Possible Date for Tarheel Cup

Post by UNC_CH_QUIZ_BOWL »

Hey this is Gatphan Atassi from the UNC Quiz Bowl team. I'm trying to see if how many High schools would be interested if we hosted a NAQT Tournament (Tarheel Cup) on Nov 11? Here is a doodle poll: https://doodle.com/poll/sdhrtetfharrrvyt
This is not an application or RSVP, this is just a testing of the waters.

This is to announce the Bonfire of the Manatees on October 21, 2017

Raleigh Charter High is pleased to announce that we will host the 9th annual Bonfire of the Manatees on Saturday, October 21, 2017. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., though we may well finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend.

Affiliation: The tournament will use NAQT set IS-170 and will serve as a qualifier for the NAQT national tournament with the top 15% of teams getting bids. It also is a platinum qualifier for PACE’s national tournament with the top 25% of teams getting invitations for their national tournament.

Purchasing Question Sets: If you would like to purchase the questions, please let me know ahead of time. The cost is $10 per set.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired for the first six rounds using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at [email protected] the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $70, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers.

Teams may purchase copies of the tournament questions for $10. Please let me know ahead of time so I can make copies for your school.

Payment may be mailed either prior to October 21, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the Bonfire at the Manatees!

Hello, fellow Quiz Bowlers! NCSSM will be hosting the second annual Grapes of Smath tournament on Saturday, December 16, using the Harvard HFT XII question set. (N.B. This is the same question set that will be used at the Virginia Tech Winter tournament on December 2nd.) The top teams will qualify for PACE nationals (to be confirmed this week). Standard NAQT quiz bowl rules (https://www.naqt.com/rules.html) apply to this tournament.

The cost of the tournament will be $60 per team, with a $10 reduction for each functional standard quiz bowl-acceptable buzzer set (up to one per team you're bringing) on a first-come, first-serve basis. We have capacity for 20 teams at our tournament.

To register, please contact Stephen Schmidt at [email protected] before midnight on December 14. For payment, please bring either cash or a check made out to NCSSM-SCSSI to the tournament.

Check-in will begin in Watts lobby of NCSSM (which can be accessed at 1219 Broad Street, Durham, NC 27705) at 8:25 am, and the tournament will begin promptly at 9:00 am. The tournament should be over by around 5:30 pm, with an hour between the morning and afternoon rounds for lunch. Lunch and breakfast will not be provided, and more information about local food options will be given prior to and at the tournament. Parking can be found in the main parking lot on West Club Boulevard.

Thank you, and we hope to see you at our tournament!
