Collegiate Novice @ Georgia Tech (9/15)

Post by JKHtay »

This is really short notice, but here goes nothing. The Georgia Institute of Technology will host a collegiate quizbowl tournament on Saturday, September 15th, 2018. This tournament will use this year's NAQT Collegiate Novice question set. This is intended for players new to collegiate quizbowl.

Location and Time:
Games will take place in the Skiles building on the Georgia Tech campus. The opening meeting will start promptly at 9:00; rounds will start immediately thereafter.

Fees and Payment:
$70 base fee
$10 discount for each capable moderator with working laptop
$10 buzzer discount
$10 travel discount for every 200 miles between your school and the Georgia Institute of Technology, as per Google Maps

Please bring payment on the day of the tournament in the form of cash or a check made out to the "Georgia Tech Academic Quizbowl Team". If we deem that your moderator is not capable or your buzzers are not working, you will not receive a discount.

Registration:
Please send me an e-mail at [email protected] with the number of teams that you intend to bring and any buzzers or staffers that you will supply. If I do not respond within two days, feel free to send another e-mail.

Field (teams/buzzers/staffers):
Georgia Tech (?/1/?)
Georgia (4/4/0)

This tournament happened!

Georgia A defeated Georgia Tech A in a one-game final to win the tournament. Georgia B and Georgia Tech D rounded out the championship bracket. Thanks to NAQT for providing the questions and Georgia for providing enough teams to make this happen. Stats have been uploaded.

At the risk of stealing Naveed's hobbyhorse, I'm a bit puzzled as to why several experienced college players on Georgia A were playing a tournament explicitly meant for collegiate novices. The same goes for the lead scorer on the team that won SSNCT playing on Georgia Tech A. Are these players novices? Quizbowl is fun and I'm all for playing more of it, but to me this seems to step on the toes of the whole point of a novice tournament.

We wanted the tournament to happen and were concerned that excluding players would mean we would not have enough teams to hold a viable tournament, given the short notice on which it was announced. Since NAQT did not explicitly forbid non-novice players from playing, I chose to allow members of UGA A to play.
