Gladiator Open, 11-5-16 in Wisconsin [MS-19]

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear coaches, players, and all y'all:

St. Mary's Visitation is honored to invite you to our sixth annual fall open, Gladiator Fall Tournament 2016, which will run on Saturday, November 5, 2016 in beautiful Elm Grove, WI. This is an open junior high (up to grade 8) quiz bowl tournament to be played on NAQT'S MS-19 question set, and it is a qualifier for MSNCT 2017.

Teams should expect about 8 rounds of pyramidal tossups and three-part bonuses played according to NAQT rules (with the exception that rounds will be untimed and consist of two ten-tossup halves with bonuses). This means that teams will be allowed four players at a time (plus substitutes) and bonuses will not bounce back.

The entry fee remains $65 per team, with a $5 discount for each buzzer system you bring and a $10 discount for your 2nd and subsequent team.

Please arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 AM. A brief rules meeting will take place at 8:30, and play will begin at 8:45. We will take a lunch break after about five rounds, during which you can go out to one of the many local restaurants or bring your own lunch and eat in our cafeteria.

SMV is easy to reach from I-94, I-43, and I-41. It is 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee and 90 minutes from the Chicago Loop. To reserve a spot (or spots), please email at mfalk at stmaryeg dot org. I am preliminarily capping registration at 16 teams.

My co-coaches help with the tournament, of course, but also with so many other things: Burke Seeberg and Kylie Daemmrich. I want to specially thank Jeff Price today, who coached his teams but also entered stats during several different rounds so we would have reports available when we needed them. Thanks, coaches, for bringing your teams to Elm Grove today. See you in the spring for Gladiator Open!

As always, my kids enjoyed the tournament. It was a nice, first experience for all of my young players (12 playing their first ever real matches), even if the all-rookie teams couldn't find a win, other than against each other!
