MO Side Event: Oh You Didn't Know...This Was Vanity?

Post by Cheynem »

So I plan on writing a few packets for a MO side event since I'm going to be stuck in Minneapolis all Sunday anyway. Quality not assured. Price will be low, like $2 a person.

Expect like 6 packets of 20/20, maybe more. This is incredibly, incredibly vanity--a lot of this is is just a way to use up some unspeakably vanity questions I've been sitting on for a while.

Distribution:

3/3 Movies
3/3 Television
5/5 History (mostly American)
2/2 Literature (mostly short stories and plays)
2/2 Sports (mostly baseball)
1/1 Wrestling (this is basically impossible if you don't watch wrestling, fair warning--for example, if you don't understand the tournament subtitle, you'll probably not do well at these questions)
1/1 NES/SNES/Sega Genesis Video Games (can include Game Gear and Game Boy and perhaps Virtual Boy)
2/2 Misc. (including advertising, meta, cultural studies, and communication theory)

Enjoy.

I'll probably only be able to play this until around noon on Sunday, but I'm looking for teammates.

I will definitely play this.

I would need to clear out by about 3 on a Sunday, so the earlier the better.

The distribution got slightly tweaked--I didn't feel like writing comics or music questions, so those are gone (but some could still show up in the "miscellaneous" distribution).

Apparently they are having trouble getting Sunday rooms, so it might help if a running field was started so we know much interest/rooms were needed. Please post here (or I guess e-mail me) if you want to play this.

You don't need to have a whole team or anything.

This will be just six packets of tossup/bonuses with perhaps some additional tossups for the hell of it.

2. Mike Bentley/Brian Weikle

It looks like due to Coffman not being open until noon on Sunday, that we will not be starting until then. I plan on organizing it so that we can start immediately at noon (and with six packets, I don't see it going that long)--we can even meet the night before or in a nearby place on campus to set up team formation/schedules. I'm not sure how many people this negatively impacts in terms of being able to play, but I guess we played Lederberg for MO under similar time constraints and it worked out okay.

EDIT: All questions are written now, by the way.

With the cancellation of Amazing Planet, can this be played on Saturday night now?

EDIT: According to Andrew Hart, yes. So this will take place whenever Minnesota Open is finished.

Can you answer these two hopefully-related questions:

1) What time is MO proper beginning, and how many rounds will be played?
2) About what time can we expect this event to begin?

MO will start at 8:30. Assuming 35-40 minutes per round (and ten rounds), and a slightly elongated lunch period to accommodate Eyes That Do Not See, I anticipate finals (if necessary) to begin around 5pm. Tack on another 15 minutes for stats and awards and an extra 35 minutes or so for each finals match necessary. We'll take an hour-long dinner break after finals. I imagine that Mike's event will start no later than 7:30pm, all told. It could start up to an hour earlier if finals aren't required.

I assume Seth will mercilessly destroy us all as his wont, so no need for finals.

Also, if you're going to be at the main event, you can form teams (sort of) ad hoc there. If you're NOT going to be at the main event, try and get a team before you come, so we don't waste time with the poodle and the dee.

There's six packets--six teams might be the best, we would do a round robin, and then pair match for the finals. I assume (?) the change in time would allow for more people to play or be dragooned into playing.

Neither me nor apparently anyone else noticed that the distribution only adds up to 19/19, so I hastily wrote 6/6 more that are also Miscellaneous with a greater emphasis on meta in the bonuses.

There are no tiebreakers of any sorts; ideally all matches end in a tie in a Feit Thompson paradox.

That should come up more.

EDIT: I'd also be interested in playing this, conditional on not inconveniencing anyone sharing the car I'd be in.

The team of Matt Lafer, Rob Carson, Aaron Rosenberg, and Bernadette Spencer cleared the field to win this. By nature of "head to head play" and by winning the extra match, the team of Ike Jose, Andrew Hart, Brendan Byrne, and Ryan Westbrook finished second (although stats suggest otherwise--Cabrera MVP supporters go with Ike's team, while Trout MVP supporters go with Mike Bentley's team).

Afterwards, Connor Teevens read his 80 tossups. Rob Carson handily won, although I somehow took second despite the vast amounts of music/video games (I think, either Ike or Aaron Rosenberg or Billy Busse can expose me as a liar if I didn't them pass in the last few tossups).

Agreed. As usual, Mike, this was a very fun and interesting event. Thanks for putting it on. Also, thanks to everyone for being patient with the room locking situation, and sorry if I seemed a little exasperated because of it (I was, but it wasn't directed at any of you).

I figured the wrestling would be pretty niche, but I also figured I should probably get it out of my system at a tournament like this instead of more general interest sets.

I sent the set to Mike Bentley for Wastebin, I can also post it I guess on the general DB.

Out of the 3 of us, Aaron had the most points with 75 (5/0/0). I don't remember how many you ended up with.
