ACF Regionals 2013 Global Announcement

Post by DumbJaques »

This is the official global announcement for ACF Regionals 2013, which will take place on February 23, 2013.

Editors:
Head Editor: Chris Ray (Maryland)
Co-Editors: John Lawrence (King's College London), Cody Voight (VCU), Rob Carson (Ball So Hard University)

Hosts:
Note that we are now actively seeking hosts in most regions - please contact us at [email protected] if you're interested. Bids will remain open for two weeks before we begin running down sites ourselves, so please indicate your interest ASAP if you'd like first crack at it.

West: UCSD
Pacific Northwest: University of Washington
South: Rice
Southeast: University of South Carolina
Great Lakes: Chicago
Midwest: WUStL
East Canada/Niagara: University of Toronto
Mid-Atlantic: University of Maryland
Northeast: Brown

We may add or condense certain sites depending on how bids shake out to make sure we're making the best choices possible for the most teams. In particular, interested parties in that whole Midwest Regionals thing should contact me and explain to me what consensus (if any) was reached on the issue.

Packet Submission:
Every team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2011 is required to submit a packet in order to play in Regionals. Please note that, like last year, this requirement also applies to eligible high school teams. Further information can be found at the ACF Packet Submission Guidelines.

The submission schedule for this tournament is:
December 30, 2012: -$50
January 13, 2013: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
January 27, 2013: no penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
February 3, 2013: +$25
February 10, 2013: +$50
After that: My unending wrath, +$100, and a guarantee you will be dropped from the field if you haven't negotiated an extension before then.

Payment Deadline (NEW): February 16, 2013 (your payment must be postmarked by this date).

Please submit your packet to [email protected]; the actual email with attached packet should include the phrase "[name of school + A/B/etc. if applicable) PACKET" in the subject line. In order to meet any particular deadline, your packet must be in our inbox by 11:59 pm PST on the stated day.

As alluded to above, extensions *may* be granted after the final February 10 deadline, but are at my discretion and will certainly not be granted if the request appears mysteriously at 11:58 pm the night of the deadline.

Packet Penalties: Be sure to fully read the information contained in the Packet Guidelines. Any cases of incorrect formatting, plagiarism, or prohibited question types will result in hefty fees. The editors also reserve the right to send back any egregious cases to be fixed by the team in question, so be sure to do it right the first time.

Please note that in cases of plagiarism in particular, I have now graded many a term paper and edited many a tournament, and I will catch you. This is doubtless because if you have decided to plagiarize from past questions/wikipedia/wherever, you are an idiot; I encourage you to cut your losses with that rather than compounding the situation with plagiarism.

New in 2013

Please note that ACF Regionals, like all ACF events, is using the new centralized payment system this year. Some updates will be made, but the general information on how this worked for ACF Fall are available in this thread.

Also note the change in Division II eligibility rules (also in place for ACF Fall), as announced here.

Please submit all questions/comments/etc. regarding this event to [email protected], or post them in the thread. Running packet list (with deadlines/penalties) will appear below as soon as packets begin to come in.

Best,
Chris Ray
ACF Regionals 2013 Head Editor

February 10, 2013: +$50
As alluded to above, extensions *may* be granted after the final February 8 deadline [...]
Hopefully this will not apply to most teams, but which is it? Or is there some subtle difference I'm missing?

Sorry, that was left over from last year's template. Of course, if you're interested in hosting again. . .

Now that NAQT has put out its list of sites, is there an update from ACF for Regionals sites? In particular, what became of the submitted Northeast site bid?

Let me gently suggest that saying Rob's from "Ball So Hard University" is pretty funny but is bad for PR.

If you're going to insult the BHSU distance learning program like this, you're going to have to take it up with Dean of Students Shawn Carter.

We will have a list of sites, as well as a registration email, up over the next few days. We're still looking for or finalizing sites for some regions; in particular, if anyone in the southeast is interested in hosting Regionals, we would love to hear from you as soon as possible at [email protected].

Clearly the distance learning program is doing a bang-up job of teaching people how to form acronyms.

You may now register for ACF Regionals using this web form. We will be working with hosts to get the individual site announcements up shortly (hosts: you will be hearing from us soon!). Please note that our confirmed sites have been edited into the first post in this thread.

Greetings, is there any way the ACF Regionals registration form could be update to include the University of South Carolina site? This would help reduce confusion. Thanks!

As of tomorrow, ACF will have an official bank account, and I will begin sending out Regionals invoices. You'll be making your checks out to the Academic Competition Federation; I will also start looking into the possibility of Internet payments (via Paypal or some other scheme) and will keep you all updated on how that goes.

As an update to hosts, I'm currently projecting 15-16 packets for this tournament. A more precise count will be in by the Monday or Tuesday before the tournament.

As of right now, if you have submitted a packet, you should have received an invoice for ACF Regionals. If there are any discrepancies between my numbers and yours, or if you need me to fill out a W-9 for ACF, please get in touch with me. Please also note that you will be making checks out directly to "Academic Competition Federation."

If you are not a US team and are therefore not paying in US currency, please hold off on sending me a check. I'm looking into electronic payment methods which will hopefully be convenient for both you and us, and will spare us the various charges attendant to depositing foreign checks.

If you are a host, please be aware that trophies are shipping today and tomorrow. The time it takes to receive them is proportional to your distance from Massachusetts, so UCSD should expect to receive them Thursday or Friday of next week; everyone else should be getting them sooner. If you haven't received the trophies by Thursday, please get in touch with me.

Hey everyone,

If you haven't gotten an invoice yet, you'll get it soon; there's a backlog of them because teams are doing things like registering late and submitting late packets, plus I've been on the road for work-related reasons. I'm working on clearing that backlog right now, and it should be done by the end of the weekend. Don't worry about the two-week thing, because obviously I don't expect you to pay two weeks before the deadline when you've only registered one week before the tournament and I haven't gotten around to processing your registration yet.
