VETO 2017 @ University Of Toronto (Aug. 12, 2017)
Posted: Fri May 05, 2017 11:27 am
On behalf of the University of Toronto Academic Trivia club, I will be TDing the 2017 edition of VETO East at Toronto. We'll be doing a few things differently than the Vancouver mirror this year, but never fear! The spirit of VETO that you know and love (or have different strong feelings about) is still alive and well!
When/Where: VETO will be happening on Saturday, August 12 at the University of Toronto. This is the day before the Toronto mirror of Super ACRONYM, which you can learn more about here. Start time and location will be updated closer to the date of the tournament.
Costs/Writing: This tournament is a free, pack-submission tournament. Each team playing will have to submit a pack of 21/20 (21 tossups and 20 bonuses) with the following distribution:
---------------------------------------------------
3/3 Science (at least 1/0 or 0/1 each of chemistry, biology, and physics)
3/3 History (vary times, places, types of history)
3/3 Literature (vary times, places, genres of literature)
3/3 Thought and Beliefs (religion, mythology, philosophy, and social science; at least 1/0 or 0/1 of each)
2/2 Fine Arts (1/1 each of visual and audio, including at least 1/0 or 0/1 painting/sculpture and 1/0 or 0/1 classical music/opera)
2/2 Geography/Pop Culture/Current Events (at least 1/0 or 0/1 of each)
5/4 your choice (this includes your tiebreaker. This can include up to an extra 1/1 of each of the bolded categories above, things that don't fit neatly into any single category above, general knowledge, etc.)
21/20 Total
---------------------------------------------------
Canadian Content: Of the above, at least 2/2 must refer to Canadian people, places, things, events, and created works (this differs from the typical 4/4 requirement). You are welcome and encouraged to write more than this if you want.
Multimedia Questions: The multimedia (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory) question will be optional at the Toronto mirror. You are still encouraged to write multimedia questions, but it's not mandatory.
Question length: We've had a problem with the tournament running very long in the past. As such, there will be a length cap on questions for this tournament. Tossups must be between 5-7 lines in 10-point Times New Roman on a standard letter size page with 1-inch margins(before bolding for [optional] power and adding pronunciation guides). Bonus parts must be no longer than 2 lines each with a one line intro (your intro can be up to two lines if the first bonus part is one line or shorter). If your multimedia question would take longer to perform than a question of this length would reasonably take to resolve, then it's too long.
Submission Deadline: There is a hard deadline of noon on Friday, August 11 for submitting your pack. If it is even a second later than this, you will be dropped from the tournament. Please email your packets to me at [email protected] so that I can send them to the Vancouver site.
Editing: VETO is a guerrilla tournament, which means that your packets will be edited by no one. The one exception to this is that if you go over the length limit for questions, they will be cut until they fit, grammar or sense be damned. Seriously, please keep your question length under control.
Registration: You may register by emailing me at [email protected] with your name and the names of the people on your team (if your teammates are TBD, that's cool). The deadline for team registration is 11:59:59pm, Sunday, August 6. There is a field cap of 13 teams for this tournament. You can also view the team formation sheet here.
See you in August!
