ACF Regionals 2011 @ Arizona State Univ-Tempe (Feb 26, 2011)

Post by Sun Devil Student »

On behalf of the ASU Quizbowl Team, I am excited to announce the first-ever ACF Regionals in the State of Arizona! Many thanks to Rob Carson and his ACF editing team for bringing us this wonderful opportunity for some desert quizbowl.

Please see this post for detailed information about packet submission requirements and eligibility. You only need to write a packet if someone on your team played tournaments prior to 9/1/2009; otherwise, writing a packet is optional.

This mirror of ACF Regionals primarily serves the Sonoran-Mojave-Rocky Mountains region but also presents an alternative travel option for Southern California teams which may find (depending on their circumstances) that it is slightly more convenient or quicker to travel to Tempe than to Palo Alto. Any such teams will be much appreciated for helping to support our new ACF circuit with their time, money, and skill. We will highly welcome all teams who wish to attend, regardless of origin.

------------------Full logistical announcement below--------------------

Date: February 26, 2011

Location: Arizona State University, Tempe campus, Physical Sciences, A-wing

Schedule (tentative):
8:00 - 8:30am - Registration (in PSA 118)
8:30 - 9:00am - Rules meeting to go over the rules and tournament format and answer questions.
9:00am - Morning rounds
approx. noon - Lunch break
1:00pm - Afternoon rounds

Parking:
The most reliably open place to park is the Rural Rd. Parking Structure on the east edge of campus. More distant parking options are the Open-air parking lots along Mill Avenue (northwest corner area of campus) or visitor parking in the Apache Blvd. Parking Structure (south end of campus). Parking may also be found at the southwest corner of campus around Gammage Auditorium. The Tyler St. parking structure to the north of the Rural Rd. structure near the light rail station is closer but may or may not be open. The Stadium Parking Structure to the north of campus is also closer but may not be free depending on ASU's athletic schedule.
A parking map can be found here: http://asu.edu/parking/pdf/map_tempe.pdf

Hotels:
A few hotels are located within walking distance of the ASU Tempe campus. In particular, the Twin Palms Hotel is directly across the street from campus, though on the opposite side of campus from the tournament site (Physical Sciences A-wing). A quick search using a travel website is probably your best option.

Lunch options:
1) north central area of campus directly across University Drive to the north - Devil's Diner, Manzy Square residential dining hall buffet
2) north and west of the tournament site (cross University Drive, go west to College Ave, then look north of Fulton Center) - Panda Express, Smashburger, Port of Subs, Subway
3) south and west of the tournament site in the ASU Memorial Union - Papa John's, Pitchforks residential dining hall buffet, Einstein Bros, Taco Bell, Burger King (last two may be closed on Saturday though; the other aforementioned places are open)
4) north and east of the tournament site, on northeast corner of University Drive and Rural Rd.
5) southeast corner of campus - Subway, Hassayampa residential dining hall buffet, Barrett Honors College residential dining hall buffet (the infamous "Hogwarts cafeteria")
6) further south from Barrett Honors College complex, across Apache Blvd., there is a Jimmy Johns sub shop ((480) 839-5200) and a Domino's Pizza ((480) 968-5555). Delivery can be ordered from both of these locations.

Teams may also choose to bring their own lunches.

Registration fee: See the ACF website for a full table of discounts
Base fee: $120
-$75 for completely new teams
-$25 if this is your team's first ACF tournament
(Note that because Region 13 almost universally qualifies for the "new to quizbowl" and "new to ACF" discounts, it is highly unlikely that any team in our region will pay more than $25 in registration.)
-$5 per working buzzer system
-$10 per competent moderator
-$10 per 200 miles distance from your place to ours (by Google Maps)
-any discounts (or +penalties) for early/late packet submission as detailed in this post

Please make all checks payable to "Sun Devil Quizbowl Club".

To register: E-mail [email protected] with the following information:
1) School name
2) Coach/responsible individual's name and contact information
3) Number of teams you are entering
4) Number of buzzer systems you can bring
If your team has any working buzzer systems, please bring them; ASU Quizbowl has only one buzzer system.

Feel free to e-mail [email protected] with any questions.

Bump to let all California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico teams know that the University of Arizona absolutely does possess a quizbowl team now. I think it is likely we can persuade them to come here.

Anyone else interested now that it's not just the ASU house team? Let me know!

An enjoyable time will be had by all at this tournament! I have large amounts of couch/floor space, as I'm sure some of our other members do as well, should that be an added incentive (like 80 degrees and sunshine isn't enough?) to anyone on the fence about making the trek. Same also goes for the MUT/SoA mirror being considered, so hopefully we'll see some of you out here before the end of the year.

Now, what we need is for Mike to get us to the astronomy lab on top of Physical Sciences for a few packets on the roof...

Field update:
Arizona State Sun Devils - 1-2 house teams + 1 buzzer; 3rd house team possible if field is small and interest high
Claremont Stags/Athenas - 1-2 teams? (6 players) [DROPPED]

Possibly interested teams:
Local high schools - possible involvement by Desert Vista and/or BASIS Scottsdale free agents (not Brophy, unfortunately)
Arizona Wildcats - who knows? [they're more likely to show up to MUT but may or may not appear at this tournament, too]

Overnight Accomodations:
~12 spots available: 4 couches and 6-10 floor spaces, provided by Ian McCloskey, Brendan Guinn, and myself.
Register for MUT to reserve spaces for your team.

EDIT: House teams only this time. Hope to see you at our next tournament, MUT on 3/19 (three weeks away!).

Bump for more visibility, since we still have only Claremont and ASU signed up. Where's the rest of SoCal, we'd love to return all your hospitality from the past few years!

Brophy says they may be entering an actual team. We'll know on Wednesday.

Field update:
Claremont was unable to obtain a vehicle in time and had to drop. Brophy has also dropped due to scheduling conflicts.

ASU reluctantly keeps the first-ever Region 13 ACF title for itself. It appears that the true contest for this region will have to wait until MUT coming up three weeks from now.

Free agents and/or additional teams for this ACF Regionals mirror will continue to be admitted up until 8:30am on Saturday morning; just show up to PSA 118 on the ASU Tempe campus. Otherwise, the field stands at two teams, and tournament format looks like a quintuple round-robin. (Any free agents will be joined to ASU B, thus rendering half the field instantly ineligible to "win" the tournament.)

All teams in our area: Please do sign up for MUT on March 19!

Quick results: ASU A limps away with the first-ever official ACF title in Region 13 , going 4-3 in a heptuple round robin with ASU B. Full stats are at http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings.

Both teams hope to face a stronger challenge at next month's MUT which we will be hosting on March 19. So please come on over! :)
