1989 Allen Ludden at Auburn

Post by ValenciaQBowl »

This was the best tournament of 1989 in the Southeast. I totally smoked toss-ups on HP Lovecraft and Lou Reed. But on the other hand, Georgia Tech beat my UF team something like 400-60. But we got to listen repeatedly to my cassette of The English Beat's "Wh'appen" the whole way back to Gainesville, so it was cool.

It's the earliest tournament listed on the Stanford archive!

I was usually too lazy back then to actually write questions for the team, but I do like the two-line toss-up on "Heisei," or "Achieving Peace," in the UF packet! Who says we didn't know stuff back then?

Hmm, I think it was in March. I know it was in spring, as it wasn't football season.

Also, as I was thinking about this tournament (my first outside of UF, FSU, Berry, or Stetson, who actually had a program in the 80s), I remembered that the all-stars were determined by a vote of the teams. Each team wrote down the top four players they played against, and the top four got little plaques or something. I remember our captain, Mike Brooks, writing stuff like "guy with glasses from Tennessee" and such, since we didn't necessarily learn names.

Love your era, kids!

I was unaware that Auburn ever had a team prior to this past year.

Auburn won the very first Trash tournament back in 1993.
