MUT Central Canada at Guelph (03/13/10)

Post by Tom007 »

The University of Guelph is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a mirror of the University of Minnesota's Undergraduate Tournament (MUT) on March 13, 2010. We are excited about the prospect of hosting a spring novice tournament, and hope to make this an annual tradition for the region of Central Canada.

Location
The tournament will take place in the MacKinnon Building at the University of Guelph campus in Guelph, ON. All games will take place on the second floor, however we are asking teams to please meet in Room 117 of MacKinnon when you arrive on campus.

Questions
This is a packet submission tournament of novice difficulty (similar in difficulty to other recent novice tournaments) edited by members of the University of Minnesota Quizbowl. Teams attending this mirror are not required to write a packet, but certainly may and are encouraged to do so for discounts outlined below. If you are interested in writing a packet, please refer to the packet submission information outlined in this post. Participating teams are encouraged to refer to last year's edition of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament for difficulty, which can be found here on Christian Carter's packet archive.

Side Events
We'll be hosting Will Nediger's Mildly Experimental Literature Doubles (MELD) tournament as a side event to MUT.We hope that MELD, which will surely be awesome, will entice some of the graduate students who are ineligible to play MUT to come to Guelph, and will serve as reward enough for the older players who are driving their younger teammates to this tournament.

Eligibility
Only undergraduate (and high school) students can play this tournament. If you are a grad student, you cannot play this event. Teams of high school students certainly may participate in this tournament, for significant discounts, and are urged to do so if they are interested in participating in a well-written tournament of this difficulty level.

Pricing
$100: Base fee
-$50: Packet submitted by Saturday, January 9th, 2010
-$25: Packet submitted by Saturday, January 23th, 2010
-$20: Packet submitted by Sunday, February 7th, 2010
-$15 per competent moderator
-$10 per 200 miles traveled
-$5 per working buzzer system with eight lights
-$40 per team of high school students
Minimum fee: $50

If you are a solo team or are a small team paying out of pocket, we are certainly willing to negotiate additional discounts. If you wish to pay by cheque, it may be made out to University of Guelph Quizbowl.

Registration
To register, please contact Tom Minard at tminard AT uoguelph DOT ca, being sure to include the number of teams and buzzer systems you will be bringing.

I just noticed that the date is not what I told the rest of my club last week (oops!), but I will be coming as a moderator and I will still probably have a team and buzzer set in tow.

We'll probably be at this with 2 - 3 teams, and 3 buzzers. Will email when we get a clearer idea of who's coming.

It still looks like one team from Ottawa, one moderator (me), and one buzzer. Aaron, Brendan, and I will likely attend the literature tournament.

Waterloo will have at least one team for this. I'll confirm exact numbers once I know more.

So yeah, it looks like just the one team from Waterloo. We'll also have one set of buzzers and one moderator.

A full-packet tiebreaker yielded a 230-225 decision in favour of Michigan B. The playoffs will be round robins within two brackets of 4.

Good job overall by Guelph for hosting. There was a team that dropped out at the last minute and they fixed the problem in a timely manner.

Congratulations to Michigan A, for finishing first, with an impressive 10-0 record. Congratulations also go out to Toronto A for finishing in a very close second place, and to top scorer Eric Monkman of Waterloo for his 79.29 points per game.

Full stats (including playoffs) can be found here: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings

Will Nediger's Mildly Experimental Literature Doubles event was run as a side tournament to this event and was a resounding success. Bravo to Kurtis and Phil of the University of Michigan for their victory, in what was a very enjoyable event.

Special thanks to all of the staff, including Andy Saunders, Ben Smith, Aaron Dos Remedios, Neil Walford, Laura Harper, George Hutchinson, Nasim Omar, and statskeeper extraordinaire, Chris Greenwood. Thanks to all of the editors at the University of Minnesota for putting together a pack of enjoyable questions. I hope everyone had a good time, and that we'll see all of you at future events hosted by the University of Guelph.

Final standings:

Upper Bracket
1. Michigan A (10-0)
2. Toronto A (8-2)
3. Waterloo (5-5)
4. Michigan B (4-6)

Lower Bracket
5. McMaster (5-5)
6. Ottawa (4-6)
7. Toronto B (4-6)
8. Michigan C (0-10)

They certainly will. The scoresheets aren't in SQBS, so I'll be doing that as soon as I get back from class this evening. Sorry about the delay!

So, my old Toshiba is giving me sass, and I don't have SQBS on my Macbook. This may have to wait until practice tomorrow afternoon to get done. Sorry!
