"Summer" Open 2019 (August 2019)

Post by Make sure your seatbelt is fastened » Wed Nov 28, 2018 12:13 am

We’re pleased to announce "Summer" Open 2019, a mid-November open tournament. The intended difficulty is somewhere approximately halfway between “regular difficulty” and Chicago Open, or very roughly on par with VCU Open 2015.

The set will be edited and written by Aseem Keyal, Jason Golfinos, Kenji Shimizu and myself, with contributions from several other writers. We’re still looking for more contributors (and potentially a separate editor) for the physics and other science, so if you’re interested, feel free to contact us!

The set will consist of 15 packets (plus tiebreakers) of powermarked tossups (capped at nine lines, TNR, after the powermark) and bonuses with the following distribution:

4/4 Literature
> 1/1 Long Fiction
> 1/1 Poetry
> 1/1 Drama & short fiction
> 1/1 Misc. (Criticism, nonfiction, mixed, or more of the above)

4/4 History
> 1/1 United States
> 1/1 Continental Europe
> 1/1 World
> 1/1 Commonwealth, Ancient, Historiography, misc.

4/4 Science
> 1/1 Biology
> 1/1 Chemistry
> 1/1 Physics
> 1/1 Other Science (40 percent Math, 20 percent Computer Science, Astronomy, Earth Science with some flexibility for other content such as various engineering topics that do not belong in the big three)

3/3 Fine Arts
> 1/1 Painting and Sculpture
> 1/1 Classical Music and Opera
> 1/1 Other Arts

3/3 RMP
> 1/1 Religion
> 1/1 Myths and Legends
> 1/1 Philosophy

1/1 Thought/Other Academic

1/1 Geo/CE/GK

We will be charging a mirror fee of $50 dollars per team, and are looking to secure accessible host sites in all the major regions. If you’re interested in mirroring this set, please email 13i9n01 at gmail dot com.

Very very hype for this

EDIT: I have been informed that the correct adjectival form is "hyped". Thanks Ophir!

I always like non-CO Open difficulty opens, so I'm looking forward to this.

We’ve decided to shift the date of “Summer” Open 2019 to mid-November in part due to an excellent suggestion from Jacob Reed. We believe this adjustment will allow us to avoid the downsides of a mid-August date (fatigue from/proximity to CO, coinciding with the start of the semester, etc.) while also enabling us to put together the best possible set for teams to play.

I would describe VCUO 2015 roughly as halfway between Regionals and Nationals difficulty (i.e. the classic conception of Regs+); Regionals to CO is much harder (roughly on par with Nationals difficulty). Which description will this tournament stick more closely to?
