"stanford housewrite" at Stanford (February 27, 2016)

Post by Galadedrid Damodred »

The main site of "stanford housewrite" will take place at Stanford University on February 27, 2016. Refer to this thread for information about the set. Register by posting in this thread or emailing me, Austin Brownlow (acb13 AT stanford DOT edu).

Cost
Base fee: $120
Minimum fee: $0
Working buzzer discount: $5 each
Travel discount: $15 per 150 miles one way (according to Google Maps)

Note that there is no moderator discount, because we will have plenty of readers and we want as many people to play this tournament as possible. Also, we have increased the travel discount for the benefit of teams who will be coming from SoCal and more distant locations.

Field (CLOSED as of 2/18)
Rob Carson/Andrew Hart/Jerry Vinokurov/Jay Bhasin
Mike Bentley/Daniel Hothem/Jeremy Eaton/Steven Canning
UCSD (2)
Berkeley (2)

Eyes that Do Not See (announcement) (staff list: Mike Bentley)
Austin Brownlow (I can drop out if it will free up a buzzer spot for someone else)
Stephen Liu
Daniel Hothem
Rob Carson
Andrew Hart
Jerry Vinokurov
Jason Cheng
PC Chauhan
Aseem Keyal

Christmas Present (announcement) (staff list: Nathan Weiser, Niki Peters)
Austin Brownlow & Benji Nguyen
Rob Carson & Andrew Hart
Jerry Vinokurov & Mike Bentley

Free agents: Kevin Deam, Stephen Liu

I'd like to have either 4 or 6 teams for this to avoid byes. Christmas Present will take place Saturday evening after Eyes.

Cottage Bowl (announcement) (staff list: Austin Brownlow)
Rob Carson & Andrew Hart
Steven Canning & Micah Hodosh
Nathan Weiser & Alex Freed

Free agents: Jerry Vinokurov, Ian Torres, Kyle Sutherlin, Stephen Liu

Again, 4 or 6 teams is the goal. Cottage Bowl will take place Sunday morning (9ish AM - 1ish PM) and will be tossup-only.

Berkeley will probably be hosting a high school tournament on March 5th, so we would likely prefer February 27th.

Ike and I are currently planning to attend, possibly with other Midwesterners. Are there any plans for Sunday events?

I'm not sure what side events will be floating around come late February, but I think it would be good to run a few on Sunday, especially if people are traveling long distances for this. Mike, is Eyes happening this year?

Austin knows a lot more about room availability.

There may be a non-negligible number of extra questions that don't make the final cut of the set, and I'm thinking of writing a packet or two of super-hard religion tossups, but I can't guarantee anything at this time. If and when side events materialize, we can definitely host them on Sunday, as long as I know far enough in advance to reserve the room(s). We'd certainly like to be able to offer people who choose to travel to Stanford more quizbowl for their dollar.

You guys should run one of the Canadian trash tournaments (Cottage Bowl 2, SOTV) on Sunday.

My proposal is that we run Eyes after the main event, then play either a full trash set or only the tossups of a trash set plus Will's side event on Sunday.

I'm in favor of not splitting up Eyes and just having a normal lunch, and not doing a full trash tournament because I'm guessing the Sunday field will probably be small so 4 player teams might not be feasible.

Can people who are traveling and interested in side events post their preferences for the schedule? As far as I know, the Stanford team doesn't really care what order things happen in.

The events will be Eyes, a trash set, and Will Alston's tournament.

If we can't come to a consensus, if everyone's schedules are flexible, or if no one cares enough to respond, we'll go with the schedule I proposed in my last post.

OK, here's the plan for side events. I'll keep track of the fields and staffers for these in the OP. Please PM or email me if you are willing to staff either or both of the Sunday side events.

Eyes: This will take place Saturday evening, immediately after the conclusion of "stanford housewrite". It will be played shootout-style.

Trash: This will take place Sunday morning. Unless anyone objects, we'll use Cottage Bowl because it has more packets. The trash tournament will have to be tossup-only because of time constraints on our room reservations. There will be a field cap of 8 four-person teams or 12 two-person teams, whichever people prefer. (We have 6 rooms reserved from 8 AM to 1 PM, but 2 of those are too small to fit 8 players and a moderator.)

Christmas Present (Will Alston's R/M/P/SS tournament): This will take place Sunday afternoon after the conclusion of the trash tournament and a lunch break. There will be a field cap of 6 two-person teams. I don't anticipate an excess of demand for this tournament, because it's rather difficult and in a niche area of the distribution, but you should register ASAP just in case.

Also, please note that we are capping the field at 8 teams for "stanford housewrite" due to room availability. Again, I don't anticipate this being a problem, but if you want to play, you should register sooner rather than later. *cough* Berkeley *cough*

We're playing Cottage Bowl and Christmas Present together. Depending on format, we may be seeking more Cottage Bowl teammates.

I'm closing the field at 6 because it doesn't look like there will be 2 more teams that register in the next few days (although you're welcome to prove me wrong!). I will send out a logistics email this Sunday. Side event registration is more flexible, but please try to let me know ahead of time instead of on the day of the tournament, because it will make it easier to arrange the schedules.

It's starting to look like maybe a shootout format would be best for all of the side events? I guess we could try to create a new, more interesting format, but at any rate it doesn't look like 4 or even 2 person teams will work.

I wouldn't mind trying to fit everything (except the trash tournament) into one night.

Eyes should be a shootout regardless. It's not a very fun team tournament.

Berkeley people: Are you guys not signed up for the Sunday events because you don't want to have to go back and forth two days in a row? If that's the case I think we probably can move Christmas Present to after Eyes, like Mike said. If there isn't additional interest, though, we should just budget more time for the main event. But I guess this could really be a gametime decision.

With 6 teams in the field, it's very likely that there will only be 10 or 11 rounds of the main tournament. So if we can start Round 1 at 9 AM, we should be able to finish around 5 PM, then run both Eyes and at least one of the other side events afterward, since it sounds like people don't mind being around until later in the evening. More people have expressed interest in Christmas Present than in Cottage Bowl (this includes people not listed in the OP who aren't able to play any side events on Sunday), so I'm leaning toward dropping the latter altogether unless there is a sudden swell of interest. If you have a dog in this fight, email me pronto.

Eyes is a pretty easy tournament to play while people are eating food. My suggestion is to order pizza for people who are playing it. Other people who want to play Christmas Present but don't want to play Eyes can grab their own dinner during this time.

I'd very much like to play Cottage Bowl and don't particularly care how casual the setting/format is, but obviously if few other people are interested you're not under any obligation to entertain me!

EDIT: well, to clarify, you kind of are--I'm flying out there with the expectation of playing something approaching a full weekend of events. That said, if there aren't enough people for any sort of real tournament format, I'm still perfectly happy hanging out and hearing the questions as a shootout or whatever.

Yeah what I meant was that it definitely won't be possible to do Cottage Bowl as a full tournament of 10+ packets on Saturday evening, so it's not going to happen as a normal team event. There's probably just enough time to run Christmas Present as a doubles tournament if we don't hold Cottage Bowl. However, given the current level of interest in both tournaments, I think the best thing to do is to hold them both in the form of shootouts. When enough people have to leave for the night, we'll stop (or at least stop the official event - the festivities don't have to end there!). We don't really have to decide anything in advance of Saturday evening, since there won't be any scheduling necessary. Don't forget that there will be some leftover rounds of "stanford housewrite" that can be read as shootouts as well. We will host as much quizbowl as people want to play.

For what it's worth, my preference would be to do Christmas Present as a doubles tournament and not a shoot-out (and not try to do COTTAGE Bowl on the same night). I suspect that there won't be any problem getting at least 4 doubles teams for Christmas Present. I doubt that if we tried to cram in both Christmas Present and COTTAGE Bowl as shoot-outs that we'd get through more than a couple of COTTAGE Bowl rounds before people lost interest, which effectively ruins the tournament to hear a couple of tossups after a long day. Plus, I find doubles tournaments a lot more interesting than shoot outs.

I agree with you 100%, both from the perspective of someone who personally wants to play Christmas Present and treat it as a serious event and someone who thinks that people will have a better experience playing actual tournaments. I'm trying to figure out a way to satisfy everyone, but I can't see how that is going to happen because there are people who want to play Cottage Bowl but won't be available on Sunday (and ditto for Christmas Present). I would rather sort this out democratically when everyone is in the same room, but I may have to put my foot down at some point and go with your suggestion (Christmas Present on Saturday evening, Cottage Bowl on Sunday) because it is not a good idea to prioritize trash questions over academic ones. Sorry if some of my posts have seemed wishy-washy on this subject; I'm doing my best to work out a resolution to this issue both as Austin the coldly logical TD and Austin the guy who doesn't want people to get angry at him for preventing them from playing more quizbowl.

I just sent out a logistics email to the contacts for all registered teams. I also decided to avoid any further confusion by finalizing the schedule as follows: "stanford housewrite", then Eyes, then Christmas Present on Saturday and Cottage Bowl on Sunday. Christmas Present and Cottage Bowl will both be run as full doubles tournaments. I'm very sorry to people who hoped to get the chance to play Cottage Bowl on Saturday because they won't be around on Sunday.
