NAQT Collegiate Novice at Penn State (January 16, 2016)

Post by Victor Prieto »

Penn State Quiz Bowl is happy to announce that we are hosting a mirror of NAQT Collegiate Novice series on January 16, 2016. I, Victor Prieto, will serve as tournament director. We will be using the IS-150C set. This tournament is intended for quizbowl teams with little or no experience. Correspondingly, a list of eligibility restrictions can be found below, mostly identical to VCU Novice's rules (with the exception that juniors and seniors are permitted if this is their first pyramidal quizbowl tournament ever). An opening meeting will take place at 8:45 am, with the first round starting immediately afterwards (probably 9:00 or 9:05).

Eligibility restrictions (strikethroughs and bold text indicate changes):

All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor the tournament director for special permission to play:

If you have already completed your second fourth year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits) and have never played in a pyramidal quizbowl tournament before. Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
If you have ever finished in the top 20 in scoring at PACE NSC or top 35 in scoring at NAQT HSNCT, or played on a team that finished in the top 16 at NSC or t-21 at HSNCT.
If you ever lead a team in scoring that made it beyond the first round of the HSNCT playoffs, or lead a team in scoring that made the top playoff bracket of NSC [the last two years, this has been the top 24 teams].
If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
If you have ever won any college tournament.

Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Entry Fees
I am happy to announce that because of a partial grant from Penn State, we will be charging a flat $16 per team (the exact mirror cost per team). We are aiming to break exactly even on this tournament. However, because of the nature of the grant, there will be no discounts, it'll just remain at a flat $16. We implore any who has staff or buzzers to bring them!

Logistics
Because we have no idea how this no discounts policy will turn out, we'll start at a soft cap of 8 teams. The link to register on the NAQT website can be found here. Full logistics will be emailed to registered teams closer to the tournament date.

We look forward to seeing many new college teams in Happy Valley!
