Architecture Side Event (but actually this time)

Post by Kouign Amann »

I am now finishing up this event. I figure that delivering the final product two years after the promised completion date is pretty much perfect for a tournament about architecture. At least I'm not 500% over-budget. This tournament will be available for play at VCU Open Sunday and its mirrors.

Barring last-minute disaster, there will be seven packets, and the (totally arbitrary and definitely not ideal) distribution will be roughly like this:

1 Classical Mediterranean and environs (in space and time)
1 Medieval-ish
1 Renaissance
1 Everything after the Renaissance but still in the "Classical tradition" (including twentieth-century resistance to modernism)
5 "Modernism" in all its flavors
5 "Contemporary" (approximately: stuff built in my lifetime)
1 Questions that jump through multiple time periods (some common-links on cities, etc.)
1 Non-Western
1 Architectural theory and urban planning
1 The very exciting architectural trash category

This adds up to 18 questions. The remaining two will come from a rotating bump-up of the one-question categories.

Doubles or triples would probably be good for this event, but if the general will is for singles or quads (or a big Knot shoot-out), I'm open to it. I'm asking $5 per person.

I'm looking for a teammate for this who can answer questions on things like non-western, renaissance, classical and medieval.

This is now happening from 10-12 AM in the James Branch Cabell Library, which is just across the street from Harris Hall. Hopefully this will both allow people with afternoon flights to play and provide more time on Sunday for things like Mike Cheyne's packet. Please use the spreadsheet above to sign up in advance. The spreadsheet DOES constitute an official registration. There's a field cap of 8 doubles teams due to the number of rooms available and the size of the rooms.

We will meet up outside the library at 9:55 so we can enter when it opens at 10. If you're late, go to room 240.

A change: I've cut this to six rounds so that I can spend this week fixing up the mediocre questions I wrote two years ago instead of rushing out another packet. I'll also be powermarking the set.

Cameron Orth is not terribly enthused about playing this tournament with me, so if anyone is interested in joining my team I am available. I am currently 2/3 of the way through a class on modern and contemporary architecture and have a decent background in classical, non-western and Renaissance stuff.

Alright, let's do this. I have no background in any of those things but have played quizbowl and written questions.

Evan and Tommy cleared the field at this event. Thanks to Cody for doing stats, which he will put up at some point. Thanks also to Jacob Wasserman, who wrote 11 questions for this tournament, which really helped me out. I'm glad people seemed to be having a good time; thanks for playing. If anyone else wants to run this anywhere, let me know in the next few days; otherwise, I'll post the set.

We'll probably run this at our VCUO mirror in two weeks.

I don't know, I didn't even know this mirror was happening. The odds are low, honestly, but it would be nice to have some information or a formal announcement so I could make a decision.

I'll try and get Rob or someone more closely connected to the club to make an "announcement," but it will be in Minneapolis on Saturday, August 17 (with side events to be both on that Saturday and the Friday night beforehand, although the Friday night stuff may or may not be on campus). The format for the tournament is unclear. Wee!

Hey, this tournament was really fun and well-done, especially given the difficult task of writing 6 packets of architecture questions. I encourage anyone who's on the fence at other sites to play this event.

I'd like to mirror this somewhere in the Northeast, though I'm not sure what level of interest it would get.

The stats for this are definitely wrong, because I didn't play this event. I'm pretty sure that should be Will Holub-Moorman in the stats, not me.
