PADAWAN at Brown, 10/11/14

Post by Doga (Dog Yoga) »

This is the announcement for Brown's mirror of PADAWAN, to be held on October 11th, 2014. The original tournament information can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16139.

The tournament is being held in Wilson Hall (NOT the same building as J. Walter Wilson). Wilson Hall is the same building where MFT and SUBMIT were last year. It is located on Brown's Main Green; the closest parking would be on the streets around that area. A campus map may be viewed here: http://brown.edu/Facilities/Facilities_Management/maps/

We expect the tournament to begin at 9 AM, hoping to have arrivals by 8:30 AM. Registration will take place in Wilson 102. The tournament should go until about 6 PM. Brown is not providing food, but Wilson Hall is only a block away from Thayer Street, which has many options for food.

Fees:

Base fee: $120 per team

Buzzer discount: -$5 per working buzzer, no limit on the amount of buzzers
Staffer discount: -$15 per competent moderator, who reads for the entire day
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles one-way according to Google Maps.

The minimum fee is $40. Please pay by cash or check to "Brown University Quiz Bowl." Payment is due at check-in, before the tournament begins.

Up to six players may play on a team; any more than that, and you will have to register an additional team. Four players will play at a time, with substitutions at halftime. Players must play on the same team all day (no switching from A team to B team). Teams who play with 1 or 2 players will have a discount on the fee, but teams with 3 players will not be discounted.

We are currently capping the field at 12 teams; above this, you will be placed on a wait list. If we have enough staffers, rooms, and interest, the field cap may rise. Please register by emailing [email protected] with a subject line of "PADAWAN Registration for [Your team here]" and the following information: number of teams, number of buzzers, number of staffers, a contact e-mail address, and an emergency cell phone number in case of necessary contact the day of the tournament.

Hope to see you all in Providence.

I have just sent a registration e-mail for 1 team from the University of Ottawa, and (while I don't speak for him) I believe a further registration will come from McMaster University's Jay Misuk.

Looking forward to seeing Rhode Island and Providence Plantations for the first time.

Hey guys, just wanted to say that there are only 2 spots left at this tournament! Unless our club grows more than I expect, or we get a lot of staffers, I don't think we'll be able to expand the field.

Thanks!

By the way, it's not specified in the tournament announcement, but teams of 1 or 2 people get a -$20 discount.

UConn has dropped; Dartmouth can't come. If Wellesley can't come either, we'll either have 11 teams and run a round-robin with a bye round, or field a house team and run a round-robin without a bye round.

Thanks to everyone who came to the tournament. Columbia swept the field with an 11-0 record, with MIT A in second. Thanks to Abid Haseeb, Rohith Nagari, Kirun Sankaran, Leo Cooper, Thomas Culver, Denise Yoon, Will Nober, Dayton Wilson, Raizella Berman, and Kelton Ellis for staffing. Thanks a lot to Sajal Datty for keeping stats.

A huge Thank You to all the organizers, volunteers who staffed, and all the competitors to make this a very enjoyable (if rainy) day at Wilson Hall! I enjoyed meeting many of you (and seeing some old friends) and look forward to seeing you soon!

Awesome tournament today! Well-run, friendly staff, good company, and a book prize is always appreciated. Thanks to the crew at Brown for hosting today!
