Also, what do they call middle schools in Canada? The Forbidden Zone?

Oh, the many mysteries of quizbowl.

It became a quibowl meme: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... es#p114540
The meme was around well before the stats program. I believe it originated from a lot of NAQT questions one year involving bees.

This change happened pretty soon after 2012 ICT Guerrilla. I got a tossup on Nova Scotia pretty early, and jokingly called it middle school trivia. Someone on the other team, maybe Weiner, then asked that question.

I'm pretty sure the stats program name was a forced acronym named after the meme.

I think it has lingered. There's definitely a higher propensity of :bees: mentions in NAQT. Might be because I'm looking for it, though.

Either way, the meme definitely predates the stat program.

Yes, and once it became a meme, non-ACF tournaments started seeing a lot of tossups about bees, especially colony collapse disorder. The first or second incarnation of Minnesota Open had an infamous "19 tossup packet", where there was a tossup about the founder of American beekeeping.

I own a tie with bees on it, which I bought for wearing around quizbowl people.

I was talking about this with R. Hentzel at one point a few years ago, and he noted that ACF has had way more bee references in recent years than NAQT.

LL Langstroth is also the great-grandfather of the great Clyde Cowan, and thus rather important for his contribution to physics, as well!

(Though it was quite disappointing to dig up that clue and then have Evan tell me "I think that guy was a tossup in some MO")
