Scattergories (February 2017)

Post by women, fire and dangerous things »

This is the announcement for Scattergories, a tossup-only multi-subject side tournament written by me. As a vanity tournament, it will consist of questions only on categories I like (mostly literature and arts), and will be quite hard (but not, like, Arrabal hard). It will be played after the Michigan site of (This) Tournament Is a Crime, and will be available for mirrors elsewhere starting in February. It'll cost $10 a person to play.

Each packet will consist of 24 tossups. The per-packet distribution is as follows (number of packets to come):

Literature
3 fiction
3 poetry
2 drama
1 non-fiction
1 my choice

Fine arts
3 painting/sculpture
2 film
1 architecture/photography
1 dance/other performance
2 auditory (at least one of which will be classical music)
1 my choice

Other
1 philosophy
1 social science (mostly psychology and linguistics, most likely)
1 religion/mythology (mostly religion, most likely)
1 my choice (this could be anything, even, heaven forfend, science)

I've already written a goodly number of questions on what I think are creative and interesting topics, so I hope lots of people play this.

For those who have never experienced a Will Nediger random question reading: the man is an insane genius. You'll want to play this.

I think that at least part of this event should consist of quizbowl-related Scattergories lists (think of all the points you can get for knowing those alliterative character names from Restoration comedies!)

Now that around three packets are done, an update which will surprise precisely nobody who knows me well: the lit and arts in this set will be heavily skewed towards 20th and 21st century stuff, and there will be a lot of common links. Clue-wise, things are shaping up to be rather hard (comparable to this year's CO in terms of early clues), but the preponderance of common links means that there will be a lot of accessible answerlines.

This tournament is completely done, and consists of 10 packets of 24 tossups plus a tiebreaker. So I guess if anybody's interested in holding a mirror earlier than (This) Tournament Is a Crime, feel free to contact me.

I'm down to play this. Don't expect me to buzz on much literature.

This weekend's mirrors have wrapped up. If you're interested in holding a mirror, let me know sometime this week, otherwise I'll post the set.

There was some unconfirmed talk about possibly mirroring it at NYU on 3/25 alongside the Oxford Open, which I hope happens since I'd like to play this.

The two packets of this that I heard were hard but great. Would love a chance to play the other 6 packets if possible.

Now that all mirrors are completed, people are free to post any comments they'd like. I just uploaded it to hsqb, so it should appear soon.

This was very fun to read through. The annotations are a sweet idea. I would've gladly first line-negged Sonmi-451, forgetting the full name of the section. That priming tossup is also cool since the spreading activation effect should come up more. Wish I could've played!

Even though I would have been a complete buzzer rock on most of it, the above summarizes my feelings. Also, as you can guess from my avatar, I'm super happy that Ubu got tossed up (though to be ridiculously pedantic I should point out that he doesn't throw the royal family into the debraining machine, just every other noble in the country. Doubt that messed anybody up, anyway).

Also, the delightfully nonzero Broadway content was universally masterfully executed.

Read through a couple of packets at practice today. Great film questions!
