ACF Nationals 2014: April 12 & 13 at Columbia University NYC

Post by Matt Weiner »

This is the announcement for this year’s Academic Competition Federation national championship tournament. I have highlighted changes from last year's announcement in red. Many elements of the tournament have not changed.

ACF Nationals this year will once again be held at Columbia University in exciting New York City. The tournament will be held on the weekend of Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13, 2014.

The tournament will convene at or near Hamilton Hall on the Columbia campus at 8:00 AM on Saturday the 12th and run until around 6:00 PM, then finish from 8 AM to about 2 PM on Sunday the 13th.

Jerry Vinokurov will be the head editor of this tournament, assisted by Ted Gioia, Auroni Gupta, and Ryan Westbrook. Matt Weiner will be Tournament Director. Nationals will once again be a fully staffed, efficiently run tournament with a sensible format that remembers to award the Undergraduate and Division II trophies.

As it was last year, our recommendation is that teams stay in northern New Jersey (Fort Lee or Secacuus), or Queens, and take the train to the tournament. You will find better pricing on hotels and not have to deal with parking in Manhattan, for which ACF takes no responsibility.

If you have any questions about the logistics of ACF Nationals that you need answered right now, feel free to post here or e-mail Matt Weiner at [email protected]. We’re looking forward to a healthy field and a great event.

Teams who want to register or submit packets right now can contact Jerry at [email protected], but there will be a web-based registration system opening shortly which you should use instead once it becomes available.

Packet submission, eligibility, and fee schedule:

Information on who is eligible to play ACF tournaments and details regarding packet submission can be found at the ACF Packet Submission Guidelines.

Fee schedule:

Base fee: $260
-$100 discount: January 12
-$50 discount: January 26
-$25 discount: February 9
No penalty: February 23
+$25 penalty: March 2
+$50 penalty: March 9

NOTE: No packets will be accepted later than two weeks before the tournament!

If your team brings (fully pays for/does not claim any reimbursement from the tournament for) a qualified moderator, you will receive a $100 discount. Qualified moderators are people who can properly complete an ACF Nationals round in thirty minutes. I, Matt Weiner, will be the sole judge of who is qualified, both prior to and during the tournament, and will not award the discount if your staffer fails to meet this requirement. You may, theoretically, claim this discount as many times as possible until your fee reaches $0.

ACF cannot make this any clearer: After the $50 deadline, you will owe the editors $10/day; if you cannot turn in a packet more than two weeks in advance of ACF Nationals, you will not be playing ACF Nationals. This is a hard and fast deadline and there will be no exceptions.

This year, ACF will continue the 50 dollar discount for teams who write at least 20/20 that doesn’t need any major editing and submit their packet by the no penalty deadline. By major editing, we mean things like having to change many of the clues and/or answerlines and having to fix many grammatical errors.

We would much rather give out lots of hefty discounts for excellent early packets than rake in money for late ones, so please take advantage of them.

There is a field cap of 44 teams for this tournament; should more than 44 teams register, a waitlist will be formed, though we do expect a 44-team field to accommodate this year's level of interest.

Please stay in touch with me, Jerry, or Susan if we are trying to verify your attendance at this event. Dropping of teams who do not communicate about their registration or packet will be done without remorse. While we are not expecting a lot of competition for space in the field, we do need to know who is actually coming to the tournament for several planning purposes, and the editors need time to work on your packets. If we ask you where your packet is or whether the team you said was "interested" two months ago is actually coming, the worst thing you can do is just ignore the e-mail and tell us nothing. Make sure you give valid contact information when you register and check it on at least a weekly basis.

In 2015, moving Regionals earlier and/or implementing a Regionals-based qualification system will begin. 2014 will be the last ACF Nationals with fully "first-come, first-served"-based entry.

Distribution:

5/5 Literature: This includes 1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, 1/1 World, and 1/1 Other (which can include any of the preceding categories). Please vary your questions by time, place, and genre (for instance, please don’t submit 5/5 on French literature or 5/5 poetry).

5/5 History: This includes 1/1 American, 2/2 European, 1/1 World, and 1/1 Other (which can include any of the preceding categories). Please make sure that your questions aren’t all from the same time period or place and aren’t all one type of history (for instance, try not to submit 5/5 political history or 5/5 military history).

5/5 Science: This includes 1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, and 2/2 Other Science (including areas like Astronomy, Earth Science, Math, and Computer Science). Please don’t write two questions about the same scientific subdistribution.

3/3 Arts: This includes 1/1 Painting, 1/1 Classical Music, and 1/1 Other (including Architecture, Sculpture, Opera, Jazz, Ballet/Dance, Art Film, and Photography). Please vary your questions by time, place, and genre.

3/3 RMP: This includes 1/1 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, and 1/1 Philosophy. Please do not write both religion questions on the same religion or both mythology questions on the same myth system.

1/1 Social Science: This includes Psychology, Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics, and Social Criticism. Please write your tossup and bonus on different areas of social science.

1/1 Geography/Current Events: These questions should be about different parts of the world. Geography questions that incorporate cultural and environmental clues instead of purely discussing physical features are particularly welcome.

1/1 Other Academic: This includes questions from every preceding category, as well as answers that don’t quite fit into any of the preceding categories.

Keep in mind that ACF Nationals does not have trash; if you submit any trash questions, they will simply be sent back.

To reiterate, please vary the distribution of your questions. In past years, we had teams submit packets with both chemistry questions about the same narrow area, to present one example, and it would prevent many headaches if you make sure your questions are reasonably distributed. Also, please remember that while the goal of ACF Nationals is to determine the best team in the nation, writing primarily about extremely difficult topics is not the best way to achieve this, so please try to keep your fellow players in mind while choosing your answer lines.

This announcement comes with ample time for everyone to start writing their Nationals packets and submit them as early as possible. We want to give you every opportunity to save money on this fantastic event and save us the trouble of having to edit a bunch of packets at the last minute. You should avail yourself of this chance posthaste.

All packets should be sent to [email protected]. If you have any questions about packet writing, you can send them to that email address also. Start writing!

Dropping of teams who do not communicate about their registration or packet will be done without remorse.
I can't emphasize this point enough. Every year, there are a few (usually one or two) teams that for whatever reason cause us problems by not submitting their packets on time and not communicating adequately about their packet status. We're going to be very strict about not allowing this to happen; after the $50 deadline passes, if you have not submitted a packet, you'll start getting emails from me. If those emails are not answered to our satisfaction, you're going to be at risk of being dropped from the field.

We don't want to boot anyone, but the problems caused by waiting on a few teams to get their act together and actually submit the packets they've promised far outweigh the benefits of collecting your penalties. We'd so much rather spend our time working to give you the best tournament we can, and we'd also much rather have you submit packets early so we have the time to edit them properly. So please be aware of this new policy and do your best to comply with it.

What difficulty, in comparison to previous ACF Nationals tournaments, should teams aim for when submitting their packets? Is the intention a tournament that looks more like ACF Nationals 2011 or more like 2012/13?

I'll say this, and this is from the perspective of someone who hated ACF Nationals 2011, that the tournament had a lot of excellent questions, just as the 2012 set (and presumably the 2013 set, which I didn't play) had a number of way too hard questions. Obviously, I would guess the 2012-2013 sets resemble more of the idealized Nats, but I don't want anyone to interpret Auroni's comment (which was not his intent) of saying "don't write questions that resemble any of the 2011 ones." There were many good questions in that set and the ones that are difficulty appropriate with good clues should be emulated as well.

We're shooting for the difficulty levels of 2012 and 2013. Let me say a few words about that: as I explained back in 2011, a lot of the packets that came in were substantially harder than the final versions. As hard as that tournament was, an unedited-for-difficulty version of it would have been even harder. Therefore, please keep in mind both us, the editors, and your fellow players when writing your questions. That does not mean "do not write on this hard thing that's totally important." It does mean that your packet should probably have only a few such questions. It also means that your bonuses should not be of the "stump the chump" variety. Hard parts should be hard, of course, but they should also be plausibly gettable by people with excellent knowledge in the field. If (what you think of as) the middle part of your bonus is asking for (e.g.) a noted scholar of Jacobean drama or a tertiary variant of some more famous effect, your bonus is almost certainly too hard and will be edited down.

Obviously it's Nationals and that means that questions will range over a wider space of possible answers than in probably any non-open tournament. But in writing your questions, take some time to think about how they would play between both the top and the bottom teams. If you don't see the top teams legitimately combining for 500+ points on a packet, that's probably too hard. If in doubt, err on the side of making things easier rather than harder; it's always easier for us to edit an easier question to be up to par than it is to change a very hard question into something that will play well. In the latter case, we'll most likely have to throw it out altogether and write a replacement, and that's a time-consuming operation.

Packets keep on rolling in. Thanks, folks! I do have one teensy request for all of you though: could you please label the categories in your submissions? It's pretty easy to separate science from history, but several packets have come in without category labels and that makes it a bit tough to figure out what constitutes social science or misc. academic or whatever. So just note the categories for our benefit, please.

You now can (and should! nay, must!) register for ACF Nationals via this form. Please do not wait to submit a packet to register for the tournament (of course if you already have submitted one, you should obviously register right away)! In particular, please pay careful attention to the roster portion of the registration form: we need to know what your team will look like so we can do some proper bracketing.

The other thing of note is the $100 moderator discount. Because the discount is awarded at the discretion of the TD, we can only give it to you after the fact if your moderator actually shows up and meets the requirements. Therefore, if you think that you are going to bring someone who is going to get you that discount, please notify us via the "Additional comments" box and we will note that, and discount your final entry fee at the time of the tournament accordingly.

Google Forms seems to include an option to change your submission after the fact, so if your information changes, please update the submission via the "Edit your response" link that Google shows you after you've registered.

Looking forward to seeing you all in New York.

Also, I should point out that at this point we have 24 registrations for Nationals. That means there are only 20 spots left, so if you're planning to play this tournament, you should definitely register. If possible, it would be best for teams planning to play to register before the no-penalty deadline so we have some idea of which packets we can expect.

Good evening, quizbowl. This is to remind you that tonight is the no-penalty deadline for turning in a Nationals packet. Every packet that comes in after today will incur the corresponding penalties indicated in the announcement. And of course, no packets at all will be accepted less than two weeks prior to the tournament. So if you have yet to submit a packet and are required to do so (which is most of the teams that are registered and have not sent one in), best get working on it. We'd much rather have your packets with enough time to edit them than we would your late fees.

There are currently 30 teams signed up for this tournament. I'd like to remind all readers that:

1) Due to staff and space realities, there is essentially no chance that the 44-team cap on this tournament will be expanded; once we hit 44, you can only enter the field if someone else drops out, and there's not much that will be done about this if you are a contending team who doesn't sign up on time.
2) We will be enforcing packet submission rules, as well as the notes in the original post about maintaining active communication, in order to verify that everyone who has signed up actually plans to attend and isn't locking someone else out of the tournament artificially.

Make sure you register if you plan on coming, follow instructions on how to keep your registration from being cancelled, and submit your packet on time. Thanks.

Of the 30 teams currently signed up, we have 21 packets submitted, and only one team is currently exempt from writing. So if you're not that team (and you probably know whether you are or not), you should probably think about submitting a packet soon.

The $50 deadline passed last night; any packet that were in my inbox this morning are considered to have met the deadline.

We currently have an even 32 teams registered. This is a nice round number that should be easily divisible into a sensible number of brackets. I don't expect that number to change, but it's very important that if you anticipate a change in your registration status that you contact me right away, as this obviously affects logistics.

North Carolina's packet was submitted at the $50 deadline but isn't listed above.

Fixed.

I've gotten a few questions about invoices; they'll be going out this weekend.

Columbia submitted a pair of packets a while ago, but I don't see us on the list. Sorry for not noticing the discrepancy before now.

It's two weeks before ACF Nationals. Have the field/field size and schedule format been finalized in keeping with the non-acceptance of packets past this point?

Yes. Barring any last-minute drops, the field has been set at 34 teams. Once he gets back from ICT, Matt W. will work out the appropriate schedule.

Not knowing the number of submitted and editor's packets, I think something like 12/11/11 crossing over into 3 groups of 12/12/10 could be the appropriate number of rounds (~20). I think that gets every at least 17-18 games.

There are 15 submitted packets and 10 editors packets. As this is ACF Nats, we must play off ties on packets, so 4 editors packets are reserved for ties out of prelims, ties out of playoffs, and up to two finals games, which means there are 15 and 6 to work with for general play. I spent time on my ICT trip talking to various people about possible formats and will also listen to any suggestions posted here before making a final decision.

I would prefer a schedule which does not double-track packets (i.e. use one packet for some games, and another packet for other games, during the same round) if at all possible; as I understand it, the numbers last year and the year before required that this happen for some of the early playoff rounds. With 34 teams, 15 submitted packets, and 10 editors' packets, would it be possible to do two giant prelim brackets of 17 for most of the schedule [using all submitted packets, Editors 1, and Editors 2], then do two or three crossover games to obtain a top four or top six, getting teams 18-19 games total? Or would that be infeasible/too much of a stretch for staff? It seems from the stats that 2010 Nats used a similar schedule to this, though I wasn't there and am not sure. I presume that if a single team ends up dropping/no-showing, as can happen, 3x11 into crossovers is also quite doable, though that would require double-tracking for a round or two.

The problem with the two-bracket solution is that we have submissions that are combinations of 3 packets, so I don't see how that would work with a 17-team RR.

edit: I mean, there are packets which are constructed from 3 submissions.

We are using an 11-game, three-bracket prelim followed by crossover of each group of four teams.

On Saturday we will play through round 16 -- round 12 is a tiebreaker round that may or may not be played depending on whether there are ties out of the prelims. Sunday will have rounds 17-20 and the finals.

We intend to begin round 1 as close to 8:30 AM as possible. Arrive anytime after 8:30 and you risk missing part of your first game. Once we are ready to start, the tournament will not be held up for any team. As with last year, please assemble next to the main entrance of Hamilton Hall (on the south side of the building, two left turns from the nearest campus entrance) for registration & an opening meeting between 8 and 8:30. Staff should arrive as close to 8 as possible so we can get buzzers set up promptly.

If weather makes an outdoor meeting impossible, then send your team to the fourth floor to wait in available classrooms while one person from each team registers & hears opening announcements in room 407.

Likewise, plan to be on campus at 8 AM on Sunday. I am trying to keep the schedule under control so we can go through the finals without a lunch break but end earlier than last year.

Please review the rules for what is considered Undergraduate and Division II status at ACF Nationals. We will be asking you to give the status of each player on your roster at check-in on Saturday. Even if your team as a whole is not eligible for UG/D2 placement, we want to make sure players are recognized for individual all-star awards within those divisions. If you have any questions about a player's status under these rules, please ask me this week or in person on Saturday.

UNDERGRADUATE PLAYER must meet both of these conditions:
1) Received a BA degree or equivalent no earlier than the fall semester of 2013 (including not yet received at all)
2) Graduated from high school no earlier than spring 2010, OR did not participate in any collegiate/open academic quizbowl tournaments prior to fall 2010, OR both

DIVISION II player must meet this condition: A person who is UG-eligible AND is in their first or second academic year of college enrollment. No other factors (credits, age, high school playing experience, whether they were DII-eligible previously) matter -- this is the sole criterion.

An Undergraduate team is composed entirely of Undergraduate players; a D2 team is composed solely of D2 players.

The UG and D2 trophy rules are the same as they have been in the past several years and, effectively, the same as they are at ICT and CHB. A UG team must either make the overall final, or finish ahead of the next UG team in the standings by a number of positions equal to the size of the playoff bracket (in this case, 12) to clinch the UG title without a final. Otherwise, there is an advantaged final (unless the teams are outright tied, in which case it is a one-game final). Second and third place will be played off if outright tied. The same rules apply to D2.

Thanks to everyone for seeing through a very lengthy and exciting Saturday schedule. We've put the tournament in a position to conclude briskly tomorrow.

Please be on time for Sunday -- staffers in room 602 at 7:45 and teams in their round 17 game rooms ready to play at 8 AM. This is the same as what was announced today and printed on the schedule. Thanks.

Results of the playoffs (including crossover games), through the end of Saturday, are available here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /playoffs/

Some caveats: Half of the last round doesn't have anything but a score entered because I am le tired, and one second-level game isn't there (MD-B/NW). Five teams at 0 or 1 loss will enter tomorrow with a chance at a national championship, and 8 of the 10 head-to-head matches from that group are still to come over four rounds in the morning.

We're about to start round 18 -- round 20 is the end of the playoffs and will be followed by the announcement of finals pairings/tiebreakers. Finals will be recorded for later posting, though the Internet connection here may not support streaming live.

Currently:

North Carolina (+advantage) is playing Notre Dame in the first game of an advantaged D2 final.
Berkeley A is playing Michigan State in a one-game, third-place undergraduate tiebreaker.

Yale is playing Chicago A in the first game of a two-game, three-team tiebreaker for second place.
The winner will play Penn A for second place.

If Yale loses this game, they will play Harvard in an advantaged Undergraduate final. If Yale wins this game, they will win UG by default.

Virginia has cleared the field undefeated to win ACF Nationals 2014.
