ARMY NAVY @ Richard Montgomery HS (Yale Mirror) 4/9/11

Postby Transparent Pudding » Sun Jan 16, 2011 5:59 pm

Richard Montgomery High School is ridiculously pleased to announce its tournament entitled "At Richard Montgomery: Yale's Non-Athletic Voyage Yonder," ARMY NAVY for short. It will be held on April 9, 2011 at our campus in bucolic Rockville, Maryland. We will be using questions written by the Yale Academic team for their BHSAT XX tournament.
Registration will begin at 8:15, with the opening meeting at about 9:00 AM. The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70
Buzzer discount: -$10
Reader discount: -$10
Each additional team from a school: -$5
Minimum fee per team: $40
Checks should be made out to "Richard Montgomery High School" with "It's Academic" in the memo line.
Delicious (and not-so-delicious) lunch opportunities abound in the area surrounding RM.
Please send registrations to rmquizbowl@gmail.com; A post on this forum does not a registration make.
We can't wait to see you on April 9!

FIELD (10):
Caesar Rodney (1)
GDS (1)
Whitman (2)
Mont. Blair (2)
TJ (2)
Chris Manners (1)
RM (1 house team)

If anyone has any issues with this being so late in the year, we're open to jumping into the weekend just vacated by TJ (4/9) moving their tournament to 3/20 if that works better for people.

I only have issues with the date if it prevents us from going to UMCP for their probable Spring Tournament, which is often held on or around this date.

Good point. If Chris/whoever expresses interest in this date, I'll just move it back. I'll talk to the UMD people next week @ TIT.

This quite possibly will be moved to April 9, I'll have a certain answer by week's end.

Chattahoochee is expressing interest in this date only: 1 team and 2 buzzers. We cannot do the May date at all. Looking forward to your decision.

If this gets moved to April 9, I can volunteer moderate and bring, oh, something like 12 buzzer sets and 36 clocks if you want to do timed rounds.

Anyway, we'll consider on April 9th, but that's the week before our tournament and it may be crunch time for us to get organized. I think we'll be okay so mark us interested.

OK what would people think about April 23? It's Easter Saturday (which my sources within the religion of Christianity tell me is not really a thing) and Spring Break for some people, does this cause problems with anyone?

I was referring to the sanctity of the Saturday, not the Sunday (which obviously is a thing) , but seeing as you would have to travel on that Sunday I understand that you would not be able to come.

Yeeesch... schedule-wise, 4/9 is not the best weekend for us; I'll be out of state. However, if I can coerce— er, persuade— another teacher into chaperoning, Robinson will bring 1 (or maybe 2) team(s).

What is the minimum amount of teams attending this tournament that you will accept for it to actually run?

Raynell, I just replied to your coach's e-mail, but I'll reply here, too, in case that's more efficient.

I currently stand at one student committed and one who seems to be a maybe leaning toward not available. If I can get two, I'll gladly enter a two-person team, but as of an hour ago, the second student thought she may have another obligation.

I hope this helps rather than hinders any decisions you may make.

Okay, so 10 teams haven't signed up yet (your self-imposed benchmark) but a tournament surely can be run with 8 teams.

Can we confirm that this is officially happening now? I'd like to have word of such, for certain, by this afternoon.

If it makes a difference, Whitman can bring another team.

That would be fantastic. With the addition of Whitman B and a house team, this tournament is go. We'll just do a full round robin with placement games if necessary. Registrations are still open though, so if you want to register, just let me know!

Received final confirmation that we cannot do this. Sorry, Raynell. Hopefully, you still can pull this off.

Chris Manners won this tournament, with Whitman coming is second, followed by GDS (who had three of their best players come late after their It's Academic taping) and Caesar Rodney. Stats will be posted soon.

Let me know of any errors, there are probably at least a few. Note that the RM House team was treated as an exhibition team.

This was a fun day. Thanks to RM for running this with just 9 teams and a house one.

The questions were real good. For the second year in a row, possibly my favorite non-vendor-produced set of the year was edited heavily or at least in part by Matt Jackson. The bonus questions were especially excellent and while there were multiple very challenging "hard" answers (a couple of which i'm not sure if i've ever seen before; nonetheless they were "important things"), a large majority of them were 10-able by practically any oxygen-breathing quizbowl team in the country. That is an awesome thing that most other sets lack, unfortunately. Some tossups had a couple weird ideas for answers or were just a little too hard, but that happens occasionally and they were not that common. Great job overall, Yale and Matt. If you weren't lucky enough to play on this set this year, please access it when/if it is released online for excellent practice material.

Hopefully we'll see a few teams that went here at our tournament on May 14th. If not, we'll see you at UMCP on May 21st.
