VCU Open ‘15 @ VCU (8/8/15)
VCU Open ‘15 @ VCU (8/8/15)
This is the general announcement for the main site of VCU Open 2015, to be hosted at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, August 8th, 2015 from 8:30 AM to about 5:30 PM. More information about VCUO ‘15 can be viewed at the original announcement for the tournament.
Location, directions & parking:
The tournament will likely take place in Grace E. Harris Hall, located at the intersection of Main Street and Harrison Street, in Richmond, Virginia. One will want to park either on the street, or in the West Main Street Parking Deck, which has entrances on Cherry Street and Laurel Street and is nominally located at 801 W Main St. A campus map is accessible here.
The opening meeting will occur in Harris 2117.
Eligibility:
As the name of the tournament implies, this tournament is open to all players. There are no eligibility restrictions.
Registration & fees:
base fee: $120 / team
staffer discount: -$10
The minimum fee is $40 / team. There is no discount for shorthanded teams.
We would appreciate a couple of people bringing buzzers in case of emergency—a discount of $5 will be arranged if you e-mail me and I think we need your buzzer.
To register, you must e-mail me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you intend to bring, an email address where you can be contacted with details, and a mobile phone number in case I need to contact you the morning of the tournament. Feel free to share this announcement with any person that you think would be interested in attending.
Method of payment:
All players must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. Players who do not pay by the day of the tournament will be charged a $10 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount.
We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. Bringing forms of payment outside of the three listed will be considered nonpayment and subject you to the $25 late payment penalty.
All checks must be made out to "Quizbowl at VCU." If you bring a check not made out to "Quizbowl at VCU" and have no other method of paying for the tournament, you will be subject to the $10 late payment penalty.
Team & roster size:
There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc.
Food:
Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. We will provide a list of suggested eateries for the lunch break, which will be some time after 12 PM.

A bunch of people put down names on the unofficial spreadsheet from the main thread, but it looks like only one team has actually registered so far. Are (other) people still coming to this?

Sorry I'm posting about this so late, but I just read it. Is this just a list of what is being played what day, or is it actually the order? If the latter, what the fuck? Is demand for a stupid novelty event that's being repeated one time too many that much higher than for actual history/science side events that it's getting the best (from a easiest-to-arrange-travel to deal with perspective) slot on Sunday? Is my disdain for a mix of mediocre questions and unending Community/Seinfeld monstrosity packets weirdly not shared by anyone else in quizbowl? I know I'd much rather play actual events during the few hours travel arrangements will permit me to be there Sunday, but I suppose I could be in the minority.Cody wrote:Side Event Information

I will fourth Max's opinion. I'd much rather that strong fields get to play SHEIKH and AVOGADRO'S NUMBER early in the day if people will have to travel back home; on the assumption that Tricon (what exists of it) will be read no matter what my views on it are, I'd advocate for it being last in the day.
I also hope more people sign up for this tournament soon! The field list is quite small still.

Re: VCU Open ‘15 @ VCU (8/8/15)
Might that have something to do with the rather strange way side events have been handled for this site, given that it's supposed to be a summer open? It seems to me like that drove almost everyone who travels for VCU Open to Michigan, but last time I made a comment about demand elasticity in the context of tournament attendance, it was apparently a controversial statement.Matthew J wrote:I also hope more people sign up for this tournament soon! I think there was a poll about who wanted to play what side events set up. There is only one packet written for it right now, as I pointed out in the other thread.

I'd attribute much more of it to quizbowl people just being slow to register for things if not constantly prodded -- the Michigan site is also quite small at present.Tees-Exe Line wrote:Might that have something to do with the rather strange way side events have been handled for this site, given that it's supposed to be a summer open? The Michigan site is basically at the same size it was last year (larger, probably, if one considers the appearance of full teams).

So, the science tournament has been postponed and the last three rounds of CO are apparently available for in-person readings. What effects will that have on the proposed schedule of side events?

Since I can't make it out to this site for medical reasons, I would love for somebody to record the games of SHEIKH in their room so I can hear how the set Jordan and I have worked on plays out. I don't mind if it's audio or video - either works for me.

I recommend playing SHEIKH in doubles, but feel free to use whatever format you like.
For the record, I can confirm that SHEIKH will have ten packets (eight normal rounds plus two marked "finals")

Is there any interest in playing the three remaining CO packets at this site, like what Jerry is running in Michigan? I just found out that I'll be able to come to VCU, and I'd like to read them, either in some sort of draft format or just to interested players.

The Sunday order of events is Tricon / SHEIKH / VICO, as posted here and in the main thread.
VICO and We Have Never Been Modern will be doubles unless player interest out paces staff interest; this seems likely to be the case for SHEIKH given the poll results, so we'll do SHEIKH as triples to start.

Will the spreadsheet be updated to reflect VICO's slotting in for AVOGADRO?

Done; thank you for the reminder.vinteuil wrote:Will the spreadsheet be updated to reflect VICO's slotting in for AVOGADRO?
On that note: please start using the VCU tab on the official-for-side-events spreadsheet to form teams / register for side events this upcoming weekend; ditto for people who are willing to staff. VCU will provide scoresheets for side events if their authors would like—simply let me know (and let me know if there are any unusual requirements, like tossup only).
It's been suggested that it would be interesting to run this tournament with bouncebacks. Is this something people are interested in? Please respond using this simple form. If something like 60%+ of the field respond bouncebacks or no preference, we'll go with them. E-mail is required as a rudimentary check against hokey responses; if it doesn't accept your e-mail, you can send in a vote to [email protected]

Re: VCU Open ‘15 @ VCU (8/8/15)
I've also updated the VCU tab on the unofficial spreadsheet to include all the currently registered teams and their members; if you're a free agent interested in playing the tournament, get in touch with me and I can provide contact information for teams lacking a full roster.

Re: VCU Open ‘15 @ VCU (8/8/15)
I just found out that I may be able to play this tournament depending on what my doctors say about my condition on Friday (I can't give any certain indication at all before then, which I know is really inconvenient - my apologies). I've spoken to Daniel Hothem about playing on his team, but if someone else joins with them before Friday, I'm looking for a team to play on and teammates to play with. I'd strongly prefer to play with people who know different things than me, but I'd be down to play with most people.

How many staffers do we have? At the moment, we only have enough players listed on the spreadsheet for 7 teams; is there any reason not to form doubles first and then switch things up later considering the number of people signed up less than a week before the tournament?Cody wrote:VICO and We Have Never Been Modern will be doubles unless player interest out paces staff interest; this seems likely to be the case for SHEIKH given the poll results, so we'll do SHEIKH as triples to start.

I don't know how much staff we have yet, so that complicates planning things. If I'm recalling correctly, SHEIKH received by far the most points in my potential side event poll, so I'm worried that it'll be hard to grab staff for a side event with the broad appeal that SHEIKH has. (Plus, I don't think people have been really using the side event stuff -- I'm pretty sure Dan Puma is not coming to VCUO, for instance).

Re: VCU Open ‘15 @ VCU (8/8/15)
A brief update: schedule. There are a several options for 10 teams that maximize the number of packets heard. Barring any strenuous objections, the one I am planning to use is as follows:
Prelims:
10 team RR (9 games, 9 rounds); rank 1-10 by W-L then PPG.
Playoffs:
Teams 7-10 play a 4 team RR (3 games, 3 rounds => 12 games, 12 rounds).
Form brackets "A" and "B"; "A" has teams 1,3,6 and "B" has teams 2,4,5. Everyone in "A" plays everyone in "B" (and vice versa) (3 games, 3 rounds => 12 games, 12 rounds). Rank "A" and "B" 1-3 by W-L then PPG (W-L and PPG for the whole day—all morning games count!).
Playoffs II: The Secret of the Ectocooler
A1 plays B1 in a best-of-3 (2-3 games in 2-3 rounds => 14-15 games in 14-15 rounds); A2 plays B2 and A3 plays B3 in 1 game for placement (1 game in 1 round => 13 games, 13 rounds).
Admittedly, there are some scenarios where this schedule could play unfairly (if the #3 seed after the prelims is tied for 1st (or 2nd if #1 is 8-1 and #2 and #3 are 7-2) and then wins all their afternoon games, they can miss the finals series based solely on PPG..or the #1 seed can miss the finals solely on PPG if they were 8-1 lose to the #2 seed in the playoffs, the #2 and #3 seeds were 7-2 out of prelims, and the #3 seed wins all their afternoon games and has a greater PPG). On balance, considering the field, I don't think these scenarios are a great danger to the schedule, but if you think otherwise, do e-mail/post/PM me.
Edit: updated the above with W-L records for clarity. Basically, none of the above is a problem if the #1 team goes 9-0.
Prelims:
10 team RR (9 games, 9 rounds); rank 1-10 by W-L then PPG.
Playoffs:
Teams 7-10 play a 4 team RR (3 games, 3 rounds => 12 games, 12 rounds).
A1 plays B1 in a best-of-3 (2-3 games in 2-3 rounds => 14-15 games in 14-15 rounds); A2 plays B2 and A3 plays B3 in 1 game for placement (1 game in 1 round => 13 games, 13 rounds).

Can you tell me what time Saturday is expected to end? I have to take a Megabus back to DC.

I'd say it's unlikely to run later than 6 PM for the majority of teams, and possibly faster given our good corp of readers.i never see pigeons in wheeling wrote:Can you tell me what time Saturday is expected to end? I have to take a Megabus back to DC.

Just to note for scheduling purposes, there are currently six packets for Tricon. I have no idea if there are more coming. I should note that if people at this site want to play this event, they might consider writing more packets, as very few people from this site have written any (note: not necessarily a complaint, just an observation).

Logistics E-mail wrote:The tournament will take place in Grace E.
Registration will run from 8:20 to 8:45 AM in room 2115 (second floor; if entering across from the Commons, take the stairs up and go left. It's the last room on the right before the T intersection). After a short opening meeting, games will start ASAP, so if you are not in attendance by 8:45 AM, you risk forfeiting your first game.
If you are running late, you should call me at {redacted, PM me for my #}. There is a 0% chance that the start of the tournament will be delayed if I haven't heard from you and don't know when you'll arrive.

Also, as a reminder, please do vote in the referenced poll on bouncebacks. I hope to make a decision tomorrow, at latest, and I need some more input to do so.
Cody wrote:It's been suggested that it would be interesting to run this tournament with bouncebacks. Is this something people are interested in? Please respond using this simple form. If something like 60%+ of the field respond bouncebacks or no preference, we'll go with them. E-mail is required as a rudimentary check against hokey responses; if it doesn't accept your e-mail, you can send in a vote to [email protected]

I'll be interested to hear the results of the vote for this main iteration of the tournament. Casually discussing it with some Valencia and UCF players at practice today, there was unanimous excitement about using bouncebacks for our mirror on August 22. But it prompted a question (and sorry if this is a derail): it's easy to mark the bouncebacks on the score sheets, but what effect does this have on entry of stats into SQBS? And of course it will change the way we read the stats on bonus conversion. Maybe this doesn't matter, but I was curious.

Presumably you'd do something like what is done at PACE.

I'm calling the poll on bouncebacks. 22 responses: 18 yes, 2 no preference, 2 no. While not the arbitrary 60% figure above, I think this shows a sufficient consensus that people prefer bouncebacks, so—bouncebacks it is!
Hastily written rules mostly stolen from Matt Jackson and Mike Sorice to account for bouncebacks. Subject to change before the tournament if any errors are discovered.

Additions to the rules to account for bouncebacks wrote:Definition: the controlling team is always the team that got the tossup and to whom the bonus is directed. The noncontrolling team is always the team that did not get the tossup and thus can only answer if controlling team is incorrect and the bonus part "bounces".
Timing: if the controlling team answers incorrectly, the moderator must verbally indicate that the question has bounced to the noncontrolling team, which then has 3 seconds to answer.
Separately, if the controlling team interrupts a bonus part while it is being read and directs an incorrect answer, the bonus part is re-read for the non-controlling team from the end of the last completed sentence [for clarity]; the non-controlling team then has 3 seconds to answer once the bonus is finished being read (there will be no verbal indication from the moderator in this case).
Messed up bouncebacks: If a moderator inadvertently reveals an answer after the controlling team has answered incorrectly, but before the noncontrolling team has had a chance to answer, at the end of the game, a new bonus is read in its entirety to the noncontrolling team on which they can score at most the number of points they missed out on due to moderator error. (this applies to all bonuses that have been messed up because PPG will matter for determining playoff placement and seeding). No matter where this occurs in the bonus, the moderator finishes the bonus as normal and marks it for later resolution.
In other [extremely rare] cases (for example, the moderator says the answer to the bonus before the controlling team has a chance to answer): "read the controlling team a new bonus on which nobody can get more or less than they'd otherwise get", i.e. exactly the rule for replacing non-bounceback bonuses. E.g. the controlling team gets the 1st part, the moderator screws up on the 2nd part. New bonus is read where the controlling team can get up to 30, noncontrolling team can get up to 20. another: controlling team and noncontrolling team miss the first part, moderator screws up on 2nd part. New bonus is read on which the controlling team can get up to 20 and the noncontrolling team can get up to 20. The bonus is played normally, so for example in the first case, if the controlling team misses all 3 parts and the noncontrolling team gets all 3 parts, the controlling team gets 10 and the noncontrolling team gets 20. Second case, if the controlling team 30s, they get 20 and the noncontrolling team gets 0.

As seems to be standard, Jordan and I will form arbitrary teams of free agents if they do not find themselves a team before SHEIKH. Format will depend on how many teams end up signing up - as is, we'll probably do a round robin, but alternative formats will be used in the event that more than eight teams sign up.
