VETO 2016 @ University of Toronto (August 6th, 2016)

Post by Calculus? »

Hello, Canada (and surrounding area)!

Yes! It's that time of year again, and the University of Toronto Academic Trivia Club is pleased to announce that your favourite editing-, cost-, and worry-free tournament, VETO, will be happening on Saturday, August 6th at the University of Toronto. MEET AT 9:30 AM ON THE NORTHEAST PATIO OF SID SMITH. THIS WILL BE THE CONTROL ROOM. TOURNAMENT WILL START AT 10.

To register a team, please email me at meghan [DOT] torchia [AT] mail [DOT] utoronto [DOT] ca, with the name of your team and who's playing on it. VETO is, of course, completely open to all players and free to play. Details about packet submission, etc. will be coming later.

Please send your packets to both of these email addresses: joesu235 [at] gmail [dot] com AND tak_seorangpun [at] yahoo [dot ] com.

Field cap is currently 9 teams. THE FIELD IS NOW FULL.

Current field:

Aaron/Ian/Paul/Kira
Anti-Homophobia Task Force
Adam/Leslie/Brian/Christine
Anubhav/Jay/Peter/Jess
Jordan/Tim/Brendan/Jordan's Dad
The Army of Africa
Nick/Mike/Heather/Izzy
Dennis/Shelby/Rein/Faheem
Roman/Eric/Chris/Miran

There will also be some sort of beach and/or side event day happening on the Sunday following this, so if you're coming to town and are interested, you might want to plan for that.

Hope to see you all in August!

There is still plenty of room for teams at the Vancouver site.

Hello! As some of you may have heard, due to U of T room booking ~shenanigans~, VETO 2016 is going completely roomless. Please meet on the northeast patio of Sid Smith (on St. George Street, closest to Lash Miller, the building with the alchemical symbols on it). It will probably be fairly sunny/hot out so please wear sunscreen and bring water. There will probably be two indoor "rooms" and two outdoor "rooms", but we'll see. Only positive spins on this news will be accepted.

Imma bring a ragtag bunch of irregulars from Hamilton, some of whom may want to join a team. If there are any openings, or teams willing to take alternates, that'd be awesome. I mean, I don't mind having 7 people on my team, but that can get a bit unwieldy.

Here's your mandatory pre-tournament information:

Please meet on the southeast patio of Sid Smith (St. George Street, next to the building with the alchemical symbols on it) at 9:30 AM. The tournament will begin at 10. We'll be playing nine rounds and possibly a final. There are the usual lunch options around campus.

For those driving, please note that the Danforth between Broadview and Jones is closed for the entire weekend. For those taking transit, the subway will be closed between St. George and Union stations on Saturday.

See you all tomorrow morning!

Hi everyone!

Hope you all had a good time today. I know it was definitely not the smoothest tournament Toronto has run, but I enjoyed seeing you all and playing everyone's packets (and realizing how rusty I've gotten after a year of not playing), and I hope you all managed to have some fun while you were here. If you'd like copies of the set, you can probably ask Joe for it.

This is the first time we think someone's been injured by an actual quizbowl question. Here are the stats.

My two cents: I think fun stuff like MacVanity, VETO, Hybrid, etc deserve a shot in the Canadian circuit. However, 4 a year is probably too much.

Seven people showed up for VETO at UBC today, and we organized ourselves into three teams:
FARSIDE: Peter
Taming of the Sandshrew: Carlos, Hanson, Mike
Master and Charmander: Philip, Amy, Jo

This was the lowest turnout in 18 years of VETO in Vancouver. Also, every player was over the age of 30 and had at least 13 years of experience playing quizbowl.

This was an unusually laid-back tournament. We didn't start until after 11 a.m., and each round took us almost an hour, even though all games were in the same room.

We had planned to play a triple round-robin, but we were so slow that we stopped after the second round-robin.

The last game was a real nail-biter between Taming of the Sandshrew and FARSIDE, that was decided on the last bonus. When Taming of the Sandshrew answered the last tossup, it needed only 10 points on the bonus in order to beat FARSIDE, and hence win the tournament. However, Taming of the Sandshrew failed to get any points on that bonus, so FARSIDE won the game by 5 points, and the result of the tournament was a 3-way tie, which we all decided to interpret to mean that everyone won.
Every team beat every other team once, and lost to every other team once.

Stats are posted here:
http://caql.org/results/VETO2016_standings.html
In the Round Report, the number of the round on which the packet was played in Toronto is given, so that comparing stats from the two sites is easier.

Thanks to the teams playing in Toronto for making our tournament possible!

A musket was fired in the studio during an early game of the 1979 Reach nationals as part of an "interactive" history question. Coincidentally, the Newfoundland team only had 3 players for the rest of the tournament...

Something is wrong in the stats for the Round 9 game between Gravon Green's Pokemon and The Ego and It's Property: according to the Scoreboard, there were 21 tossups answered (and bonuses played) in that game. This was obviously not because of overtime (final score was 395-105), and overall Team Standings say that every team played 8 games and heard 160 tossups.
