend on how early people want to arrive for playing. I have the rooms reserved from 8 in the morning until 8 at night, and no one's going to try and kick us out if we stay a little bit longer than that for some odd reason. I'll give a better update on what time to arrive by once I've heard more input from attending teams.

My usual collection of geriatrics may or may not be interested in playing this. I'll have to survey the group.

If we do play:
* There will be two or three of us playing as a team
* We can't provide a staffer (although if we are the 5th team there would be byes...)
* Earlier is better in terms of schedule as due to my unfortunate affliction I would need to leave by about 3:30pm

Byes would be rather unpleasant, but I suppose worst case scenario, the team on a bye would scrimmage on the packet. I would be willing to play shorthanded as well to fill out a schedule.

I'm going to commit with 75% certainty to playing this, as opposed to frisbee (in costumes! in Winona!). Mike, does your Facebook based offer still stand?

Yeah, why not. Do you have any other potential teammates?

EDIT: Depending how many teams are there, we may just do a draft as well, a la, THUNDER.

I'll throw myself into the mix as either a team (1 or 2 person) or part of a draft, whatever works best.

Barring a sudden infusion of committed staffers, it looks like this tournament might require 1-2 rotating staffers.

Looks like none of my team are available, so we're out.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing for you...

Sorry you couldn't make it--I always enjoy playing you guys! It probably isn't really a good or bad thing per se--I imagine we'll still need about the same amount of staffers.

This will be a draft, I think. We'll see how many people we have. Ideally, I'd love to keep it to four teams to minimize the need for staffers (I think we can allow some slightly larger teams). If we need five teams, I suppose the team on the "bye" can send one player to staff and the others just scrimmage amongst themselves (?).

"Registration" will happen from 9-9:30, which can hopefully include doing the draft, too. Games will start at 9:30 or whenever the drafting is done. Other important info can hopefully be found in my first post in this thread or Mike's first post. Field update is a lot of Carleton people, a lot of Minnesota people, and hopefully Arlo Lyle, if he's still planning on coming. Captains for the draft would probably be Mike C., Rob C., C. Rosenthal, and Arlo Lyle, depending on who shows up and stuff.

First round robin
Second round robin
All-star game

Thanks to everyone for coming out today to play TERP. Also, thanks to Nate Kane for the rest of the game show set questions. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves in scenic Northfield.

And don't forget about ACF Fall next week at Carleton.
