ANNOUNCEMENT: HIPPIE at Hampshire College 3/7/09

Post by BuzzerZen »

Hampshire Invites Players to Participate In an Event called HIPPIE on March 7th, 2008. It will be a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament, a submission-optional tournament produced by the UMN team. Registration is now open. Only email registrations sent to me at [email protected] will be accounted as "real"; posting in this thread is fine, but I want an email from you. The field cap currently stands at eight. If I am promised moderators, the field cap will be increased.

Packet-writing

Packets are optional at all sites. Anyone submitting a packet by February 14 will get $30 off. Anyone submitting a packet by February 28 will get $10 off. Half-packets are also acceptable; simply halve the discounts from before to get your discount. The Minnesota team will be writing the rest of the packets.

Costs and discounts

Base fee: $120
Buzzer: -$5
Moderator: -$15
Moderator I know is excellent: -$25
Travel: -$10 if over 200 miles by Google maps

Make checks payable to Evan Silberman.

The "excellent moderator" discount will be awarded at my discretion; if you want to register an excellent moderator, let me know in advance who you're bringing along.

For reference, Hampshire College is in western Massachusetts, less than a 2 hour drive from the Boston area, about 2 hours from Providence, about 2 hours from Dartmouth, and probably about 2 hours from most other places in New England.

I'll provisionally say that I will come help read at this and I'm sure I'll be able to round up a Brown team.

You cannot get to Amherst via the MBTA commuter rail, not by a long shot. Your only real mass transit options are the wildly overpriced Peter Pan bus or Amtrak, and both of those options would likely require you to depart Friday and spend the night in Amherst. If you do want to do that, it might be possible to house people at Hampshire in lounges/living rooms Friday night.

I have secured room reservations for March 7th. We will have eight classrooms and one lecture hall, so the maximum field size we will be able to stretch to is 18.

Hey,

I would encourage teams attending this mirror to consider submitting packets (or half packets) for this event. I know that there are several teams who might be interested in attending this mirror and who write questions we look forward to working on. Plus, there are discounts available for writing packets!

Thanks,

Hey hey it's a field update! Of sorts.

FIELD (4):
Eric 'n Linna Superteam
Amherst
Quizbowl in the Gardens of Spain (Watkins and Hannah)
Hypothetical Hampshire House Team

Sign up, you quiz bowl team sorts of individuals.

Also, any Boston-area teams hoping to travel by mass transportation should look into the Peter Pan bus from South Station to Amherst. You'll have to spend at least Friday night in Amherst or surrounding municipalities if you come by bus. I may be able to arrange for some folks to spend a night or two on campus. Be in touch!

No other Brandeis players seem interested (yet?), but if I come to this as a freelancer, might anyone need an extra player?

I'm somewhat interested in attending this, depending on my ability to spend the night on the floor of some friends of friends ...

But yeah, if anyone could use a scab player on their team please shoot me an email at stevengfeldman at gmail, and I'll try to work something out ...

Hey, so I'm increasingly dubious as to whether I can actually come to this; in fact, in the absence of a compelling need for my presence as a driver or moderator, I would actually prefer to stay home.

You are not compellingly needed, though you would still be greatly appreciated and fed lunch if you did come.

Also, yes, as of this moment, I'm still planning on this happening. I'll post an update later this evening after my exam.

So did Hampshire really leave early so they could get back to the campus they were already on?

Yeah, apparently one of the two players on the house team overslept his nap, and the other went to find him and didn't return. I'm willing to surmise that it wasn't a grand scheme and rather the second player couldn't find him and didn't want to bother coming back to play solo again. Which still blows, but from what little I know of those players they're not bad dudes. (Not that this shouldn't become a class example of Douglass's law, granted.)

But on the whole, Hampshire did a good job running the tournament and the players on their house team are only going to get better (and better still the more rounds they play, but the time for snark is over).
