GUERRILLA III - Friday, 4/8/11 - ICT Hotel, Chicago

Posted: Tue Feb 15, 2011 2:08 pm
by Mike Bentley
This is a formal announcement for GUERRILLA III, a guerrilla tournament held at the ICT. This year the tournament will take place on Friday, 4/8/11, and will be a guerrilla tournament (e.g. no central editor).

ELIGIBILITY:
Everyone is eligible to play in this tournament, so long as they are on a team that contributes a packet. If you don't write a packet or get on a team that contributes to a packet, you're not playing. There will definitely not be a bracket for teams that did not write this year.

TEAMS:
You'll need to form teams before the tournament because you have to write a packet (see below). In other words, there will not be a draft.

PRICE:
The tournament is free to play.

PACKET GUIDELINES:
Teams will have to write a packet of at least 20 tossups. If you have some great packet idea and want to go crazy and write a 40 question packet, go for it. Just make sure that you have at least 20 tossups.

Themes are encouraged but not required. However, try to write themes that are general and don't lend themselves to figuring questions out (e.g. don't write a Washington State theme packet and have the first tossup be Seattle).

In terms of difficulty, shoot for ACF Nationals level difficulty. The field should be pretty strong, but don't use this as an excuse to write all of your tossups on that would be graded a "6" on the Magin difficulty scale.

Details on where to submit your packets will be forthcoming.

REQUESTS:
It would be great if someone wants to volunteer to collect the packets and eliminate the repeats. If someone wants to step up and offer basic editing service that would be even better, but that's not really expected or required. If you're interested, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected].

DATE AND LOCATION:
Friday, 4/8/11. 9:30 PM. ICT Hotel Lobby (please try to meet there at 9:15 PM).

And, to end this triple post, I'm looking for teammates.

A couple of questions:

-This will be starting 9:30 PM, Friday night, yes? Is there a definitive time commitment associated with it, i.e., would playing this mean playing until 1, 2, 3 AM, such that we might be limited to 7, 6, 5 hours of sleep?
-Do these packets have bonuses? Or is that left to our discretion?

Barring a massive infringement on my sleep schedule, I would be very interested in competing and I imagine we could put together at least one ASU team from the two teams coming to Nationals.

Last year it didn't take very long. There were no bonuses.

Depending on time and transport, I'd like to play this. I'd like to play with fun cats whom I haven't played with before.

I'm interested in playing this and suppose I'm looking for teammates. I'll also request a somewhat earlier start time than 9:30, if possible.

The reason for the late start time is to accomodate people arriving late. If there ends up being a large number of teams, I'll consider pushing the start time ahead. In the last two years we've had 5 packets each (tossups only), so the tournament finished in like an hour and a half. I don't think end time is going to be a huge concern unless we get more than like 7 teams.

I'm definitely interested in gunning for a threepeat (especially if it means I end up writing my portion of the packet in the car on the way down again) and am looking for awesome people to play with. Willingness to write a wacky theme packet is preferred.

EDIT: I will be playing with the inestimable Matt "Rizzoli" Bollinger. We are, of course, still looking for fellow adventurous types.

I can't recall playing on a team with you before--want to team up?

Well, its kind of up in the air whether I can go to ICT at all this year, but assuming I'm there and on time, I'll play.

Unless my schedule next quarter doesn't permit this, I'll throw my hat into the ring and write 6/6 for some poor saps.

I'll sign up for this event, on the following conditions:

1. I don't get drafted to do ICT logistics stuff after 9:30 (well, I hope not)

2. Prospective teammates are willing to put up with history tossups hastily written Thursday night while ICT is printing

I will play this, assuming that I am in Chicago at the time and that my ICT teammates do not have other things planned.

I am looking for teammates who are as much interested in the creation of wacky theme packets as they are in playing this tournament. I assure you I have already concocted a sufficiently wacky theme (I have a reputation to uphold, you know).

Unfortunately it looks like my D1 team's chances of qualifying are very slim this year... otherwise I'd offer you an additional Mike (with his permission, of course), whom I'm pretty sure you haven't been on a team with before :)

I may boycott this tournament this year, as last year's iteration was quite possibly the worst tournament I've ever played.

I think I can say with certainty that all four of the Oxford team will be interested. This was a great way to get to meet some bona fide Americans last year and those of us who took part thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

In the interest of being sociable and getting to know people, I think it might be more fun if we split ourselves up with different teams rather than enter as a unit, so if anyone is assembling a team and wants to recruit, school playground-style:

Me (Chemistry / F1 Racing specialist)
George (History specialist, confused by all things American, esp. baseball)
Aaron (all things Canadian and Social / Env Science specialist)
Alex (Eng Lit specialist, former winner of the UK's "University Challenge")

then speak up. We'd all be happy to write some questions to contribute, obviously.

I don't yet know how I'll spend my last night as a reigning ICT Champion, but I know it won't be in Chicago, so I won't play this. However, I do enjoy writing wacky questions and would be happy to help some team - or even multiple teams! - write packets for this.

I'd have to see if I can make it to ICT, but i could possibly be the fourth. Don't write me in as a definite teammate yet.

Might there be examples of packets from previous years, so as to give an idea as to what a themed packet should be like and to approximate the ideal balance of academic and silly in a packet?

Last year's packets are at http://doc-ent.com/quizbowl/GUERRILLA%20II.rar. I would encourage you to write more along the lines of Kandlikar packet (NAQT parody) and less along the lines of the Watkins packet (British theme, with several of the answers easy to figure out, and also 6 questions missing).

I'll contribute questions, and might play if we arrive early enough (or at all). I'm not very good, so it's not going to be a huge difference to your team if I miss it. :)

Sorry, Zach--I'm afraid that since I posted our original three-man line-up, Billy Beyer has affixed himself to us, like a barnacle to the hull of a a slowly listing industrial barge. I hope you find another good option, but if not, and this thing is like past years, you're welcome to be part of a five-person agglomeration with us if that ends up being acceptable. Good luck!

I wouldn't mind playing this and will offer myself up for anyone who wants me. I'm not a strong player compared to the majority of the ICT lineup, but I'm pretty decent at psychology and poetry. I am also alright at literature overall and can do some fine arts, social sciences and RMP. I can write toss ups on any of those things.
Let me know if anyone needs a player.

Edit: I forgot to say that I also have three tossups written for this

How big can teams be for this?

I'm now staffing for ICT, so I would like to play, possibly alongside my D2 team if they decide to play (making a 5-person team), or as a free agent. If I become a free agent, I can contribute 6 super-creative and accessible tossups which have rarely/never been answer lines before (to my knowledge).

Two of my D1 players are also considering coming to staff (I don't know if they are; I told them to contact Joel Gluskin.) One of them (if he does attend as a staffer) might be willing to join the team of Mikes if they're still looking for a fourth Mike.

4 players only for teams.

By the way, if you've formed a team and are definitely writing a packet for this tournament (the only way you can actually play in this tournament), please post in the thread with the members of that team so I can get a sense of what the final field size will be. Since we most likely need to have an odd number of teams, I'll be closing registration for this tournament this Sunday unless we have an even number of teams.

Here is the current field update (as of 4/4):
Mike Bentley, Mike Cheyne, Michael Hausinger, Guy Tabachnick
Chris Borglum, Ahmad Ragab, Dalin Kelson, Billy Beyer
Oxford
Rob Carson, Matt Bollinger, Will Butler, Chris Ray
Matt Hayes, Jake Sundberg, Nate Kane, Jeff Hoppes

Since it doesn't like Oxford are going to be able to partition ourselves into different teams, we'll probably enter as a four and write a packet. I'll confirm in the next couple of days.

The deadline makes things interesting. I have to speak with Jake to see what our plans are. So far, the team is just me and him and I still have to write 16 more tossups.

So for now, I am tentatively committing to play in this event. The team is myself and Jake Sundberg, though we are certainly looking to add teammates if anyone would like to join.
