SMT at Michigan (3/31)

Post by CPiGuy »

The University of Michigan quizbowl team is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a mirror of the Stevenson Memorial Tournament. The mirror will take place on March 31st, 2018.

The existence of this mirror is predicated on our ability to reserve rooms for free; we will know this for sure by February 24th but our internal director expects us to be able to reserve rooms.

Question Set and Eligibility
We will be using the Stevenson Memorial Tournament question set.
This is a closed tournament; all teams must consist of players from a single institution (high school or college). High school teams are permitted to play.
This is an undergraduate tournament (although fifth-year and beyond undergraduates are allowed to play). If anyone with a bachelor's degree wishes to play, they should contact the editors of the set.

Fees and Payment
$110 per team
-$5 per working buzzer system
-$15 per 200 miles travelled one way
-$20 per staffer
Minimum cost of $40 per team regardless of discounts applied

Registration, Field Caps, and Staffing
To register, email me at [email protected].
The field cap for this tournament will be 10 teams due to staffing and room reservation limits. We don't expect to go over this, based on the number of teams registered for the previous mirror at MSU, but it may be raised to 10 depending on staffing and room availability.
We are extending a higher staff discount because we would like to, for the most part, play the tournament rather than staff it -- we are hosting this mirror on short notice to give ourselves and other clubs in the area the opportunity to play the set in person, and we don't want to make our club members unable to play, as we are also hosting FST the previous weekend. If you have anyone in your club who is ineligible or who is playing the online test mirror, it would be greatly appreciated if you could bring those people to staff!

Current Field
Michigan 3-4
OSU 2
MSU 1
Wright State 1
CWRU 1

We've reserved 5 rooms, so this is definitely happening with a field cap of ten.

I sent out logistics emails last night. If you signed up a team and didn't get an email, you should let me know.

This happened. Michigan A cleared the field by four. Stats are here.

Major props to U-M for stepping up and hosting this when we didn't get enough interest. This tournament was well-ran and ended promptly. Neg5 was kind of cool to use but I made a few typos. Thanks again to Conor and the rest of the Michigan crew like Saul and Kenji for running a great last regular season tournament of the year.

A private discussion forum has been opened for everyone who played an SMT mirror. To join the private forum, go to User Control Panel -> Usergroups -> Select "2018 SMT Discussion" -> Click "Submit". We'd love your input on the set before the last few mirrors in May, so please join the discussion forum if you haven't already! Thank you!
