Early Autumn Collegiate Novice at UMD (10/1/11)

Postby Gonzagapuma1 » Thu Aug 25, 2011 1:42 am

The Maryland Academic Quiz Team will be hosting a mirror of the second Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament on October 1st, 2011 at the University of Maryland.

The tournament is designed as an introduction to collegiate pyramidal quizbowl; as such, there are some eligibility restrictions to ensure a level playing field.

1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.

2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.

3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.

4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:

i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.

ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.

iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.

iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.

5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

If you have questions regarding eligibility, email me.

Cost:

Base Fee Per Player: $15

Working Buzzer Discount: -$5

Moderator Discount: -$10 (This discount will not be available when we get enough moderators, so register quickly!)

Registration will begin at 8:30 and Round 1 will begin as close to 9:00 as possible. The actual schedule of games will be determined once our field size is set. All teams are guaranteed a minimum of 8 games, and I anticipate everyone will be able to play 10 games.

To register, please e-mail me at danjpuma@gmail.com with the subject line Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament and include the number of teams, buzzers and moderators you will be bringing. We may cap the field if it reaches 36 teams, so register early! This should be a great event for inexperienced players, so come on out!

This tournament will probably be in Jimenez Hall, but I will firm that up as we get closer to the date of the tournament.

Field:
UVA (2)
VCU
Penn (2-3)
Delaware
Penn State
Maryland House 2+
Johns Hopkins
UC
Princeton (2)

Okay, it's looking like we will be here, but apparently October 1st corresponds to the first canning weekend for THON (and one of our two drivers is heavily involved with THON), so unless there's a canning location *near* UMD, we'll only have one team. But we'll be there!

I'll try to get some GW people to go to this. It's on my birthday, but I may coach/read anyway, at least for a little bit.

Since I know teams are often unsure how their novice attendance will materialize, I'd like to invite people to register, let us know you're coming, and give us a very rough projection of how many teams you'll have. We want to make sure we're amply staffed, and avoid any last-minute registration rushes.

Was there some sort of GW registration besides my post? My post was by no means a registration.

VCU will likely be bringing a team, a moderator and our usual numerous buzzer systems. I'll shoot you an e-mail as soon as I confirm for sure (by Monday for sure).

If everyone could firm up the number of teams they're bringing within the next day or so, that would be great. Also, I don't have Penn State or Penn's e-mail addresses, so if someone from those teams could e-mail me that would be great.

Has the location of this tournament been finalized? And where do you suggest we park?

GW should probably be taken off the registration list, considering GW never registered.

Just sent an e-mail that should address those questions. Also, Penn and Penn St., if you guys could give me your e-mails so I could forward it to you that would be awesome.

So we were relying on a taxi service to take us into campus, and they flaked so Penn State is likely going to be late. How late is going to be up to the cab company, I suppose.

In case anyone cares, UVA A beat UMD A in an advantaged final to go undefeated on the day. I believe that Delaware finished third and Penn A finished fourth.

Minor error, but it looks like the final game on a half-packet was counted as a full game. Could you fix that, for posterity?
