2019 Charter Challenge (MS-30, 3/9/19) at Wilmington Charter

Post by elyne road »

The Charter School of Wilmington is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2019 Charter Challenge Quizbowl Tournament on March, 9th, 2019. This tournament will be open to all middle schools, with a focus on teams from the state of Delaware.

LOCATION: This tournament will take place at the Charter School of Wilmington, located at 100 N Dupont Road, Wilmington, DE, 19807. Our building has three schools, and this tournament will take place almost entirely on the top floor.

LOGISTICS: We will begin registration at 8:00 AM, with a brief opening meeting around 8:45 AM. Games will begin at 9:00 AM. We will convene for lunch around 11:30 AM. Expect the tournament to finish no later than 5:00 PM.

BRACKETING: We are capable of hosting 48 teams at maximum, and we will have two divisions: Experienced and Novice. We will organize preliminary games in brackets of 6, and then re-bracket for the afternoon, also in brackets of 6. This guarantees that each team plays a minimum of 10 games. At lunch, we will recognize the top scorers from each division, and the top new players, if not already recognized. Assuming an even split of 24 teams per division, the top 30% of the field in the experienced division will qualify for the 2019 NAQT MSNCT.

QUESTION SET AND RULES: This tournament will use an NAQT MS set, specifically MS-30. This is a regular-difficulty middle school set, and we will not be reading computational math tossups or bonuses. We will use 5-second timing, so players have 5 seconds to give their answers on tossups, teams have 5 seconds to give an answer to each bonus part, and the moderator will count to 5 before a tossup goes dead.

FOOD: We will be selling pizzas and other concessions at lunch. If you wish to order pizza, please answer the corresponding question in the registration form. We will do our best to accommodate for dietary restrictions and allergies.

REGISTRATION: Please use this form to register. If you have any updates to your registration, please email [email protected], or [email protected].

FEES AND DISCOUNTS: The fees for the tournament will be as follows
  • $75 for a school’s first team
  • $65 for subsequent teams
  • $45 for teams new to Quizbowl*
  • $45 minimum fee for experienced teams, $25 minimum fee for new teams
*Teams eligible for this discount must not have played at a tournament in the past 2 school years.

We offer the following discounts:
  • -$5 for each functional buzzer system (capable of accommodating 8 players at once)
  • -$10 for each staffer
  • -$10 per 150 miles traveled (as calculated via Google Maps)
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at [email protected]. We hope to see you at the 2019 Charter Challenge!

We are looking to reach 16 teams in the Experienced Division, and 10 teams in the Novice division to ensure that the schedule has no byes. For each new team that signs up, we will offer the new team base price of $45 a team, regardless of whether the school is new to Quizbowl or not.

Congratulations to Cooper A who cleared the field to win in the experienced division! Based on the afternoon playoff records, Independence A placed 2nd and Norfolk Academic Guild A placed 3rd.

In the Novice Division, Independence D went undefeated to place first, while All Saints B claimed 2nd place by winning against Providence Creek Academy, who claimed 3rd place in their first ever Quizbowl tournament!

Special thanks to Jackie W., Ashish K., Patrick M., Abbi S., Grace K., Christina K., Ean C. and Adam D., as well as Charter's NHS members, who volunteered to moderate for us today!

Full stats for this tournament can be found here. We thank you all for coming, and we hope to see you at next year's iteration!
