NAQT Collegiate Novice (CNS-177C) at New York University (Oct. 27, 2018)

Post by Marcion of Sinope »

This tournament has been announced on NAQT's website for some time now, but we figured a forum post was overdue. To that end:

New York University is exicted to announce a mirror of NAQT's Collegiate Novice (CNS-177C) on Saturday, October 27, on our campus in New York City's Greenwich Village. See more information about the question set here: https://www.naqt.com/college/collegiate ... eries.html.

ELIGIBILITY
While we are not going to impose any specific eligibility restrictions, we ask that everyone keep in mind that this is a novice tournament, intended for people generally new to quiz bowl. We do reserve the right to disallow any particular team or player to participate if we strongly believe it would violate the spirit of such a tournament.

REGISTRATION
Email our president, Rahul Rao-Pothuraju, to register. His email address is rrp346 at NYU's domain name. Make sure to include number of teams, number of buzzers, number of staffers, and any other discounts you would like to claim.

FEES
Base Fee: $15 per player
Buzzer Discount: -$5 per complete, functioning buzzer set
Travel Discount: -$10 per 200 miles traveled in one direction
Staffing: -$10 for a competent staffer (limit one per team)
New Team Discount: -$10 if your school did not attend any collegiate quiz bowl tournaments during the 2017–18 school year (limit one per school)

Minimum fee of $35 per team, or $15 if you're soloing. Payment must be made on the day of the tournament by cash or check only. Please make checks out to "Quiz Bowl at NYU."

LOGISTICS
The tournament will be held in NYU's Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life, which is located at 238 Thompson Street, New York, NY 10012. Depending on the field size, some games may also be held in the adjacent Kimmel Center for Student Life. We'll aim to start registration at 8:30am and games at 9:00am, although you and I both know that's unlikely to happen.

We highly recommend you take some variety of public transportation to get here, as parking is sparse and expensive. We'll send detailed subway directions to registered teams closer to the tournament date, but if you have general questions about the best ways to get to the city, don't hesitate to ask us.

I need not say that food options for lunch and dinner are extremely plentiful here in Manhattan. If you want recommendations, ask anyone affiliated with NYU during the tournament.

FIELD (at least 5/12, updated Oct. 24)
Brown: 1 team
Colgate: 1 team
NYU: TBD based on how many other teams register
Rutgers: 3 teams
Yale: 1 team

We look foward to seeing everyone here in New York in a few weeks!

Congratulations to Rutgers A for winning this tournament, followed by a tie between our house team and Brown for second place. Stats are available here.

Thanks to Rahul for directing this tournament, to Rohan and Lev for doing statistics, and to Andrew, Harrison, Danny, Doug, and Rachel (and, uh, myself) for moderating and keeping score. We couldn't have done it without all of you. And of course, thanks to Rutgers, Brown, Yale, and Colgate for sending teams to our unusually late novice tournament.
