The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes (CO Sunday?)

This is an announcement for The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes, a visual film tournament, similar to TAMIL or SHAWARMA, except purely art film.

Since CO Trash is currently the only CO side event, I'm hoping to run this on Sunday after trash. It'll consist of 6 (or possibly more) 10-tossup rounds in the manner of Eyes That Do Not See, and will cost $5 per player.

This tournament will be rated PG-13 for mild nudity, language and violence.

I'd like to sign up for WANG, the visual porn event at this year's CO.

This tournament is basically finished; it has 8 packets of 10 tossups each. Each tossup is between 7 and 9 slides, with the vast majority being 7 slides. The tossups are meant to be accessible - the majority of answerlines could be regular difficulty tossups, and all but a small handful of answerlines are ones I would use at Nats level.

It doesn't look like there are other side events on the docket, so I guess I can go ahead and claim the post-Trash spot on Sunday. If you'd like to play, please express your interest in the thread, so I can get a sense of field size and pick a format.

I was thinking of just dividing people into n rooms, playing 4 rounds to seed into playoff rooms, and then playing 4 playoff rounds. Since I am unlikely to have a Blu-Ray player in my near future, the top 2 players by total points in the top room will receive pristine Criterion Blu-Rays (of Yi Yi and Blue Is the Warmest Color). I'm open to other sorts of formats, though.

This alone is enough to make me regret not coming to CO. (You know, not that I would be a top scorer anyway. And, I guess I could just buy a copy, but that's lame.)

To officially sign up for this tournament, please email me (my first initial and last name at umich dot edu) by July 15, so I can nail down the precise number of rooms. Also, it's possible I'll need one or two more staffers, so if you're sticking around after trash and willing to staff, let me know.

There are currently 14 people signed up, so we'll do a simple 2-room format. 16 would be an ideal number, so it would be great if two more people signed up.

We're at 16 now - I won't formally close the field, but I will say that 18 and 20 are much better numbers than 17 and 19.

Due to a glut of last-minute adds, I ended up adding a third room. Yogesh Raut, unsurprisingly, emerged victorious. Thanks to everyone who stayed to play!

Here is a link to the set (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6XlU ... TlqZWVTZHc) and the answer key (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6XlU ... FVIakNiaDA). The set's clear, so any comments are welcome.

This was a lot of fun and it was cool to see well constructed questions as well as neat to see what everyone else knew.

Thanks to Will for the great set and congrats to Yogesh. I hope this can become a continuing series like Eyes that Do Not See.

My only complaint would be that I think the # of players in each room should have been smaller.

I have the stats for the bottom 2 rooms, but I seem to have misplaced the stats disk for the top room (oof). The top three finishers in the top room were Yogesh, Andrew Yim, then Ian Greig, but I don't have the rest of the order.

Stats for room 2:

John Lawrence 100
Chris Borglum 85
Auroni Gupta 40
Mike Sorice 35
Evan Adams 30
Rein Otsason 20
Saul Hankin 10
Naveed Chowdhury 5
Brian McPeak 5
Chris Vicich 0

Stats for room 3:

Charles Wang 80
Cody Voight 75
Tejas Raje 50
Kai Smith 45
Christine Irwin 25
Matt Laird 20
Alex Jacob 20
Foster Hughes 0
Aaron Dos Remedios 0

If I remember right, the order in the top room was

1. Yogesh
2. Andrew
3. Ian
4. Matt Lafer
5. Trevor Davis (these could be switched)
6. and 7. TIE between Mike Cheyne and Tommy Casalaspi
8. and 9. TIE between Sam Bailey and Richard Yu
