Hello!
Now that Hallowe'en is over and you're all high on sugar, please plan on coming to our 8th annual Hybrid Tournament. This tournament is open to all, and is packet-submission (please use ACF formatting and (ACF Fall) length restrictions). Difficulty level is mild to medium: we promise no bonuses on 3 different Antiguan authors this year.

Speaking of which, our distribution:
Academic
2/3 or 3/2 Science (1 bio, 1 chem, 1 physics, 1 minor science, 1 your choice)
2/3 or 3/2 Lit (1 Continental Europe, 1 world or ancient, 1 British, 1 Canadian/American, 1 your choice)
2/3 or 3/2 History (1 Continental Europe, 1 “Anglosphere” [Britain/Canada/US/Aus/NZ], 1 World, 1 Ancient, 1 your choice)
1/1 RMP (1 philosophy, 1 religion or myth)
1/1 Fine Art (1 visual, 1 aural)
0/1 or 1/0 Social Sciences
0/1 or 1/0 Geography
0/1 or 1/0 Current academic events

Trash
2/2 Sports (3 of american football, ice hockey, baseball, basketball, 1 other)
2/2 Movies
2/2 TV
2/2 Music (maximum of 1/0 or 0/1 pre-dating 1980)
1/1 Video games
1/1 Trash lit (genre literature, comic books, comic strips, popular fiction)
0/1 or 1/0 Other (internet, commercials, products, stores, board games, general pop culture, etc. This Can Also be More Trash Lit)
0/1 or 1/0 Trash Current Events (Baby bumps, Taylor Swift songs about the metric ton of people she has broken up with, etc.)

We're also looking for mirrors: our mirror fee is $15 per team, dropped to $10 for hosts that write a pack. Interesting trades considered (Kramer made me put that in).

Announcement follows:
What: THE BEST TOURNAMENT EVER (Ottawa Hybrid 2014)
When: March 8, 2014, @ 9 AM SHARP
Where: Main Site uOttawa Campus, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Fee: $120, Minimum Fee $0 (But we, like, won't pay you, ie, no negative fees)

Discounts:
Distance (over 200 kilometres one way) $-15
All-High School Team: $-20
Buzzers: $-10 per working set (no maximum, but no BuzzBox buzzers because Jordan Palmer will, like a Male Lion which takes over a pride and spots cubs that are not his, DESTROY THEM SO THEY CAN'T REPRODUCE)
Laptops: $-5 per working laptop, maximum 4 per team
Staff: $-15 for each competent staffer (MUST be available each round, but the individual supplied can vary by round)
International: $-10 (of our funny-colored, Monopoly-esque money)
New-to-Ottawa Hybrid (Either all-new-to-OHT players, or the majority of a team of new players affiliated with a school that has never played OHT before): $-15
New-to-Quizbowl (Same criteria above, all quizbowl events, but not Reach, counted): $-20

This is addition to the awesome Packet-Writing Discount, the schedule for which is:
$-50 – Sunday, January 5, 2014
$-25 – Sunday, January 19, 2014
No Penalty – Sunday, February 2, 2014
$+25 – Sunday, February 16, 2014
$+50 – Sunday, February 23, 2014 (end of reading week)
After the +50 deadline, it's $+10 per day (regardless), and you need to seek permission to enter.
Although last year we were somewhat lenient with the deadlines, this isn't the case this year. 1 minute (ish, aka same night) over still gets you the discount-1 day over does not.

Submissions/Questions/Concerns/Threats go to [email protected].

There is also a facebook group where happenings are also discussed, although everything important is here as well.

You may get a Buffalo team for this. I may also just write a pack for funsies.

Out of curiosity, are we allowed to mix-n-match players from different schools? This is code for "I don't want to write and answer sports, music, or comic book questions."

Lastly, if I have SPACE done in time for this, would people want to play it?

The tournament is completely open to anyone, including friends, family, alumni-no team composition is mandated at all.

I am the Head Editor, although my idiocy is tempered by most of the same editorial team from last year (Shelby Robert, Dennis Beeby, Brendan MxKendy, etc?) plus Joe Su editing science.

We would LOVE to have SPACE. Is that the thing (originally?) scheduled for DRAGOON?

I am 95% sure I will be at the tournament. What role I take (staff, player, bail-out writer) will depend on several factors, but I will make a decision as details of this tournament progress.

Am I overlooking something, or is the distribution only 22/22 rather than a more typical 24/24?

Hooray! I may post asking for teammates down the road.

Yes, that's the one. I postponed writing most of it on account of me having no free time. I can probably have it ready for March, though.

I am super pumped for this, even if my knowledge of space trash is non-existent and my knowledge of astronomy is not as good as it was five years ago. (Hint: going to need a teammate who knows space trash)

You can probably limit that to one per team with a smaller discount because there just aren't enough working buzzers in the region.

If you decide to change your mind and permit BuzzBox Buzzers, Colonel By will promise to actually bring a laptop this time, I swear.

I think we can all agree that :

Regular buzzers > BuzzBox > Slap rooms.

Therefore what I'd propose is simply inform teams that they are welcome to bring their BuzzyBoos, but that they will only be used (and hence the team will only get the discount) if there aren't enough actual buzzer systems (lowest priority). That is, they will only be used in order to avoid slap rooms.

Seems like the obvious solution to me. The only question would be which team's BuzzyBoos get used in the event that multiple teams bring them.

By and large, though, I am in favour of excluding BuzzBoxes from buzzer discounts. No one is here for the BuzzyBoos. You go, Jordan Palmer!

Count Mac in for whatever shennanigans are going down. Imma try to get my horrible VEXATION tournament up and running for use as a side-event as well. And I'm open to Zach's suggestion of mix-n-matching teams, it could be fun. Any suggestions of such conglomerations are welcome!

Waterloo is confirming 2 teams for this that hope to have their packets ready by the first submission deadline.

I'll see if I can produce a third team.

Awesome! The top post is kind of crowded so I'll keep a running team list here:
Waterloo (2-3)
Colonel By
Carleton (4)
Penn Eh
Jay Misuk's Fabulous Stories

Just a reminder that the -$50 deadline is January 5, so the winter break represents a great way to rest and catch up to make that deadline!!!!
We're also still looking for mirrors-have had several inquiries, so if you want to mirror, the sooner you let us know the better.

Happy Holidays!

They are the buzzers used for Playstation Buzz! games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz!

They can be plugged into the USB port of a computer and used as a regular lock-out system with the use of this free program: http://www.shelty.ca/buzzbox2.html

While they are significantly cheaper than any true lock-out system (I got a set of 8 for $20), they have their shortcomings (the biggest one being that they require a laptop to function).

Carleton will send 4 teams to this. We'll also have real buzzers, buzzbox buzzers if you need them, an indeterminate number of laptops, and possibly a staffer or two.

Just a reminder that the end of this weekend is the first ($-50) deadline for packet submissions, making this weekend an excellent time to stay in and finish your pack (especially in the winter-ravaged parts of the continent). Also a reminder that we are still looking for mirrors, and hosts can reduce the mirror fee by writing.

Happy New Year!

A quick note:

There's a temptation, when you submit trash questions, to write jokes into the questions, and then to be excited to hear those questions played at a tournament -- which amounts to you sharing a joke with people via the questions you submit. This is fun and it's totally allowed, but it has a very low chance of working. For your joke to stay in the tournament, either the editors have to also find it funny, or it has to be written into a very playable question.

Please do not show up to this tournament excited to hear a moderator read a specific joke you wrote, because that will almost never work out. Your serious questions will be modified and used (especially if you're one of the seven or so hero-teams that submitted early), but your jokes will probably not make the cut. My joke questions all got edited out too -- this is just how things work.

(A disclaimer, of course, is that the edit crew may get drunk on power and use a lot of their own jokes. I will try to avoid doing this.)

'Cause they were lame. And c'mon man, you know we'll get letters if we let you go on about how the Moon landing didn't happen and how World War II was just a conspiracy to promote Rosie the Riveter [Brendan doesn't believe this-or does he...???] The End?).

Two more teams submitted at the $0 deadline-Michigan State and Carleton C. Really excited!

I have added the teams above, and also made explicit what happens after the $+50 deadline.

A quick reminder that teams are now pushing against increasing packet penalties-please submit asap.

Just a reminder that you have one week (from today) to get your pack in (after which the penalty, which is already at +$50, is +$10 per day and admission only at the Tournament Director's discretion). If you are planning on attending and have not submitted your pack yet, a sense of urgency is recommended.

Hello All Tournament Attendees:
I hope you're all as excited as I am for the latest incarnation of the Ottawa Hybrid Tournament, taking place this Saturday (March 8th).

Just a few things, logistically:
1) We are meeting in Room 5023 in the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) Building. From there, you will have an opportunity to pay, receive a schedule, ask any questions you might have, get physically lifted by a random person who has not done that before (I believe only Aayush, who is trying to get pictures of him getting picked up by as many people as possible in the way most people collect autographs, will be in for this), etc. before heading to your first rooms.

2) If you are bringing buzzers or laptops, please get there no later than 8:40. If you are playing, please get there so we can start play at 9 AM SHARP.

3) If you are paying by cheque (or "check"), please make it out to "University of Ottawa Trivia Club."

4) Ottawa is still chilly/snowy, so please dress warmly and plan plenty of time for driving/walking (nothing sucks as much as slipping on the ice). If you need directions/parking info, it's better to ask now than later. And finally, if you feel like it might be a good idea (I do), please send me a cellphone that will be on you the day of the tournament, and I will reciprocate.

5) We're not providing lunch, but the University has many different lunch options (including an unlimited-bacon buffet), and we hope to be generous with the lunch time-allowance.

Any questions/comments/concerns, please let me know.

Looking forward to seeing y'all!

Thanks to everyone who came to this tournament (special props to our waay-out-of-town teams Michigan State, McMaster and Waterloo-it was great to see you all), and contributed to its competitive, sportsman(sportsperson?)like and fun atmosphere. Congratulations to the Waterloo team that won (I put Waterloo B on the facebook page but apparently this is the wrong letter, causing much merriment) in a very close final.

Thanks to our awesome staff, without whom this tournament could not have run; these heroes include Shelby Robert, Ben Smith, Joe Su, Dennis Beeby, Jon Weber, Oscar Mou, Charles Korwin, Greg Leverton, and a really cool contingent from Lisgar HS (apologies to anyone I missed-you're still awesome!)

Speaking of another group whose work made this tournament a success, thank you to our writing team (of those not mentioned above, Brendan McKendy and Radu Popescu were important members of the editing team). Also, thank you to all of the teams who submitted packets (some were very well written and some were very good first attempts). Thanks!

Eep! Thanks to basically everyone who was at this tournament and those who could not make it due to previous commitments to their iPhones. Was an excellent weekend

Special thanks to ADR, Jay Misuk and Kira Vimal who drove us around, Joe Su for very kindly letting some of us stay with him, Nick Penner and Jordan Palmer for being very huggable and Peter Liu for being the bravest man I know after Lea Michele. And of course to Xtine Irwin for providing the much-needed Britney Spears presence and to Huma Zafar for being Huma Zafar.

And to Dennis Beeby whom I adore more than life and Shelby Robert who hates my guts. I *AM* a nice thing. I am beautiful, no matter what Shelby says. WORDS CAN'T BRING ME DOWN.

Thanks writers, editors, readers, scorers and singers.

And none for Arjun Sondhi, bye.
