We will probably have 1+ teams from WUSTL at this.

We aren't going to add any more teams at this point, but you guys are free to join up with other teams. Let me know how many people you actually have so I can see if we should make 4 player teams. (Or we can change the schedule, if someone has a good suggestion about how to do that within the constraints of 4 editors and 5 submitted packets).

Sorry for changing the numbers up-- I didn't really expect a lot of interest in this.

14 teams, 2 groups of 7... then a number of crossovers depending on packets. I think this is how the 2014 ICT science side event was done.

Best idea I can come up with for more teams with still 9 packets would be a 14-team tournament: 2x7 prelims, and then two-round brackets (A1-B2, A2-B1, 1st & 3rd games; A3-B4, A4-B3, 5th & 7th games; A5-B6, A6-B5, 9th & 11th games; A7-B7). This gets everyone 7 or 8 games. Yes, it's a single-elim playoff, but trying to work an advantage final system in a side event with 9 rounds seems like a less good format.

I don't see a superteam here.

Brian this is getting ridiculous, I hope you charge an exorbitant fee for assholes who are trying to freeload off of your tournament by signing up the last minute and not writing a packet. I'm probably going to post about this later, but everything about this model -- not really your tournament in specific, just packet submissions side tournaments like this -- is just terrible. This tournament probably couldn't happen without writers, and I think it would be just nice to punish everyone by forcing them to write things / pay you a fee.

Well, I'm pretty sure we are paying a fee as it costs money to play the tournament. I don't get the dogmatic stance here--Brian's a big boy, if he didn't want people playing without writing a packet, he would have made that a requirement. I'm obviously open to teams who didn't write packets paying a little more ($10 per person?). I certainly wasn't trying to freeload of of Brian's hard work, and it's really up to him to decide who plays his set and for how much.

EDIT: I am playing with Ashvin and Victor (and am co-writing a packet too).

As long as you allow science-less riffraff for competition and keep out the people who actually know science, it's fine by me! Makes it easier to claim the science throne.

Seriously though, as Mike said, it's Brian's thing, not yours. He can do whatever he wants with it. And as Eric said, people should just be responsible about their writing priorities.
Cheynem wrote:EDIT: I am playing with Ashvin and Victor (and am co-writing a half-packet too).
Full disclosure. I'm not going to stop at 12, I'm just going to write as many as I have time for, since I think Brian's going to have his hands full in the final week of editing. If this event turns out to be largely lulzy, then, whatever, big deal. I'm expecting a super submission-driven set anyway. I'm just hoping that at least half of the teams stuck to
Brian McPeak wrote:The average difficulty should be a little lower than nationals but this is a side event-- a few CO/CO+ things are probably okay if they're really cool and you can't write on that any other way but balance them out with more good questions with easy answers.
I didn't write lulzy questions for this, so you can enjoy my packet (perhaps not so much for Ike, since I stuck to my biochemistry side of the science distribution).

What's the per-20 distribution of each packet, i.e. for which categories will there be fewer questions than in the submission distro?

18 tossups on earth science without repeats seems... improbable.

I count more than 18 named time divisions on the Geologic time scale Wikipedia page. Seriously though, there are plenty of topics, especially if people get creative with their answer lines. So many subfields to cover too: Mineralogy, Petrology, Glaciology, Oceanography, Meteorology, Vulcanology, Geology... Just a couple from each of those and you can pretty easily not repeat clues or answerlines.

Further, VCU Open 2015 had 6/6 Earth Science with no repeats, just split among the fields of "geology / geophysics", "atmospheric", "ocean / coastal", "environmental", and "any". You could probably write 10+ non-repeating tossups just in "geology / geophysics". :)

Right now I have 2 Michigan rooms so and 1 Maryland room, so if two more people could let us use their room that would be great. For readers we have Will N, Jacob R, and me, so we need two more of those. If you're willing to read, scorekeep, or let us use your room, post here or tell me tomorrow.

We're going to start tomorrow right after the tournament. I guess there's some award ceremony so as soon as that's over we'll meet in the lobby, I'll tell you your schedule and I'll assign remaining free agents to teams, and then we'll go.
