Will The Unanswered Question be ready by this point?

Due to some event cancellations and the fact that some of these things might be mirrored earlier, I'm not sure if we need more events--I thought about doing a gimmicky revival of the guerrilla film tournament if we needed some a late Sunday event.

We are open to having any other sets that people want to play, we are looking to add a few more sets pending what attendees will have played already at the HS Nats and such.

If MIxtape isn't run earlier, this would seem to be an ideal place to run it, no? I know several people in the region are planning to write for it.

Yeah both of those are on Mike Cheyne's list (huge thanks for putting that together), which I've linked on the form. If you're interested in playing something and plan on attending, definitely include it in the "Tournaments you'd like to play" part of the form. Ultimately, I think we'll have a better idea after HSNCT of what side events would be mirrored here.

I didn't get to play META at HSNCT, so I wouldn't mind playing that here. MIXTAPE is being run at Purdue, but could also presumably be remixed here. I might also have some film packets ready by this time. Would like playing Unanswered Question if that's done by this point.

Depending on how many packets I get, I think Mixtape can be run in both locations on separate sets of packets if people are willing to donate for both events. The whole thing is for charity so the more opportunities to run it, the better.

Assuming MUSES is like a team, I'm willing to add nothing for teams. I know tragedy and comedy but only as they apply to the New York Mets.

Once they select the events, it would be cool if someone from Illinois could set up a doc with a spreadsheet for each event, so people could make themselves available for team forming, free agents, etc.

The OP has been updated with hyperlinks to team formation sheets. I'll make a meta-sheet with multiple tabs once we have further events (which we'll decide on adding post-PACE).

Not intentional, fell into the trap of making the link with my UIUC email (which is a closed Gsuite, so it's not public access). Should work now.

Edited my form response to make this clear as well, but I would greatly appreciate Super ACRONYM being held Sunday, since circumstances have made it such that I'm likely going to end up getting into Champaign on Saturday.

If the Purdue event folds, perhaps some of the events scheduled there could be run here, even as shootouts.

Seems one of the most voted for sets was Cambridge Open, so we will be bringing that back to be played on Saturday with MUSES. We will run Super Acronym and The Unanswered Question on Sunday, followed by whatever else we have time for. If there's enough interest, we can run some sets Friday evening as well.

I have updated the OP with a spreadsheet for CamO. I've been told Unanswered Question should be run as doubles so I've set it up as such for now.

I guess I can't argue with CamO getting the most votes, but I'd rather play more varied events than two full length tournaments on Saturday (and also try and get Unanswered Question played on Saturday, not late Sunday). Were people aware that MUSES is a full length tournament?

EDIT: I'm not sure how the poll was set up--I guess I'm questioning the need to play a full length tournament at all (i.e., of Oxford Open/CamO/NASAT).

If MUSES is full tossup/bonus I'd rather cut CamO for more zany side event action. All-subject tournaments are overrated.

I agree that I'd rather play a fun side event than a slog of an all-subject tournament, but would like to make sure that there's a sufficient supply of side events that will appeal and be clear to people.

Worry not, the order as of now --

Friday:
  • <nothing planned>
(we 100% can run stuff Friday evening)

Saturday:
  • CamO
  • Muses
Sunday:
  • Super Acronym
  • The Unanswered Question
It's likely we will have time for more on Sunday, possibly on Saturday, and certainly on Friday. I'll be reaching out to people to hold sets for potential mirroring with our extra time and update the OP with those. In the mean time, if you have any schedule suggestions my email is [email protected]

I should have a formal update out soon. For now, informally, the expected order is:
Saturday 7/20
  • Cambridge Open (morning)
  • MUSES (afternoon + evening)
Sunday 7/21
  • Super Acronym (morning)
  • The Unanswered Question (afternoon)
  • Other events (META, Imaginary Landscape, Soundbyte 64)
All events are within a range of $10-20 / person. I am open to suggestions with what to put on the Friday night slot for those that are interested in something being played then. The Illinois club plans on meeting today to finalize logistics, so those who've filled out the form, expect an email from me sometime later tonight (I'll also be updating the OP).

Seeing as this is side event weekend, I’d prefer to make Cambridge Open as short as possible in favor of hopefully getting another event in on Saturday.

Excuse me if I'm sounding like a broken record here, but I'm not a big fan of the schedule as it looks. Super ACRONYM is a hard tossup/bonus tournament, by shoving it into a morning slot you're either being unrealistic or making this stacked field play a truncated tournament. Cambridge Open being set to only Morning also seems to be stretching it, unless you were to run a shorter schedule (single round robin?!), which I would be totally fine with.

I'm a little biased here since I'll be stuck in a hotel lobby doing work Friday night, but I'd be very disappointed if something I really wanted to play got moved to Friday night in order to run a full all-subject tournament nobody is particularly excited to play again on Saturday.

Yeah, I concur with my fellow dufusii: if I recall last year, the first thing the field immediately demanded was to play less rounds of Cambridge Open. I guess I can accept that perhaps there's a silent majority of CamO fans and they won the poll, but I really feel like the second side event on Sunday is going to get the shaft hard.

I'm okay with a short CamO schedule and then an attempt to get MUSES and Unanswered Question in on Saturday. I realize this is hard, especially seeing as MUSES has (some) bonuses, but I certainly don't want to shorten Super ACRONYM.

META seems like a good fit for Friday night, given that many people coming to this will have played it before. I would prefer if CamO was drastically reduced in size (ie, two parallel brackets + 1 crossover) rather than eliminated entirely.

Last year, we did 8 rounds of Cambridge Open plus finals, and I thought that was just right length-wise. If the crowd really wants to reduce it to make room for more events, I would advise running CamO as a tossup-only event. I'd rather play 10-12 rounds of tossups than 5-6 rounds of tossup/bonus (side events really don't need bonuses, it just makes the event take up too much time). Also agreeing with META as the clear friday night event (if people want one), as a lot of the people who are travelling from Chicago on Friday night have already played the tournament.

Mike E. asked me to post this here for community feedback.

The schedule we currently have on the drawing board is as follows:

Friday:
META + potentially other smaller events (looking for input on what events to play and in what order based on arrival times and preferences)

Saturday:
CamO in 8 rounds plus final. We are considering running this on the clock, ICT style
MUSES in 10-11 rounds plus final
Unanswered Question in 6-7 rounds plus final. We are looking to order food in order to fit this in after MUSES so as to avoid lengthy dinner breaks

Sunday:
Super ACRONYM in as many rounds as the field can support
Any remaining events that people want to play

Any input/feedback on this new schedule outlined is welcomed

I like this schedule, although I’d rather not play on the clock. Relatedly, will someone be excising the excessively British tossups like last year? That would help cut it down a bit instead of having a clock.

Yeah, the clock can be cool for Serious National Championships but I don't think it'd be fun to play a whimsical British set on the clock.

I think this schedule is better, but for reference's sake, last year we played CamO and then two tossup-only events and still finished pretty late. (I forget how long CamO took, though)

Illinois Admin wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2019 10:16 pm Mike E. asked me to post this here for community feedback.

In my personal opinion, Unanswered Question might not be the ideal set to play after a 20-round day of quizbowl, since it's a pretty hard, almost-full-length set. I don't know if anyone else has thoughts about this, but the Saturday schedule just strikes me as pretty seriously packed.

As long as we don't abridge Super Acronym, I'm good to do Unanswered Question on Sunday night, as I am not leaving until Monday. I don't know what others' travel plans are. I agree with Halle that that seems like an overly punishing Saturday.

It seems there's general agreement that the schedule reflected in the OP is fine then (unanswered question on Sunday). I acknowledge that the consensus is no one wants Super Acronym cut short (we have no plans to do so). We do plan to keep the CamO mirror similar to last year (8 to 9 rounds, with tossups and bonuses, British-lite). As of now, for those playing Unanswered Question, my suggestion would be to get food during the finals or order food, so we can start swiftly after Super Acronym.

Last year, things went pretty well and we managed to get through a lot of quiz bowl. As last year, I'd like to emphasize that we'll have fun, but we should try our best to keep things moving. If you have any schedule feedback, you can either post it here for public feedback / discussion, or privately send me an email.

Friday form. With all the extra events, we will be starting festivities on Friday 7/19 around 5pm and will go as late as people wish. We will be starting at 8:45 am on Saturday / Sunday, so please try to arrive to David Kinley Hall between 8:15 and 8:30.

I'd also like to emphasize that there's been a location change and we will be in David Kinley Hall.

John Ketzkorn wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2019 11:01 am I should have a formal update out soon. For now, informally, the expected order is:
Saturday 7/20
  • Cambridge Open (morning)
  • MUSES (afternoon + evening)
Sunday 7/21
  • Super Acronym (morning)
  • The Unanswered Question (afternoon)
  • Other events (META, Imaginary Landscape, Soundbyte 64)
Looking at this schedule and the response it got, and then comparing it to the new proposed schedule, perhaps something like this could work:

Saturday:
CamO, morning/early afternoon
MUSES, afternoon/evening
assorted events and shootouts, late evening

Sunday:
SACRONYM, morning/early afternoon
UAQ, late afternoon/early evening

This seems like it would allow you to run Super ACRONYM without restricting its length—it’s a full tournament, but it isn’t a literally takes up the entire day tournament, at least in my memory of playing the last iteration. And it seems more reasonable to play low-key shootouts late at night than to attempt to run an official event, especially a challenging one like UAQ that I fear could turn into a punishing slog if everyone is already super tired while playing. On the other hand, I would be very interested to hear if anyone planning on playing UAQ is not going to be staying for Sunday afternoon, because if the field would be significantly weaker in that time slot keeping it on Saturday would be best. Anyway, this is just my two cents.

Edit: Mike posted while I was drafting this and I pretty much just agree with what he said.

I have the BUMPY II packets (and, I suppose, Look At This Photograph) if people wish to play these visual tournaments in a relatively informal setting at some point (probably Friday or late Sunday for those still in the area).
