ACE Camp
I'm not completely sure that this is the correct place for this, but here it goes anyway.
Does anyone have any idea for the dates for the camp this year? Maybe just a general idea, besides "in the summer" of course?
Also, how is registration for the camp itself done?
Thanks in advance.

I was wondering the same thing myself. I have last year's Mt. St. Mary's, which will no longer be a site, as July 24. I hope the date for whichever one I attend ends up being similar; my family is trying to schedule our first vacation in a long time around this.

Does anybody know what courses will be taught this year?
I'm looking forward to going to Milligan this summer!
Believe it or not we might actually have around 10 campers this year, instead of our traditional 2.

Yeah, it's quite a shame that they couldn't have one back East this year. I still can't understand why the demand wasn't there for one in the Mid-Atlantic region, but three of them within a couple hundred miles of each other is fine.ImaPC wrote:I really wish I could, but the distance might be too much, but we will see...I think I'll be attending Milligan.

Yeah, It's a pity they didn't bring the MSM one back. Then again, if you're involved enough to do this sort of thing and you live in the DC area, it's probably easier to attend/organize open practices.

I can assure you that no one was more disappointed that things didn't work out for us in Maryland than we were. With such an active circuit in that part of the country, we expected that camp to grow into one of our most popular, but that simply didn't happen. I expect that at some point we will give the Mid-Atlantic another shot, but not this year.

Re: ACE Camp
We have been hesitant to post our course list on our website until we finalize everything with our teaching staff, but I can announce that we will definitely be offering the following:
Literature I *
Literature I Lab **
History I
History I Lab
Science I
Science I Lab
Fine Arts I
Fine Arts II
World History
British History/Monarchs
American Military History
Modern History
Scientists and Their Work
Physics
Chemistry
Astronomy
Math
Social Sciences
Philosophy
Mythology
Ancient Literature
Shakespeare
British Literature Pre-Shakespeare
* The Introductory courses are designed for players new to quizbowl (or at least new to the "canon" in that particular subject)
** The Lab courses are designed to complement the introductory courses by offering extra instruction and buzzer practice specific to that subject. You must be in the accompanying Introductory course in order to register for the lab.
Depending on staff availability/registration numbers, some classes may not be offered at all three camps. It's also quite possible that (depending on registration numbers) we will be adding classes. A full announcement will be made on our website once we have finalized everything.
Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you this summer at ACE Camps!

We're excited about the courses that we are offering this summer, and we are looking forward to a great summer of camps. Registrations are coming in at a faster rate than at any time in our 16 year history, but we still have plenty of space at all three locations. If you're interested in a great week of quizbowl over the summer, we'd love to have you.

I will be attending SEMO along with everyone else from Auburn. We're sending anywhere from 6-8 kids, as far as I know.
Now what exactly does the course "Brit Lit: Pre-Shakespeare" consist of? Looking through my book of major writers, I see only four major writers whose mainly worked before Shakespeare: Chaucer, Spenser, Sidney, and Marlowe. While this book is far from complete and somewhat ignorant of several important writers, the given course name seems to include only a very limited scope of literature.

I have no idea if this is still what's going on, but I once took a course with a similar title taught by Mr. Allen that was a survey of western literature up to Shakespeare (including ancient stuff, etc.), so perhaps it's simply a slightly misleading title. In any event, if Allen is teaching this course, it's worth taking - he really knows his stuff. Now what exactly does the course "Brit Lit: Pre-Shakespeare" consist of?

Re: ACE Camp
I am teaching the Brit Lit course. Mr. Allen from NKC is teaching the Ancient Lit course, which includes Greek, Roman, Indian, and Mesopotamian literature I believe. There is very little, if any, overlap with my courses.
Basically, British Literature at ACE is divided into 3 groups:
1. Pre-Shakespeare - this includes St. Bede, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Beowulf and other Old English stuff from quiz bowl, Chaucer and other Middle English stuff from quiz bowl, and Shakespeare's earliest contemporaries like Marlowe, Spenser, and Kyd (this course is offered at all 3 camps)
2. Shakespeare - the name says it all (this course is offered at all 3 camps)
3. Post-Shakespeare - starts at the Jacobeans and moves all the way through post-modernism (this course is not offered this summer)
I am also teaching the Modern World Lit course which will focus on non-English, non-American authors from 1900 to present (this course will be offered at all 3 camps).
Hope that clears some things up.

Not that I know of. In fact, with the elimination of the Mt. St. Mary's camp, there isn't really a good location for the east coast, either. I think the camp is designed mainly for players in the South, location-wise.

The Mt. St. Mary's camp was eliminated because the attendance, IIRC, fell way short of the other camps and was thus much less sustainable.

Re: ACE Camp
Actually, ACE would love to do a camp on the West Coast at some point in the future, should there be sufficient interest. We are always interested in exploring new sites convenient for interested quiz bowlers.
As for the Mt. St. Mary's camp held in July of 2007 and 2008, that location went from 47 campers in year 1 to 39 campers in year 2. Clearly, this was not the number of players we were hoping for in such an active area for quiz bowl.
In contrast, at our new camp location this summer, we have just under 60 kids attending. This number of campers in year 1 is much closer to what we are looking for in terms of sustainability. Hopefully, this site will continue to grow as our other 2 sites have done over the past several years.
In regard to regional diversity, ACE has just under 300 campers this summer that come from over 20 states, including Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Maryland, and Virginia just to name a few.
