Tournament by the Sea VI (Mar 14, 2009)

Post by CSQuizJags »

The Cedar Shoals HS Academic team will host Tournament by the Sea VI, Duke-ing it out in Athens, on March 14, 2009, in the CSHS Fine Arts Building, in Athens, Georgia. This is a trash (popular culture) tournament open to anyone from anywhere regardless of collegiate affiliation. While we are still in the talks with another tournament to mirror them for a few packets (EPIC in Minnesota), this is still a packet submission tournament. We are offering a very enticing fee system based on when you submit your packet:

If you hand in your packet BEFORE Jan 15th, your entry fee is $0

If your packet is in between Jan 15 and Jan 30, 2008: $30

If your packet is in between Jan 30 and Feb 15: $40

If your packet is in between Feb 16 and Feb 28: $50

If your packet is in between Mar 1 and Mar 7: $60 (this is also the minimum fee for claiming a packet (plus the no packet fee) as we'll have them by then IF we get to mirror EPIC)

If you packet is in between Mar 7 and Mar 10: $80

If your packet is in after Mar 11: $100

If you decide NOT to write a packet and claim one (if available), add $20 to your total (bminimum $60+$20).

We will also have Mark Franklin and his Time-Life Strife music round. (Hopefully, there will be no tornado warnings...)

If you are interested in attending and want more information, please feel free to contact the team at [email protected].

These are the requirements for the packets:

21 TUs and 23 bonuses (TU 21 should be a viable TU for use in a sudden death tiebreaker- in other words- very gettable.)

In terms of categories, we’ll use the suggested format by Trashmasters:

General distribution guidelines
3 - 4 Movies
3 - 4 TV
3 - 4 Sports
3 - 4 Music
[Note: for the four categories listed above, please make sure you have at least one pre-1990 and at least one post-2000 of each.]
1-3 each:
Consumerama, including food/beverages
Trashy "literature"
0-2 each:
Videogames & computer games
Other games
Trashy current events
Other computer stuff
Comics
Gadgets
Theatre / radio / other media
Road trip effluvium
Broadway
Anything else you think of is fine as long as there are no more than two questions per as-yet-unnamed category.

Sci-fi rule: As science fiction can transcend several of these categories, please limit 1 TU and 1 bonus to a science fiction related topic.

If you wish to make a TU/bonuses donation, let us know via the email above.

Here's the field thus far.

Nobody posted in over a month or more; it looks like there's just such a thread in the archives.

Putting an as yet to happen tournament in the archives makes absolutely no sense, regardless of no one posting in over month. Many people will often wait to just prior to an event to post, and will not likely find it in the archives.

Yeah, if it's not clear from the above, this was a mistake (on whose part I don't exactly know, but it doesn't matter much.) On behalf of the administration, we apologize.

It's not my tournament, so nobody owes me an apology. We may be interested in attending. I was just pointing out that fellow's comment made no sense to me, not really criticizing the people who run this board--unless that fellow is somebody who does.

Mods- Is it possible to chop off the non-tournament related stuff and keep the original post? It's ok if it cannot be done.

Also, I figured it was an error. Not mad, just humorously confused, as in "I *know* I posted this somewhere."

DeepSky- Where are you from? If interested, email us!

Anyone else in trash-land: While Ive emailed Eden Prairie about mirroring EPIC (and am awaiting a reply), we'll mirror anyone else, FWIW. Email us if you're interested.

To my knowledge, Eden Prairie is no longer running EPIC.

I think that the person you were trying to contact has effectively retired from anything related to writing questions. As Rob said, the EPIC trash tournament has indeed been canceled, and is being replaced by an academic tournament.

Even though people have already been discussing it on the board? That seems like...not such a great idea.

They have questions they never used and will change things up a bit for us to combat that. Besides, most of the people who will come and play our tournament don't really read the trash boards that much, so we should be safe.

Well that's an assumption you should never, ever, ever make. But hey, it's your tournament.

Like he said, I will make sure that the few answers mentioned on the board (which have been edited out of posts now anyway) are replaced. That said, I'm not going to argue against your playing it at your site since you need questions, as long as you're willing to take the risks associated with holding a tournament a month and a half after it's been played at 3 other sites. I don't see any real issue here, but I'd like to know soon when you know for sure and not find out two days before the tournament that you got questions from somewhere else.

Yes- no more packet submission.
And we're taking the PB questions. If this blows up, it's on us. We've mirrored tournaments before two months after the fact with no issues. Thanks for your help and understanding.
