I need a movie!

Post by ewalker »

My team is celebrating the opening of our season with a pizza party of sorts. We will be doing a lot of monotonous logistics things too and I was thinking they could do these tasks while watching a movie and the whole party would be more fun. Are there any fun movies out there that feature quiz bowl or academic competitions? The only one I could think of was Mean Girls. Thanks in advance.

Not a movie, but the episode "Bambi" of the show The Young Ones (highly recommended in general) centers on the main characters going on University Challenge (the same QB analogue as in Starter for 10). It also features Mötorhead, if you're into that.

There's also the quiz episode of Malcolm in the Middle, which seems to have been a great inspiration for a certain Harvard alum.

I quite enjoyed Redford's 1994 film Quiz Show. It's got Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro as the two stars and it focuses on a trivia TV show in the 1950s. I watched it in high school and I don't remember anything bad in it.

That's Academic Decathlon, you heathen.

Anyway, no one has mentioned Brahman Naman yet, which is available on Netflix and directed by someone named Mukherjee.

Slumdog Millionaire is about a quiz show and is substantially better than most of the movies listed above. Except for Mean Girls, of course.
