Imaginary Landscape No. 5

Post by kwang »

Hello all,

I’m pleased to announce Imaginary Landscape No. 5, an audio music tournament written by myself (Kevin Wang), Benjamin Xu, and Michael Yue. This tournament will be played at the 2019 High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT).

FORMAT:
This tournament will comprise 8 rounds of 20 questions each, covering all musical genres but focusing on classical music. Each question will consist of pyramidally arranged audio clips, approximately 60 seconds in total. In the style of Imaginary Landscape No. 4, distribution will be by time period as follows:

2 pre-1750
3 1750 - 1830
5 1830 - 1910
3 1910 - present
1 film
1 jazz
1 musical
1 pop
3 miscellaneous, comprising either music that doesn’t fit a well-defined category or cross-period/genre common links.

Within the classical and miscellaneous questions, there will be at least 3 orchestral, 1 keyboard, 1 instrumental/chamber, 2 operas, 1 choral/vocal, and 0.5 dance per round.

Furthermore, this set will follow the wide-ranging difficulty scale employed in older IL sets. Roughly half the questions will be classified as “easy”, three-eighths as “medium”, and one-eighth as “hard”. As to what these difficulties mean, we found the IL3 post to be a useful guide:
Eddie Kim wrote:Easy: accessible topics pervasive throughout culture and media, gettable by anyone who is not living under a rock
Medium: topics popular in the academic and concert repertoire, or otherwise exploring "deeper" works with accessible giveaways
Hard: deep, specialist, or niche topics
LOGISTICS AND REGISTRATION:

This event will take place at 8:30pm on Saturday evening at HSNCT. It will be a singles tournament using the ladder system, 8 players per room. There will be an initial seeding round of 20 questions, 5 rounds of ladder play of 20 questions each, and a finals round of 40 questions.

The HSNCT mirror is capped at 32 players. There is no fee. If anyone else is interested in mirroring this tournament, please contact me by email at [email protected].

A quick update: we still plan to run this set at HSNCT, probably on Saturday evening in rooms whose use NAQT has graciously permitted. I hope to get logistics and registration information up here soon (by the end of this month). I also plan to run an online playtest session before HSNCT.

I've heard some interest in a mirror at NSC, though at this point I know that most folks' NSC plans are already finalized. None of the writers will be available on Saturday evening of NSC, but I'd be happy for someone to organize a mirror if there's sufficient interest.

Finally, I've been told to consider this set "authorized"; accordingly, it is now called Imaginary Landscape No. 5 for the sake of convenience.

I'm playing the afternoon prelim session that's scheduled to end at 7:30pm, so we'll aim for a start time of 8:30pm to account for delays and give people some time for dinner.

I'll send out an email (and make a post) closer to the event to confirm room locations and other logistics.

Thanks to more gracious volunteers, the field cap is now 32 players. With under a week left, there are still ten slots open, so now is the time if you’ve been waiting.

Keep an eye out for a logistics email on Friday evening—I will send it after I’ve had a chance to scope out the rooms.

Could someone send me (or remind Kevin to send me) the packets by the middle of Tomorrow? Kevin agreed on me hosting a mirror tomorrow evening.

Thanks.

Yup--I will do so after the mirror tonight.

Here is the logistics email I sent to all players last night:
Hi everyone,

Imaginary Landscape No. 5 at HSNCT will take place on Saturday, 25 May, at 8:30 PM. We will be meeting in front of Rooms A701, A702, A703, and A708 on the Atrium level. Please plan to be there by 8:25 PM at the latest, as we will start playing Round 1 at 8:30 PM. This is one hour after the conclusion of the afternoon prelims session. You are welcome to bring your dinner with you.

There are still 8 open spots in the field, so feel free to spread the word to anyone who may be interested. We will accept signups at the door, but please use the signup sheet to guarantee a spot in case the field fills.

The tournament will use a ladder format, with 8 players per room. There will be an initial seeding round of 20 questions, 5 rounds of ladder play of 20 questions each, and a finals round of 40 questions. Traditional quizbowl rules apply. Gets are 10 points (there are no powers) and negs are -5. There is no registration fee.

Thank you all for playing Imaginary Landscape No. 5, and I hope to see you there.

The final round came down to Beverly Fu, Ophir Lifshitz, Michael Li, Karan Gurazada, Sameer Apte, Jasper Lee, David Dennis, and Saul Hankin. Sameer won with 105 points, Michael came second with 70, and Jasper third with 45. I'll have full results here within a few days.

In total, 28 people attended. Thanks to all of you for playing and especially to everyone, in the finals or otherwise, who stuck with it to the end. I hope you heard some of your favorite music and discovered some new things as well.

Since this set may be mirrored at some point over the summer, it won't be clear for a few months. I haven't created a separate discussion thread, so anyone who has feedback can reach out directly to any of the writers.

Been a long time coming, but we've cleaned up the stats we had for the HSNCT mirror. Unfortunately, a lot of round 1 stats were lost, so we calculated only based on the next 7 rounds. Apologies for this and any other errors in the stats - please contact me at myue [at] college.harvard.edu about any corrections.
