VCU Open at Michigan - August 8
The traditional Michigan mirror of VCU Open will take place on August 8 on the 4th floor of Lorch Hall, starting at 9 A.M.
As is also traditional, since we aren't able to book rooms in the summer, we will be squatting in the few rooms which aren't locked. As such, I'll be capping the field at 8 teams for now. We haven't had problems with getting kicked out of rooms in the last couple years, but be warned that we might need to get creative.
There will be room for side events afterwards (and also on Sunday, if people are interested in staying); there seem to be a lot of side events shaping up, so we'll have plenty of options.
To register a team officially, send me an email at [email protected], listing your probable roster and how many buzzers you'll be bringing.
This tournament will cost a mere $80 per team to play, with a $5 discount for a working buzzer set ($60 minimum).
Information about the set, copied from the original announcement (see the original announcement for a link to the unofficial team formation spreadsheet):
Set Details
VCUO ‘15 will be written and edited by Cody Voight, Will Nediger, Evan Adams, Kenji Golimlim, and Matt Bollinger. The difficulty is “Regionals+”, as defined by VCUO ‘11.
Writing breakdown:
Cody—Science (with contributions from Akhil Garg); Music; Film (Fine Arts and Trash); Geography
Will—British, European, and World Literature; Painting & Film; Trash Music; Philosophy and Social Science
Evan—American Literature; American History; Misc. Fine Arts; Religion; Trash TV
Kenji—European and World History; Current Events; some Trash
Matt—British and Classical History; Myth; some Trash
VCUO ‘15 will be implementing a Gaddis-style difficulty quota for answerlines, based on a 4-point scale:
1 – ACF Fall
2 – ACF Regionals
3 – ACF Nationals
4 – ++
Each packet will have approximately (4) 1’s, (8) 2’s, (6) 3’s, and (2) 4’s. This is a difficulty ceiling, not floor, so an answerline that might appear at ACF Fall can be categorized as a 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Tossups are hard-capped at 8 lines for 1’s and 7 lines for 2-4’s.
As the name implies, VCUO ‘15 is an open tournament and there are no eligibility restrictions.
Distribution
VCUO ‘15 will consist of 15 packets. The distribution is modeled on VCUO ‘11 and is as follows:
4/4 Literature (30% American, 30% British, 25% European, 15% World)
4/4 History (25% American, 25% European, 20% World, 15% British, 15% Classical)
4/4 Science (25% Biology, 16.67% Chemistry, 25% Physics, 11.67% Math, 11.67% Earth Science, 5% Astronomy, 5% Computer Science)
3/3 Fine Arts (split evenly between Painting, Music, and Miscellaneous Arts)
2/2 R/M (split evenly between Religion and Myth)
1/1 Trash
1/1 P/SS (split evenly between Philosophy and Social Science)
1/1 G/C/GK (40% Geography, 40% Current Events, 20% Geography, Current Events, or “General Knowledge”)
An additional 5/5 tiebreakers will be provided as a separate packet—1/1 each from Literature, History, Science, Fine Arts, and Religion/Myth.
Current field
Connor Teevens/Alston Boyd/Adam Fine/Mike Cheyne (2 buzzers)
Collin Parks/Sid Dogra/Dylan Minarik/Morgan Venkus
Rob Carson/Auroni Gupta/Gautam Kandlikar/Trevor Davis (0-2 buzzers)
Matt Lafer/Mike Bentley/Jerry Vinokurov/Andrew Hart
Carsten Gehring/Foster Hughes/Ryan Westbrook/Ashvin Srivatsa
Andrew Wang/Jason Asher/Ike Jose/Mike Sorice (1+ buzzers)
Nolan Esser/Kurtis Droge/Andrew Nadig/Bryan Berend
Seth Teitler/Selene Koo/Noah Prince/Casey Bindas
Tentative side event schedule
Saturday: Main event followed by SHEIKH
Sunday: VICO, We Have Never Been Modern, leftover CO packets (and Tricon, if there's time)
Side event team formation spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

About 95% sure I'll be in Michigan when this happens. Looking for teammates. Also, I'll express interest in doing side events if any happen on Saturday, rather than Sunday.

If I can get the time off of work and my class reunion doesn't fall on this weekend, I might come up for this. I'll see if I can rouse interest from fellow Missourians.
EDIT: We're actually looking to host a mirror in Missouri, so I won't be coming to this, most likely.

I would like to play this tournament. Teammates would be nice.
I will probably play or staff all side events that are attached to this weekend, too.

Re: VCU Open at Michigan - August 8
Would it be worthwhile to poll or consensus as to what side events we'd like to see here? I'd wager there is probably more interest in VICO here than the main site, and I'm perfectly willing to defer Tricon at our site. On the other hand, I'm not sure as to the interest in Science! either.

People who are planning on coming to this site, feel free to list your side event preferences here, and I'll come up with a schedule. I can say that since I personally want to play VICO very much, that's probably going to happen.

My ranking of side events:
1. Sheikh
2. We Have Never Been Modern
3. VICO
-------
4. Tricon
5. Science
Bar means ideally I'd like those three.

Well, the drive to Richmond is actually longer for me than the drive to Ann Arbor, so there's that. Also it looks like I have a good shot of playing the events I want to play in Ann Arbor.Cheynem wrote:Is this because of the death of VICO at the main site? Have we become the Brain Drain site? Rank-ordered:
1. Science

3. VICO
4. History
I'm probably only going to play only one side event on Sunday, so that I can hang out with my aunt in Novi. So that said, my preference is for Science on Saturday evening and Modern on Sunday morning.

Re: VCU Open at Michigan - August 8
I also still need a team for the main tournament. Surely my winning streak at this tournament must continue (?)
I'm open to not running Tricon at this because it seems like there is a lack of interest and in the tradition of Minnesota quizbowl, doing a post VCU Open event at Minnesota where those packets are played along with whatever else isn't played.
What do you guys think is the maximum events we can fit in? I'd rather avoid Friday night events if possible.

I am now the comically older fourth on the Kai/Alston/Adam team.

I'm probably going to this site unless I don't go to VCUO at all, so I am tentatively looking for a team.

Due to Kai Smith's HEINOUS BETRAYAL, there is now an open spot on our team.

Re: VCU Open at Michigan - August 8
Could we figure out a potential schedule for side events? Obviously format and schedule might be contingent on number of teams and players in attendance, but perhaps at least finalizing the what and when might be nice.

Re: VCU Open at Michigan - August 8
I propose the following schedule of side events:
Saturday evening: SHEIKH
Sunday: Science, VICO, We Have Never Been Modern
If there's time, we might be able to throw in some Tricon packets as well.

Sounds good--I assume format TBD based on number of people.

Provided I can get time off of work, I've decided to play this.

I'll probably be around for this - anybody out there looking to form another team?

I'd sure love to play this, as well as any and all side events. If some wind up being played on somebody's floor at 2 A.M. Monday, that's cool with me, too. I suppose that means I'm looking for a team or teammates!

I may be moving to Vermont later than originally planned, in which case I want to play this. I should know for sure in a few days.
