1st annual JAKOB: Online History Extravaganza

Post by A Dim-Witted Saboteur »

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section, but this will be somewhat larger-scale than a single packet. After testing interest within the Illinois Quiz Bowl community, I've decided to try my hand at writing. Starting sometime in January/February, I will be administering the Joint Academic Kids' Organization Bowl (JAKOB). This will be an all-History set intended to give players credit for knowledge of (in my opinion) underrepresented portions of the normal history canon at a college/hard HS nats difficulty level.

The distribution will be as follows: 3/3 Asian History (including Australia and New Zealand) (Thereof, 1/1 China, 1/1 India, 1/1 other), 3/3 European History, 3/3 Non-US American History (thereof: 1/1 North America, 1/1 South America, 1/1 either or both), 3/3 Middle Eastern/North African History (1/1 Pre-Islamic, 1/1 medieval, 1/1 modern) 3/3 US History , 3/3 Sub-Saharan African Hist, 2/2 Miscellaneous.

This post is just to gauge interest, but I'll probably end up capping team size at 3.
This will be held on Sundays from the 8th to the 22nd via skype at 6 PM.

Nah. This is just intended as an experiment to see if I can write good tossups with all of you as the guinea pigs. I'll worry about money later.

EDIT: Also, I'm kinda still competing in NHBB this year. That could raise some issues.

All are welcome. I might, however, place more stringent limits on the number of college players allowed per team. Would a maximum of 2 college (or open) players per team bother anyone? (Please note: this would allow teams composed of two college players and one high schooler)

I'm definitely interested in this. How are teams going to be formed? Free agent style or more "find your own teammates" kind of deal?

EDIT: Those sound like the same thing. What I mean to say is Free Agent = Maybe a draft or some sort of list and people make teams, and "find your own..." = find your own outside of this forum then come back and state your team

Thanks for asking! If you could find your own that would be great, but if I wind up with a large number of people who want to play on a team but don't have one, I'll do a free-agency thing.

In the interest of keeping this thread short, I invite anyone who is interested in this to DM me on either Facebook or this forum. My profile pic is the same on FB as it is here so it shouldn't be hard to find. Also, I've finished the first packet, so if you're interested in playtesting, let me know. NOTE: Playtesters will not be elgible to compete once the entire set is ready.

I'm certainly glad to hear that. In other news, I've completely finished editing the first packet (My deepest thanks to Jordan Brownstein and Harris Bunker for helping me do this).

In other news, if you want to register a team, you can use this link. This tournament will have no registration fee or entrance fee, because I'm just nice like that.

I think having a spreadsheet for signups would be nice, since it allows everyone to see who the free agents are.

This seems like a good idea. I have not received any signups yet via the form, but when I do, these will be added to a spreadsheet.

A couple of questions before I commit.

1. Do you have any timetable on when this tournament will happen (I do not want to commit if I can't)
2. Should free agents still use the form or should we just post on the boards and find a team and then fill out the form (if yes to this question, this acts as my call to find teammates. I'm decent at all history, favor Latin-American history, PM me on the forums if interested).

Thanks, Jakob

As an answer to these questions: 1) probably sunday evenings in January unless another time that works for everyone can be found
and 2) Just post your team name as "Free Agents". I'll have the spreadsheet up soon.

All right. I've mostly finished the first two packets (with the most kind editing assistance of Jordan Brownstein, Govind Prabhakhar, Shawn Yoshida, and Harris Bunker), so we should be good to go beginning January 8 (I will be incommunicado for the week from the 30th to the 6th). If you're interested, pls fill out the form. As of now, we have the following teams participating:
Team 1: Will Alston, Andrew Wang, Tejas Raje
Team 2: Luke Tierney, Jason Golfinos, Ricky Rivera
Team 3: Ali Saeed, Jon Suh, Cole Timmerwilke
Team 4: Samuel Kao, Douglas Simons
Team 5: Kenji Shimizu, Kurtis Droge
Team 6: Jason Zhou, Richard Yu
Team 7: Eric Mukherjee, Patrick Liao, Jacob Reed
Team 8: Brian Owen, Lee Holden, Shub Mehta
Team 9: Charles Hang, Will Mason, Chandler West
Team 10: Laurence Li, Moses Kitakule, Charles Tian
Team 11: Conor Thompson, Ujwal Punyamurtula
Team 12: Emmett Laurie, Corry Wang
Team 13: Austin Foos, Victor Prieto
Team 14: Matthew Lehmann, Andy Huff
Team 15: Weijia Cheng, Arjun Nageswaran
Team 16: Bhanodai Pippala, Colin Cantwell

Register by the 30th if possible. The link is in this thread.
EDIT: Holy :capybara: there are a lot of teams signed up for this. I think I'll probably split the field into two pools of 7 teams apiece with this level of interest (pending further signups). If you're listed as a free agent, you have until 10 tonight to form teams before I break out the RNG.

OK. If I keep adhering to the "2 college players per team" cap, it's pretty clear that this league will quickly reach an unmanageable size. I'm thus lifting the cap effective immediately. Just pls try not to form superteams.

Will this be available for offline mirrors? If so, on which date will it become available? In any case I hope to play it at some point, though I am certainly not skilled enough to play with the people currently signed up.

There was a post above about some kind of Canadian mirror; the set will be available for mirroring as soon as the league itself has run its course, which should be around the end of January.

The preliminary rounds are complete.
Congratulations to teams 7 (Eric Mukherjee, Patrick Liao), Team 1 (Will Alston, Andrew Wang, Tejas Raje), Team 10 (Laurence Li, Moses Kitakule, Charles Tian), and Team 5 (Kenji Shimizu, Kurtis Droge). So far, the top scorer has been Will Alston. Further results will be available upon completion of the playoffs on the 22nd.

When will you post the rest of the packets. Unless of course some teams still need to play.

The last two packets have been added. Stats incoming probably tonight if I have time. Thanks everyone for playing!

EDIT: I almost forgot. Congratulations to the winning team WAO-Wee (Will Alston, Tejas Raje, Andrew Wang), the runners-up, Team 7 (Eric Mukherjee, Patrick Liao), and the third-place team, The People of Eugene, Oregon v. Debs (Kenji Shimizu, Kurtis Droge).
