Not to derail the thread, but what difficulty do people want this tournament to be at? I personally enjoyed last year's CO History, with its somewhat tamer difficulty and answer selection, more than the previous year's, though I do think its questions were a bit longer than necessary (not sure why you need to write ten or eleven lines on the Taiwan Straits Crisis). I understand that CO is not meant for the faint-hearted and that crazy stuff is part of its wonder and appeal, but I also do prefer games with more middle and early buzzes (which have the added advantage of making sure the day goes faster).

I'm interested in playing this tournament. I am old and don't know anything so don't expect me to win you any games. Anyone who is into losing should definitely team up with me.

I am also old, know even less than Jerry, and would like to register myself as a free agent for a Loaseathon the likes of which has never been seen before.

EDIT: Jerry and I will team up for this event after realizing that we both remembered where we were and what we were doing when we heard that Cromwell had dissolved Parliament. Our team name will be "Ye Manifest Virtuef of Children Guarding Themfelves Afar from ye Lawnes of their Elderf." Jeff, if you can't find a copy of this pamphlet on your own, I'll be glad to show you the copy I "borrowed" from a London coffeehouse back in 1650.

I reiterate that it will be much easier to just shift to 4-person teams than to try and work with threes, which could get messy and split existing pairs up.

I don't know if we've decided on a final team format or not, but if we decide to go with a "third players join already-formed two-player teams" model, would anyone mind adhering to a sort of "gentlemen's agreement" wherein the stronger teams don't take on third players before the weaker ones do? I think that would make this tournament more competitive and interesting.

This is one of the many reasons why I think that just combining existing duos into teams of four would be much more elegant.

Not to beat the same drum excessively, but it might help solve all of the scheduling problem, the tournament-length-given-other-stuff-in-schedule problem, and the packet submission problem (i.e. each person has less to write) if we expanded out to standard-size teams and capped the field at 9 of those. Each packet would be a single submission, plus two editors/finals packets to cap things off as needed.

I don't like the idea of four-man history teams if all the top history players get condensed onto one or two squads (does anyone want to face the Matt Bollinger/Jordan Brownstein/Chris Ray/whoever wrecking machine?). Being assigned to pair up with other teams is unappealing and/or free agents but might be a nice way of resolving things.

This is a competition and people should feel free to play to win, whatever the arrangements are. Insisting that other people not play to win just because you don't want to do so is a bit much.

Now that CO packet submission has begun, it would seem prudent to try to finally work things out so people can get to work on packets for this event as well. I don't have many more constructive solutions to offer at this time beyond what I've already said, though.

OK, here we go.

Due to the strength of demand for this tournament, we are officially switching to four-player teams and an 11-team field cap.

That's a total of 44 players (there are currently 37 registered players and several more expressed interest).

The distribution for a full packet would look like this:

US history 7 (one question: to 1789; two questions: 1789-1877, since 1877, your choice)

European history 7 (at least one each ancient, medieval, early modern, late modern; no more than two from the same country)

World history 7 (at least one each: Latin America; Africa; Middle East/Central Asia/South Asia; East Asia and Southeast Asia)

Your choice 3 (including areas not listed above, as well as questions of transnational or global significance)

If it's just 11 teams, are we doing a packet-sub RR followed by finals rather than whatever other thing is in the original post? Is there a deadline for the packets? Presuming target difficulty is "roughly the same as 3M" unless otherwise instructed.

Matthew J wrote:Presuming target difficulty is "roughly the same as 3M" unless otherwise instructed.
3M difficulty is a good target difficulty for submitted packets.

Some thoughts on my goals for this tournament:

0. My primary objective is to ask about important things that people have real knowledge of.

1. Expect the editors packets to have significant quantities of both "description acceptable" and "warning: things have names" moderator notes.

2. I would like to encourage the moderate and restrained use of historiography clues. Expect questions about works that are widely read, about historians whose works are well-known outside of history Ph.D. programs, and (especially) conceptual questions that reward players for their historiographical knowledge without making the entire question about historiography. Please keep in mind that, even at this tournament, most of the field does not have graduate-level training in history.

3. Related to (2): this is a Chicago Open side event. There is going to be some difficult material here, and I will cheerfully accept both "this is a new-to-quizbowl thing that is studied in college history classes" and "this is an erratically-spinning object from the outer Kuiper Belt of the shadow canon" variants. That being said: please do not submit entire packets of extremely difficult material. If more than 20% of your submission falls into what Cody describes as "this should show up Nowhere as a tossup", or if you're contemplating "this tossup would fit right in as the hard part of a bonus at CO History 2013," it's time to tone it down a bit. (The 2013 edition of CO History was one of my all-time favorite tournaments, precisely because it had bonuses of outrageous difficulty. Let's try to avoid writing eleven-line tossups on answers one or two people in this field have heard of.)
