Post by Pilgrim »

This is the official global announcement for ACF Regionals 2012, which will take place on February 18, 2012.

Editors
Head Editor: Trevor Davis (Carnegie Mellon)
Co-Editors: Will Butler (Georgia Tech), Auroni Gupta (UCSD), John Lawrence (Yale), Guy Tabachnick (Brown)

Mid-Atlantic: George Washington University

Packet Submission
Every team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2010 is required to submit a packet in order to play in Regionals. Please note that this requirement now also applies to eligible high school teams. Further information can be found at the ACF Packet Submission Guidelines.

The submission schedule for this tournament is:
December 26, 2011: -$50 (You get an extra day for Christmas, what a deal!)
January 8, 2012: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
January 22, 2012: no penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
January 29, 2012: +$25
February 5, 2012: +$50

Please submit your packet to [email protected] and include "ACF Regionals packet" and the name of your school in the subject line. In order to meet any particular deadline, your packet must be in my inbox by 11:59 pm PST on the stated day.

Extensions may be granted after the final February 5 deadline at a cost of $10 per day, but such extensions are not guaranteed. If you want an extension, contact me before the February 5 deadline.

Packet Penalties
Be sure to fully read the information contained in the Packet Guidelines. Any cases of incorrect formatting, plagiarism, or prohibited question types will result in hefty fees. The editors also reserve the right to send back any egregious cases to be fixed by the team in question, so be sure to do it right the first time.

If you have any questions about ACF Regionals or this announcement, you can email me at [email protected] or post your question in this thread.

With three weeks to go till the first submission deadline, I just wanted to check two things:

1. Is there an editing team for this tournament?
2. Is active work being done to secure mirror sites? Last year, this was not started until close to the date, and as a consequence there were scheduling problems for the Northeast mirror that nearly stopped it from running, and contributed to it being a six-team tournament. I really don't want that to happen again this year.

Thanks.

1. I'm afraid to say this hasn't been decided yet. I will endeavor to get a team put together and announced within the week.
2. I have no plans to actively pursue hosts until after the bid deadline (December 17) because this is a hassle and teams within a region generally have a better idea about who should host than the central editor (though I do realize this is harder to do when the editing team is still unknown). I can tell you that I have received several bids, but none yet from the Northeast region.

So, a bunch of high schools and middle schools have signed up for this, which is purportedly using the ACF Regionals set on one of its days. How exactly will this site work? Will teams be expected to submit packets? Will there be separate college-only sites held simultaneously in Texas at this time?

EDIT: After reading this more closely, it looks like this will just be a standard Regionals site and will serve as the site for Texas/the South Plains area. Please ignore this post.

ACF Regionals 2012 will be hosted at the following sites:

West: UC San Diego
South: Chris Romero at St John's School, Houston
North: University of Minnesota
Midwest: University of Illinois
Southeast: Georgia Tech
East Canada/Niagara: University of Buffalo
Mid-Atlantic: George Washington University
Northeast: Brown University

We are not actively pursuing any additional sites, but if you believe your school can fill a demand not met by the above hosts and wish to submit a bid, we will still consider it.

The first deadline has passed. I inserted a list of received packets into the first post - if you believe you sent me a packet but you are not listed there, please contact me ASAP.

Trevor,

Buffalo is hosting this year, per the ACF Hosting guidelines our packet should be a -$50, not a $0

That's correct; I had it marked on my spreadsheet, but forgot to transfer it over here. Thanks for reminding me.

This is your reminder that tomorrow is the final packet deadline for this tournament. Any team required to write questions who does not send me a packet or request an extension by 11:59pm PST will not be playing.

First post has been updated with all packets received so far and a list of teams to whom extensions have been granted. Please let me know if I missed someone - inductive reasoning indicates that this is probably the case.
