BARGE Mirror at Bellarmine (David Hu Memorial)

Postby List of Fighting Spirit characters » Thu Dec 29, 2011 2:49 am

Salutations to all,

On behalf of Berkeley and Bellarmine, I am pleased to announce a mirror of Chris Ray's BARGE set to be held at Bellarmine's campus on January 21. We are anticipating that the tournament will run from 9:30 to 5 at O'Donnell Hall, with registration starting at 8:30 (this is subject to change based on projected interest from different teams). We also would really like staffers if you can afford to spare them. Right now, we are not setting a field cap and will not do so unless we see fit for it. For now, there will be one double round robin prelims bracket using ACF procedures to determine the winner, with further playoff rounds as necessary. Because of the late announcement of this mirror, there is no packet submission requirement.

Pricing:
$110 base
-$5 for each trained moderator
-$10 for arriving from more than 250 miles
-$5 per functional buzzer
-$20 for second team, -$5 each per team for each team after that

Confirmed:
Bellarmine (probably 1)
Berkeley (2)
Mike et al
Jeff et al
Stanford (2)

Expressed interest:
UCI

Anyone wanting to register should email cfleitas@bcp.org. If you get bounced back or hear an auto-reply from that email, then reach either myself (Ankit Aggarwal) at ankit.aggarwal12@bcp.org or Nikhil Desai at nadesai.bcp@gmail.com. Or, you know, just tell Jeff Hoppes.

Announcement on the database at http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/816/.

It's likely I'll have an open team to play this.

Edit: I just booked my ticket, so I'll definitely be coming.

So would this team be independent of any teams officially entered from Berkeley, which is to my understanding being arranged by Tanay? Also, Jeff, since you'll be helping to host the event, you can also take registrations. If you could get any former quizbowlers who now live in the Bay Area to staff, that would be greatly appreciated. Since Bellarmine A is playing this, we only have Fleitas, Romano, you, and Escobar's Jonathan Lam so far registered.

EDIT: I might have assumed you were helping to run the tournament since Tanay told me it would be hosted by both Berkeley and Bellarmine. If this was in error, please inform me.

1) Yes, distinct from the Berkeley teams

2) I'm happy to help with registration, stats, whatever, but since this is an open I was also planning to play (which means that I can't be on the moderating list).

I'll jump in for this tourney as a free agent either on Bentley's team or some other free agent team.

By the way, is it possible to get a ride for at least 2 people from the Days Inn Hotel at San Jose airport to Bellarmine on the morning of the tournament? There don't look to be good public transportation options.

UCSD dropped out because they're hosting a high school tournament on the same day. Dwight can't come but he said he would ask his team. Other than that, I wouldn't know.

We have changed the building of this tournament from O'Donnell to the first floor of Lokey. Make sure to park in the lots and not in the street, and Lokey is the building with the glass facade the farthest away from the Hedding Street parking lots. We are planning currently to start this tournament at 9:30. We have locked in the schedule for 7 teams (our schedule accommodates 8 with sufficient staffers), so this will be our arrangement with our packet limitations (13):
-A 7 packet round robin prelim where each team plays each of the other 6 and has a bye round to presumably assist with staffing.
-After lunch, the teams are split into an upper (4 teams) and lower (3 teams) bracket based on prelim records. The lower bracket team not playing in a given round will have a bye, and each team again will have a game against each of the other teams in its bracket.
-We will then have a cleared field, a final, or an advantaged final as necessary. Scoring and neg prizes will then be given.
Anticipate the tournament being done some time around 5 or 6.

I'd personally prefer more than just 8 guaranteed games for the lower bracket teams. Can you shift around the house teams to avoid a bye?

Putting 2 house teams would deprive us of necessary staffers, and we have no other tournament model that would let us have sufficient rounds, avoid staffing shortages, and fit within the necessary number of packets. However, we would be glad to add a second round robin to the lower bracket if packets are available and/or these teams are willing to miss watching the final round.

How are you guys on buzzers? I can bring one if I have to but I'd prefer not to.

Another note of advice for anyone attending this: the 8th graders are taking the entrance exam on the same day, which means you'll have to be very careful about not potentially disrupting any of the testing. Walk directly to Lokey, which is the building directly adjacent to the large construction area.

I dunno if it has anything to do with this being a college tournament (I would guess not?), but I think it's fairly incredible that Sameer Rai of Bellarmine, a sophomore (I believe), was outscoring Nikhil through three rounds (when, you know, Nikhil is easily one of the best players in the country). He understandably finished behind Nikhil, but not by a whole lot. I think that's really impressive.

EDIT: I say all of this in terms of the current high school game.
