Geography Monstrosity VIII — May 27, Dallas
Geography Monstrosity VIII — May 27, Dallas
The all-geography HSNCT side event will be returning for an eighth consecutive year, in its usual timeslot (10 p.m. to midnight, Friday, May 27, after the conclusion of HSNCT scrimmages). I will be organizing this year's iteration of GM, as Jeff Hoppes is occupied with HSNCT prep.
1) Packet submission is optional (but encouraged). Please let me know if you would like to write questions for this event (partial packets and even isolated questions are OK). Please submit all questions to me by 5 p.m. EST on Thursday so I have time to edit and power-mark them and compile the packets. Contact me at g.brisontrezise at gmail.
2) This year's edition of GM will again feature bonuses; each packet will be 10/10.
Distribution:
2/2 North America
1/1 Latin America and the Caribbean
2/2 Europe
1/1 Asia
1/1 Africa
3/3 your choice (including: Australia/Oceania/Antarctica, minor islands, common links, fictional geography, exo- and astro-geography, and/or real social science that actual geographers study)
To sign up to play or staff, please add your name to this spreadsheet. Plan to meet at the Tower Mezzanine Prefunction — the scrimmage hub — at 10 p.m. Friday; we will finalize teams then.

Are high schools allowed to play this?

I wasn't invited to staff HSNCT so I won't be around but I'll try to write a packet!
edit: definitely not by 5pm tomorrow though

Whatever questions you can contribute tonight — or by midday tomorrow — would be most appreciated. Not counting your questions we'll probably have two packets of 10/10, which would, unfortunately, foreclose the possibility of doing a round robin with the teams that have signed up.Angry Babies in Love wrote:I wasn't invited to staff HSNCT so I won't be around but I'll try to write a packet!

Re: Geography Monstrosity VIII — May 27, Dallas
No worries; I know the announcement came at the last minute. However, I'm glad to say I received an additional packet (thanks, Vasa Clarke!), for a total of three. I'm planning on running the tourney as a four-team round robin. Free agents: join one of the four existing teams, or sign up to staff! We need another couple moderators, and scorekeeping help would be welcome, too. Those already on teams: thanks in advance for accepting some additional members.Angry Babies in Love wrote:

Joined the Hoppes squad. He had the other three slots blacked out but I couldn't in good conscience invade a high school team who doesn't even know me and play on their team. Jeff -- if you want to just play by yourself I'll start a fifth team.
Also, where will the rounds themselves be held?

I must warn you, Jeff is really really really good at geography. There's nothing wrong with being the fifth person on a team at geo monstrosity, I think - last year my team had something like 8 people on it!Beetle wrote:Joined the Hoppes squad. Right. Well, now I'm member 5 of quizbowl squad, if everyone's ok with that.Corry wrote:I must warn you, Jeff is really really really good at geography. Totally fine, and you should be prepared to end up with even more — you'll just have to share buzzerscwest123 wrote:Request for team "Titicacaians" to be allowed to have 6 members

It doesn't look like I can make it, sorry. :(
Re: Geography Monstrosity VIII — May 27, Dallas
After having been spared a face-off with Jeff Hoppes, Lincoln College D won Geography Monstrosity VIII Friday night — congrats! Thanks to everyone who contributed questions (Vasa Clarke, Raynell Cooper, Jeff, Larissa Kelly, and Corry Wang) and staffed (Stephen Eltinge, and two generous high school students whose names I didn't catch). Hope to see you in Atlanta next year for GM IX!
I'm happy to read the set on the IRC at some point, but have never used the IRC; anyone care to explain how it works?

Re: Geography Monstrosity VIII — May 27, Dallas
Any plans for this yet? The IRC is here; just copy-paste clues into the chat one-at-a-time, and wait around 5-10 seconds in between giving clues. Make sure to call on the first person to type "buzz"; if they type "wd" they withdraw and can buzz again later (generally).

Re: Geography Monstrosity VIII — May 27, Dallas
Thanks for the explainer, Kenji. I'll read this on the IRC at 11 p.m. ET tomorrow, Monday, June 27, after which I'll submit the set to the database. Hopefully that works for folks.Wynaut wrote:Any plans for this yet? The IRC is here; just copy-paste clues into the chat one-at-a-time, and wait around 5-10 seconds in between giving clues. Read this tonight. Thanks to all who played, and to Victor (Prieto, I'm assuming?) for demonstrating how to read on the IRC. Kenji took first with 140 points over three rounds, while Naveed Chowdhury, formerly of the University of Maryland, claimed second with 130 points.
