DEES at Rice University - January 17, 2015

Post by Victor Prieto »

I am pleased to announce that Rice University will be hosting a mirror of DEES on January 17, 2015. I, Victor Prieto, will serve as tournament director. More details about the set can be found here. UPDATE: as the eligibility rules for this tournament have been drastically changed (namely, teams are no longer required to submit packets), we are resetting the entry fees to $120, but reintroducing the staffer discount.

Distribution
*5/5 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European after 500 CE, .5/.5 World, 1.5/1.5 Anything. Please be sure to represent poetry, drama, and fiction and incorporate different time periods and nations)
*5/5 History (1/1 American, 1/1 World History, 3/3 European/Canadian/Australian, with 1 question on classical history, 1 on British history, and 3 on continental Europe included)
*5/5 Science (1/1 Bio, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Chemistry [only 1 organic chemistry question], 1/1 Math and optional Computer Science [i.e. you can either write 1/1 math or 1 math and one CS), 1/1 Astronomy and Earth Science)
*3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, 1/1 Other, with both visual and auditory arts represented)
*3/3 RMP (1/1 Myth [1 Greco-Roman, 1 other], 1/1 Religion [1 Judeo-Christian, 1 other], 1/1 Philosophy [please vary time periods])
*1/1 Social Science (to copy the ACF guidelines – “Possible topics for this category include economics, psychology, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, political science, social criticism, and law. The two questions should not come from the same field of study. Questions on Supreme Court cases go under history; other law questions may go here.)
*The remaining 2/2 will comprise of a single question from each of the following categories: Popular Culture, Current Events, Geography, and “Your Choice.” I want your choice to be a wild place for you to write questions about something that doesn’t neatly fit in another category but which is interesting.

Fees and Payment
$120 base fee per team
-$5 per working buzzer system
-$10 travel discount per 100 miles travelled (one-way, as determined by Google)
-$20 per staffer

Please bring payment on the morning of the tournament in the form of cash or a check made out to "Rice University Quiz Bowl." If a discount is claimed for a buzzer system is not functioning, we will revoke the discount.

Eligibility
This tournament is open to any team whose players attend the same school, whether it be college or high school. High school teams are subject to the same packet writing rules.
UPDATE: This tournament is now open to both teams whose players all attend the same school and open teams comprised of players who do not attend any institution.

Logistics
The tournament will be in the Humanities building here at Rice University. I'll tentatively set the start time at 9:00 am, with teams expected to arrive by 8:45 am.

To register for this tournament, or if you have any questions, please post here and/or email me at wasabix10x at gmail dot com.

I've updated the initial post to reflect the change in eligibility policy for this tournament.

Any update on the field, specifically regarding the number of teams from each school? We will only be bringing one team.

It looks like this will be a six team round robin at the moment. We can adjust the number of house teams to reflect the number of teams Texas A&M brings, to make the field at minimum six teams.

Billy Beyer stole my thunder, but yes, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas A&M both ended up at 8-2 after a six team double round robin (Louisiana lost twice to A&M, while both of A&M's losses were at the hands of Rice A). The third game between Louisiana and Texas A&M ended in victory for the Ragin' Cajuns. Thanks to everyone who came!
