TRICON 5: COMING SUMMER 2017

Post by Frater Taciturnus »

it is with a heavy heart that i must announce that the tricon is at it again
This is the announcement for Tricon 5: ACF Memes for Canonical Teens, the latest in the Tricon series of whimsy-filled side events. The intended timeframe for this event to run is as part of the "Second Open" weekend in summer 2017.

This will be a totally guerilla (that is, 100% unedited, free of charge, and whatever "casual" may mean) tournament.

This tournament will require you to write a 30-tossup, no-bonus packet, containing 1 question representing each of the 30 categories below. As always, the distribution has changed from last time to reflect new and exciting possibilities in question topics.

The mantra here is: "Write on creative and difficult things that are too weird or too hard to include in any other quizbowl tournament, but that you still might expect someone, somewhere to answer." Don't go too far in either the standard-ACF-Nationals canon or in the "let's just write on things that I know the best players in quizbowl can't get to prove I can do it" directions. The Hirsch, Weiner, Adams, Douglass, and Carson packets from the original set are the best examples of the tone we are going for here.

DISTRIBUTION

Academic (11)

A question about a specific American short story whose answer is the title of that short story
A history question focusing heavily on wacky/surreal aspects of life under some sort of totalitarian regime
A question on a specific city or town in the U.S. that is not a state capital and has a population of less than 50,000
A question on classical/fine art music by an American composer
A good question on a hard current events topic
A question on the second-most famous creative work by someone who is only famous for one thing
A question from any academic category whose answer is something without a Wikipedia page and which contains no clues that can be learned from Wikipedia
A science history question
A question on comic books or graphical novels with literary merit
A good question on international relations or "thought about world politics" on an answer that hasn't come up 100 times
A question on something from a non-science academic category that you think every room at Tricon has a chance at answering but you are pretty sure Jordan Brownstein doesn't know

Trash (9)

A question directly related to Twitter
A question about standup comedy
A question on a specific TV episode
A question on country, gospel, or bluegrass music
A question about a specific scene from a movie or TV show
An “in popular culture” question (a question where the answer is something academic but all the clues are trash)
A question on a thing from baseball that isn’t the name of a player or team
A question on something stereotypical of the 2000s as a decade
A question about fonts or typesetting

Mixed/GK/your choice of whether to use academic or trash content (10)

A question relating directly to stupid beliefs that were faddish in the 1970s
A question whose answer is a number greater than 100
A circa-2002 bad NAQT question conceit
A question written from memory
A question involving copyright law
A question involving vigilante justice
A question involving the sum of $45 in some way
A question on something that rhymes with “Tron” where power is awarded for answering in the form of Matt Morrison
A list tossup of at least 6 lines
A question related to "collectibles" in some way

Note -- due to overuse at the first Tricon, the following topics are completely banned from this tournament and may not appear in your questions in any way:
*Anime
*The painter Duccio
*The early 90s rap group Arrested Development
*The Salman Rushdie novel The Ground Beneath Her Feet

Also, you should not write more than 1 tossup in your packet whose answer is the name of an album of music.

No “theme packets” are permitted. You know what this means.

Please write and randomize a packet containing precisely 1 of each question above (or two where noted).

Be as creative as possible and write on whatever difficulty or particular subject you want within the stated parameters. What constitutes a question "on" or "pertaining to" some thing is totally up to your interpretation within the limits of common sense, good faith, and not trying to be more clever than you are, as specified above. Questions should contain superpowers and powers, and probably be around 7 lines long on average, but do what makes sense for each category.

This tournament costs $0 to play and will be edited by no one. There will be a central collator (name and email TBA) whose job is solely to collect the packets from each participating team across the various sites and send out the full compilation of packets for use.

Use this thread to form teams and let people know that you are writing or have completed a packet.

Last year, there were only four packets for this, so I guess I'll advocate if there is any interest in this tournament, people actually contribute packets.

Speaking of those packets, are those gonna be uploaded to the archive any time soon?

If I want to write a packet for this and have no clue what a category is referring to, is it up to my own interpretation?

I don't have the energy to write a full packet but if you want a couple of contributions to your packet let me know.

Any word on where this might be held? I have no idea if there's enough interest in this, but we here at Purdue could probably host this at some point this summer, if there are enough Midwesterners who'd be interested in coming to West Lafayette.

Mike Cheyne calls himself a broadcast journalist, but he's not even a real journalism. I have the REAL scoops around here: this is intended to be played at the August Side Event Weekend.

Yeah, so I probably won't be able to finish this packet on my own, so now seems like a good point to see if anyone wants to collaborate.

I'm collecting packets for this! Make sure you email me your packet by 7 p.m. Eastern on 8/4. If it's sent any later, I will not be able to guarantee its timely inclusion with the set.

Please include Tricon in your email subject. If you don't and I misplace your packet, it's your fault, not mine.
