NAQT SCT at VCU (02/06/2016)

Post by Cody »

This is the general announcement for NAQT Sectionals at VCU, to be hosted at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 8:15 AM to about 5:00 PM. A full list of hosts can be viewed on NAQT's website.

Location, directions & parking:
The tournament will likely take place in Grace E. Harris Hall, located at the intersection of Main Street and Harrison Street, in Richmond, Virginia. One will want to park either on the street, or in the West Main Street Parking Deck, which has entrances on Cherry Street and Laurel Street and is nominally located at 801 W Main St. A campus map is accessible here.

The opening meeting will likely occur in Harris 101.

Eligibility:
Teams competing at NAQT SCT must conform to NAQT's collegiate eligibility rules. A team competing in DII must meet the requirements laid out here by NAQT. Teams not eligible to compete in DII must compete in DI. If you are registering a DI team, please clearly indicate which players and teams are undergraduate, as that will determine undergraduate scoring prizes, the undergraduate trophy, and the undergraduate bid for ICT.

Registration & fees:
base fee: $125 / team
multiple team discount: -$25 / team (for every team after the first)
new school discount: -$20 / team (has not attended an NAQT college tournament in the past two years)
buzzer discount: -$10
moderator discount: -$30
scorekeeper discount: -$10
clock discount: -$5

The minimum fee is $40 / team. Discounts for staffers may only be claimed if you are transporting and/or lodging the staffer in question (this includes external staffers recruited by me: if you transport them, you get the discount). The determination of moderator vs scorekeeper is ultimately at my discretion, though I will, of course, take into account what you think the staffer is capable of.

The only way to register for this tournament is via NAQT's website. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions, but I cannot take registrations via e-mail.

Method of payment:
All players must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. Unless cleared with me beforehand, teams that do not pay by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount.

We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. Bringing forms of payment outside of the three listed will be considered nonpayment and subject you to the $25 late payment penalty.

All checks must be made out to "Quizbowl at VCU." If you bring a check not made out to "Quizbowl at VCU" and have no other method of paying for the tournament, you will be subject to the $10 late payment penalty.

Team & roster size:
Up to four players on a team may play at one time. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game for teams composed of more than four players. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc.

Food:
Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. We will provide a list of suggested eateries for the lunch break, which will be some time after 12 PM.

Due to staffing and room considerations, I have temporarily closed the field. We may be able to support 1 more D1 team; spots have already been offered to a team. If this is not taken and you'd like to be in the running for them, e-mail me a registration and I will open the online registration for you. First come, first served.

(field above now updated to accord with online registrations)

Followup: NAQT's website contains a very useful waitlist option, which you should use instead of e-mailing me. Signup link: https://www.naqt.com/registration/waitl ... nt_id=6937

Followup deux: The spot is taken. If we get a little lucky with staffers, we can support one (1) more DI or DII team. And if any teams drop, you'll obviously make it into the field. So put any other registrations you have on the waitlist and I'll endeavor to make final determinations ASAP.

With 11 DI and 15 DII teams, we are at capacity. The schedule will a round robin in DI (10 games) and a 7/8 bracketed RR + 4/3(4) crossover in DII (10-11 games). It's possible teams will drop, and it's possible we can expand with the addition of a staffer, so keep adding yourself to the waitlist.

We've dropped a house team to give us some staff, so there's room for 1 more DI team. Put yourself on the waitlist.

We currently have 10 D1 and 14 D2 teams. D1 will be RR to 4/3/3 (all games count) and D2 will be a full RR. We will be aiming for 9 games before lunch (if that's before 1:30). Eat some breakfast!

Stats, minus the final game between Maryland and Penn.

http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /playoffs/

Short results:

Penn finished the prelims and playoffs at 11-1; Maryland finished at 10-2. Having lots their first 2 games to Penn, Maryland won 2 games in a row to come back and win D1.

Virginia B finished the prelims at 13-0; Gettysburg finished at 12-1. Virginia won the first game of the advantaged final to win D2.

Full stats will probably be up (and sent to NAQT) tomorrow, including fixing the PPB issue for Penn A in round 12.

This tournament ran very smoothly due entirely to the awesome staffers who came out for this tournament. A special thanks goes to Casey Bindas & Sarah Angelo from VCU, who dropped from playing the tournament when we needed staff at the last minute, and to those who came from far afield: Andrew Feist, Aaron Rosenberg, Dennis Loo, Matt Bollinger, Evan Adams, Chris Chiego, Mike Hundley, and, most especially, Jonathan Magin. Plus further thanks to George Berry and non-quizbowl-involved-people-who-showed-up-out-of-the-kindness-of-the-hearts Andrew Dydak and Colin Puckett. Y'all are the best.

Some stat errors have been fixed. Things are not up on HSQBDB yet, but NAQT has stats uploaded here.
