DEES Online: January 3rd, 2015

Post by Victor Prieto »

Hi everyone,

This is the announcement for the online edition of DEES, to be held in cyberspace on January 3rd, 2015. The fee will be $80 per team (no discounts). Team members do not need to be in the same location in order to play. The eligibility rules are exactly the same as they are for the other mirrors, detailed here. Please don't skip out on local mirrors without a good reason. If you are within reasonable driving distance of a physical mirror but are opting to play the online tournament, please explain the aforementioned good reason to me.

If you are interested in playing, please email me with your roster. This thread can be used to find teammates, and if desired, I can set up a google spreadsheet as well.

Further logistical details will be figured out once we have a good estimate of how many teams will be playing.

I'm not completely sure of my schedule, but I'd be interested in playing the online mirror.

EDIT (12/31/14): I have to work on the day of this, so I'm withdrawing from the free agents list (if there is one).

I would be interested in playing this, but most of my teammates can't, and don't want to play solo. Would a team of "High Schoolers" like those used at some mirrors be allowed?

I would also be interested in playing on any such High Schoolers team.

Brendan McKendy and I will likely be forming an open team for this and would be happy for more teammates.

A fun question: Can I play this tournament if I've already talked about the set with someone? Some friends played this in November. I probably asked "How was the tournament?" and got exposed to info about 5 tossups.

If playing, I obviously wouldn't answer any questions I remembered hearing about. Is the honour system good enough for me to just play in an online open tournament like this?

I'm interested in playing, and I'll see if I can find other UNC people to play with me.

Please note that I've edited the announcement with the following details:
I, at the top of this page, wrote:If you are interested in playing, please email me with your roster. This thread can be used to find teammates, and if desired, I can set up a google spreadsheet as well.
Rule: if you are a high schooler who wants to play on an open team, I'll allow it. However, all players from your school must play on the same team (assuming four or less people from your high school are playing). Basically, you can't ditch your teammates for better teammates from other schools.

I'm sorry, I can't allow you to play.

Hopping on the staffing train, I may also be able to read for this, though I won't be 100% sure until a bit closer to the date.

There's a non-zero chance Alberta plays this but will refrain from an official registration for the time being.

We have a handful of teams currently registered, still hoping to see more. I'll close registration on January 1st, but I'll probably send out some sort of information email to teams signed up prior to that.

Hi everyone,

I'm closing registration for this at noon tomorrow, and shortly afterward, I'll send a logistical email to the teams signed up above.

In advance of my email, I'd like to ask everyone signed up to make every reasonable effort to consolidate on one computer, obtain decent computer equipment for a good Skype connection, register for a Skype account if you don't have one, and reserve a nice quiet space they can stay in from 10 AM to 7 PM Eastern time (which will be the start time unless someone from the West Coast signs up).

Thanks!

In an eight team round robin which split into an upper and lower bracket, Harvard went undefeated in the prelims and playoffs, while Duke, Michigan State and Cantwell et al. made it to the top bracket and secured one win apiece. This tournament's ten rounds ran from 11 am to 7:30 pm EST, which I think is decent for an online tournament. Much praise and thanks to my awesome moderators, Gautam, Joelle, Jason, and Tejas. Stats will be uploaded later.

Stats are up, but something weird is happening with the win/loss records in the prelim and playoff files. The combined file is perfectly fine, though. Matt Weiner saved the day.
