MUT Mirror at Valencia: May 11, 2013

Post by ValenciaQBowl »

Valencia is going to host a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament on Saturday, May 11. This tournament is open to any CC player and to undergraduate players from four-year colleges or universities. Our field will mostly comprise CC teams, but of course we're happy to have teams from any school.

Here's the fee schedule:
$120 base fee
-$10 for a reader/scorer we use
-$10 for bringing a buzzer (up to two)
-$10 for second team and third team
Minimum fee for first team = $90, for second and third team = $80

Super-special premium deal: I will waive all registration fees for any out-of-Florida CC that attends. Sorry, four-year folk, I'm not offering you that deal; after all, there's a MUT mirror in Alabama you might want to consider if you're not in Florida already.

Field Updates:
Valencia (2)
UCF
Chipola (2)
Manatee
FSC-Jax
Lake Sumter
Seminole (iffy)
Central Florida College (2)
Stetson (waiting for confirmation)
UF (2)

Stetson would be interested (and we're actually decent now!), so we'll see if we can scrounge up the cash. After a semester of laziness, we're finally on the ball.

If Sean graduated in April and the tournament is in May, he still qualifies, right?

Who is Sean? But anyway, it's okay with me--sounds like a technical question for the Minnesotans, otherwise.

But especially as long as Sean (we're surely not talking about Platzer, as he's at UF, not UCF, right?) isn't some superstar player, I see no problem with it. We're all playing for positions behind Kelson dominance here anyway, I reckon.

I'm fine with it; email Gaurav if you want a more authoritative opinion than that.

He was on Mickey's team last year at MUT when they lost to Kelson the Elder. So I don't think anyone will cry foul too much.

Thanks, everyone. I'll let him know he can play.

Dallin has tentatively planned that the 7 of us planning to go will be on 2 teams.

Hmm, Benjamin--I think that having mixed teams is against the MUT expectations. However, I have been hoping to get a USF program going, and one of my former Valencians is over there, so maybe if he wants to play I could see if CJ Brown wants to come over, and we can make them a USF team? But if that doesn't work (CJ has transportation issues), I won't have a problem with your using a brand noob IF the Minnesotans are okay with it.

Ruling, 'Sotans?

I'd prefer to keep things mixed by team, but since USF seems to be a dormant program and your friend has never played quizbowl, I'd be willing to allow it.

Congrats to Chipola Blue for winning the Valencia mirror of MUT. Paul Kelson of that team was high scorer with over 140 ppg. UF A finished second, led by Kelson the Elder, aka Dallin. UCF was third and Valencia Red fourth.

The stats will be uploaded later by someone smarter and more hard-working than I. There will be a couple weirdnesses as one team left with two games to go and another with one to go. But you'll get the gist if you're interested.

Thanks to the Minnesotans for writing the set!
